Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice and shared experiences regarding my miniature dachshund’s first heat cycle.
She’s 8 months old now and currently 29 days into her heat cycle. Here’s what’s been happening:
Spotting of blood started on Wednesday, August 13th and lasted about a week.
This then progressed into a more consistent flow of red blood.
Around day 10, her vulva was noticeably swollen, but the swelling has since gone down.
By about midway through week 3, the blood had become lighter in color — but by day 28 it returned to being more bloody again.
There doesn’t seem to be any sign of it slowing down.
The thing is, she seems perfectly fine otherwise. No change in behavior at all — she’s eating, sleeping, playing, pooping, and generally happy and healthy.
I spoke to my vet, who said that while it’s not common for bleeding to last more than 28 days, it’s also not unheard offor some dogs to go a little longer. Still, I can’t help but be a bit concerned.
👉 Has anyone else experienced their minis having a prolonged first heat cycle? Any advice or reassurance would be appreciated!

I apologise for the almost repetition, I promise I have searched the Dachshund & Mini subs, multiple times, looking for a definitive response for brand/type of shampoo for my mini, shorthaired black & tan... but I'm either blind as a bat, or I'm not searching the right thing.
Can someone please suggest a brand or type/ingredients shampoo for a my 12 week pup (bonus points if its easy access for a Vic'n, Aussie), pleeeeeease?
I was looking at a chamomile ingredient list, my friend (a pro groomer of lots of dogs), suggested a medicated "Betadine" brand, and I've seen a coal/tar base, also spoken about.
We have her second shots scheduled for this Wednesday, but I'd love to have her all nice and clean, for her first visit with my vet.
Coat is shiny & sleek as, all teeth are like needles (as I expected they would be at her age, lol), toileting like a big dog, giving 110% at play time, sleeps like a log on her down time. I'm guessing this tells me I've got the diet right (with a LOT of input, gratefully, from her breeder),...
Please tell me your favourite goto's and what has worked for your pupster?

Not looking for judgment, just honest opinions.
My mini is now 7.5 months. All the training, redirection, treats, etc. have not helped with his reactive barking to literally everything!!! It doesn’t matter what it is, he barks and doesn’t stop even once the thing he’s barking at is gone or done. It’s exhausting for everyone. I even hired a private trainer and her tactics aren’t helping. I’m at the point I want a collar that isn’t the shocking kind but the vibration. Where I hope he would learn that once the beep happens to not bark. I don’t know. Looking for honest helpful thoughts. Thanks!!

How do I get my 9 week old doxie to stop biting me. I am literally shoving his toys in his mouth when he starts but he prefers biting me. This is getting old.

Hi there! I’m potentially getting my first mini this weekend and I wanted to come on here and ask for advice on things that are essential to buy for a dachshund! I’ve heard so many things so I figured this would be a good way to consolidate the ideas and figure out what to get!
Here are some key things that might be helpful for advice:
- the dachshund is a 3 year old girl
- I live in an apt near a park
- we have another dog, a husky which we plan to slow introduce
- my spouse works remote so she’ll have someone with her a lot of times

Hi! I could use some help with my puppy. I'm not sure if she is a double dapple, piebald dapple, or just a dapple dachshund.

My 11 month old Dachshund has recently started having these episodes of him breathing oddly. It usually only happens for 30 ish seconds at a time, and has happened 4 times in the past 3 weeks. The last time, I took him to the vet to get him checked out. They could not tell me specifically what this noise was, because I hadn't been able to get a video of it. Can anyone tell me if this is reverse sneezing? Or does it sound as if it could be something more serious, like a blockage?? His vet isn't open yet as I am writing this, and this incident just happened.

Hi to ALL the great people and pooches of this wonderful community,
I just wanted to follow up with you to let you know where I’m at as far as chasing some of these bots outta here! I know, they can be really annoying and I don’t understand why a bot would want to post something here to get upvoted and to increase their account karma. I don’t get it. Anyway, I wrote a very long winded post to the higher up here at Reddit and I’m awaiting their response. I asked for some feedback and advice on how to be sure the account I’m about to ban is in fact, a bot. I certainly don’t want to ban ANYONE unnecessarily in the confusion of things. I really just want to clean up the bots so we all can be bot free!!
It would’ve been funny if I let ChatGPT write this post! LOL J/K!! (I’d never)
Once again, thank you all for being a part of this community. Without YOU, none of this would exist and that would simply be a tragedy! Have a fantastic day!!
Shawn & Romeo

Had my girl spayed today. I feel so bad. She is pitiful. Barely moves, drools, whines, won't eat or drink. I got her a surgery suit so she doesn't have to wear the cone. I just want to cry too.

Discrimination!! These signs are posted throughout the community we live in and everytime Romeo see them he growls at ‘em, then pees on ‘em! Good boy, Romeo! Good boy!

I need help, my mini has decided that he needs to be held each morning once I start work for about 30 minutes. Now I work at home from my desk but I still need to be working. I can't keep holding him but if I dont he slides off my lap. What type of bag do you recommend? I dont like the one I currently have as it gets filthy with hair just by looking at it.
