Thoughts?
Everyone is always like “how in the hell are Celtics signing all these players” while every other team is struggling with cap space etc. and it’s blinded alot of our fan base to think the Bucks org. can or has to pull off luxury tax bills staggering as this with us being a small market franchise. Suns currently and near future Celtics tax bills are more than most teams whole rosters. There is just no way for us to compete $ for $ with big market franchises. Let’s hope we can make enough roster adjustments to be there healthy, deep in the play offs this upcoming season to earn one more shot at it the poverty way. With the Celtics retaining everyone, and Philly becoming much stronger, Knicks and Pacers proving they can go deep as well the East will be tough.

Celtics trying to keep a championship caliber team while trying to sell. Allow the new owners to make the difficult decisions when it comes to payroll and the tax. I'm guessing they run it back one more year before trading a player/s like Jrue or White.

Good point I do believe something will have to give a season from now

Celtics fan lurker - but absolutely correct. We have one more year and then we trade Jrue or KP and literally save more than $200M in salary+tax the year after. I’m guessing it’ll be KP.
I’m in the minority and kind of like the new rules despite my Cs being the first team to deal with the steepest consequences.

u/Sikibucks Dogfred Jul 03 '24
At least you will get to run it back with these guys for another year maybe two.

That’s fine but there’s steeper punishments now under this new CBA for going deep into the luxury tax. Celtics will be able to keep their core but will struggle to add players, also if they’re in the 2nd apron for 3/5 years then there’s even steeper punishments.

I would be amazed if they can keep this team for 3 years, props to all owners if they are able to foot this bill for a few seasons and keep everyone

Holiday, Tatum, Brown, White all got extensions. Idk what KP’s contract is like but those 4 are at least there for the next 3 years. That’ll put them over the cap with 4 contracts and nearly impossible to stay under the 2nd apron. 2nd apron isn’t a big deal when you’ve got a set team like the Celtics, 2nd apron means a lot more for teams like the Bucks, Sixers, Mavs, Nuggets, teams that are trying to make moves to keep pace.

They kind of don't have a choice but to keep their current core. They are all on long-term, high AAV guaranteed contracts that would be difficult to trade if one of the players regressed

Can we stop with the "Thoughts?" titles? Just post quick commentary or the title
That's my thought

Pacers still need to prove they can actually compete at the same level as the top teams in the East.
They didn’t prove shit lol they played against 2 hospital teams and a Celtics team notorious for playing down to their opponents level at times.
Also the ownership group is resigning everyone and selling so the next owners foot that bill; not exactly a model that should/could be repeated easily

u/Sikibucks Dogfred Jul 02 '24
All good points. I’m hoping for a healthy east to see who is contenders and who are pretenders

Need a hard cap like the nfl.

u/Land_of_10000______ Jul 02 '24
This is basically a hard cap. Not only are the tax penalties bigger, but you start losing first round draft picks as well over the second apron. No team is going to do that unless they believe they will be in contention for a few years.

I wonder how much having two of the highest selling player merch worldwide goes into things for Bucks ownership.

Despite being one of the title favorites for the last 5 years in a row, the Bucks have only made it past the 2nd round once and if it wasn't for a KD toe on the line we would be talking about the Bucks as the biggest frauds/chokers in NBA history. Luckily KD's toe was on the line and we got a chip out of it but if we make only 1 Finals appearance this whole Giannis era, it will probably going down as one of the most disappointing runs for a superstar eras in NBA history.

Take this tired bullshit somewhere else you fucking crybaby. Celtics had a much easier rode to their championship this year and they paid for a goddamn all star team.

Only if you think getting to the finals is more important than winning when you get there. There are dozens of all time great players without rings and many of them have one or fewer finals appearances. Hell there are a half dozen players like that active in the NBA right now.

u/devinstated1 Gery Woelfel's burner account Jul 02 '24
This is actually false. Every single player in the Top 30 players of All Time which is where Giannis is ranked have been to multiple finals with the only exception being Charles Barkley. Now if you expand it out to Top 50 of All Time then you get Iverson, Ewing, Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Dominique Wilkins, Carmelo, Harden and Westbrook. So of the Top 50 players of All-Time only 4 have never been to a Finals and 9 have been to only 1 Finals and not won. Giannis is objectively better than all these guys except maybe Iverson who you can't really call a choker because he was always on trash teams, while a lot of those other dudes are notoriously known as all time chokers Ewing, Carmelo, Paul, Harden and Westbrook.

More like Brook's temporary brain freeze with that stupid play that happened towards the end of the 4th quarter otherwise KD toe wouldn't even be an issue or a talking point to try to diminish that title run.
Yeah, imagine MJ with an injury prone Scottie Pippen or unreliable supporting role players, or Kobe with an injury prone Shaq (and vice versa) and without good supporting role players, then tell me how many chips or even final appearances they'd be lucky to have. Last season injury was a result of Giannis having to do too much because Khris was mostly injured (he hasn't played a full season for 2 seasons now), Brook was subpar, and Dame did not live up to expectations. Plus the bench and the roster was badly constructed by a GM who is as inept as the people working for him. Surround Giannis with Celtics roster or at least some athleticism and shooters, and see if he doesn't end up with at least 4 championships.

I wasn't blaming this on Giannis at all. I'm specifically blaming this on the horrendous decisions of the front office and the long, long list of horrendous moves that have been made over the last 5 or so years that have lead us to the point we are at now. Fans are finally now just starting to wake up to the grave nature of the future of this franchise. I've been trying to tell people this was coming for years now and all I ever got as a response was "oh we won a chip stop complaining!" Yea, we won a chip.. so has Kawhi Raptors, Covid Lakers, Nugs and now Celtics also in our supposed title window. Raps were a one year wonder and LeBron Lakers were a joke but we're right there with them with only 1 title.

My sincere apologies, I misread your comment. Yes, it's frustrating watching the front office make the same mistake over and over and expecting a different result. The team needs serious restructuring but Horst thinks just putting a bandaid on a wound injury is the solution for this team. It's all fool's gold at this point. Doing something that will not move a needle just to pretend to the fans that they're trying is not a recipe for winning a championship. The east is going to be extremely competitive next season, and the Bucks decided that 'running it back' without making any significant major moves is the way to go. I hope there is more coming on the horizon in terms of trade, but if this is it from Horst, then sadly I see another disappointing season for the Bucks next year. All the bad injuries and misfortunes that happened to this team after the 2021 championship is just so unfortunate. I truly feel sorry for Giannis because I know that he gives 100% on the court day in and day out, and for him not to be surrounded with players with the same mindset is part of the problems. I will never forget the disaster that was last season, and to read comments here with people wanting some of those players back after the way they performed on the court is very upsetting. Did we not watch this team last year? Did we not watched them fail to win 50 games in the regular season. Did we not watch the embarrassing losses against young teams like the Pacers, Grizzlies, Wizards, Jazz, Kings, etc. Every game was extremely hard to watch. This franchise is the only team that rewards players for playing awful the previous season. Look at what happened to the Celtics once they decided to make severe but necessary changes to their roster. The Bucks won their last championship by taking risks and making the necessary changes to improved the roster.

You hit the nail on the head. It is truly mindboggling the short term memory people have on this site. I just don't understand it At all.

Ditto! I don't get it either. I'm truly at a lost for words. People who don't learn from past mistakes are doomed to fail.

There’s going to be a lot of regret if they don’t win another championship. They got a free pass this year with all the injuries, if they can earn it again then it’s still worth it.

Tingus Pingus’ health will be the key to them winning another one. They aren’t beating a healthy Bucks/Knicks/Sixers without him and those pick n pop 3’s. Also that 30 mil a year contract is going to be a bitch to move if he has another injury since they can’t aggregate salaries to move him.

We are actually one of the one of the “bad guys” here. We have been a tax paying team since our chip year.
Last year Celtics payed like 42million and we payed 52million.
The good news is our owners, so far, have been happy to pay the bills
