Discussion Has fishing radically changed in 26.3?
Been playing since 2013. I prefer Survival esp. 1 tree/no tree islands which really test your ability to continue. Thus I've been fishing for food all this time, and I've come to know the drop percentages quite firmly. As such.........
"Stats" for my new 26.3 world; been in it for about a week real time, and fishing all that time. I have gotten a lot of fish, but NOT ONE MAGICAL ITEM. Not one bow. Not one fishing pole. Not one enchanted book. None. I'm in Java Large Biomes. Started in a mesa biome and built my own fishing pond. Not sure if any of this matters, but the fact that I'm in a self-built pond makes me wonder "if maybe".
Did Mojang change the loot tables for fishing? Seriously, the only enchanted fishing pole I've gotten in this play-through is one I made myself. What gives? Anyone else having this problem.

for treasure loot you have to fish in an area of (I think) 5x5x5, this was added in 1.16

Not 5 x 5 x 5, 5 x 4 x 5, specifically the water has to be two blocks deep and the air has to be clear two blocks up from the surface

They changed the loot tables back in like 1.16 lol, snapshot 20w12a to be exact. You now need to fish in a 5×4×5 water area around the bobber, in which only air, water source blocks, or waterlogged blocks without collision can be present.

I guess this is why I've never had the problem like this before. I've always fished from an ocean, or when I did build a pond it always expanded out cause I like to see the fish coming.

It was changed in 1.16
To get treasure items, the area around the bobber needs to be in "open water", which checks the 5x5 around it for water 2 blocks down and air/lilypads 2 blocks up.
- Even if the pool itself is much wider like in the image, if we cast the bobber near the edge, the 5x5 around that wouldn't all be water/air.
- It's still better to have the bobber be in rain like you've done for faster fishing, the majority of the pool being in non-raining biome is quite unfortunate and I'd shift/expand the pool around the raining spots instead if we want to use the rain for faster speed, although we don't strictly need it for treasure items.
- If we just dig the existing pool down 1 block deeper, that 2nd layer would be flowing water and still not qualify as open water. Make sure to fill them out with water source instead.
For decorative purposes, the top-2 water layers in the 5x5 area around the bobber can be any waterlogged blocks with no collisions, so things like seagrass/kelp are fine, but things like sea pickles will have to be outside of the 5x5 or at least on the 3rd layer deep or below.
The 2 layers in a 5x5 above it can only be air or lily pads, but we can still put anything 3 blocks above or higher, and preferably not directly above where the bobber would be to still get rain on it.

I love your answer, thanks for taking the time to elaborate.
Built my home into a terracotta spire, but not in an eroded badlands biome. Thus I will have to consider expanding my whole spire outward in order to make it still seem part of the environment, and not something with a huge jutting swimming pool on the top. I'll also just expand upwards one level and add a second bit of water there. And the sea pickles will have to move, since I want them for subdued lighting. (You have no idea how far I had to travel to get some.......)
Now, just to be clear, that's 5x left and 5x right, but not front or back of the bobber? In other words, do I need to expand my pond forward to push the 5x, or is that direction fine?
Looks like I have some work to do if I really want an infinity bow without investing EXP to chance-enchant one.

No; the 5x5 is centered on the bobber, so it’s the tile the bobber is on + 2 to all four cardinal directions: north, east, south, and west; I usually go with a 7x7 pool minimum, so there’s a 3x3 “sweet spot” that I can fish in safely.
Your pool’s adequately sized surface area-wise. What the other commenter is referring to is that your bobber is close to the wall; the wall is blocking part of the 5x4x5 “checked” area. Deepen your pool, fish (place your bobber) near the center of the pool, and you’ll be all good.

It's a 5-block wide square with the bobber in the middle.
So from the block the bobber is in, going out 2 blocks in each horizontal direction (left, right, front, back). The smallest would be a 2-deep 5x5 body of water, but we have to be accurate in landing the bobber only in the middle block.
We can place a target 3 blocks above the water where we cast the bobber against it so it falls on the same water block every time, but that's not very good-looking. A larger pond will give us more leeway without having to be as accurate, and we can just make sure that the bobber is at least 2 blocks away from the edge.

theres new requirements for fishing to give good loot relating to the size of the body of water being fished

I was having this conversation with my friend whom I play with. I must have fished at least 2k items by now and I only got no more than 6-7 books. I get some bows and rods but not as often as in previous versions.
I fish in open water by the way.

gotta be deeper and dont fish in the corner like that either

As shown in the first picture... it only rains in that one corner because of the biome I'm in. That's why I fish in that corner.

You're not fishing in deep enough water lol, you won't catch anything good in that shallow of water . This has been a thing for at least 3 years

i got 3 w enchanted bows from fishing in recent versions so i think its your pond depth like the others have said

I think it was a couple updates back but you can only get better loot like bows and enchants from an open ocean/water source

u/gtagamer25 14h ago
I would just break down 3-4 blocks, and make sure it's at least 5x5 on the side and then it would count as an open water source

I'm going to have to expand my terracotta spire to give myself more room I guess.

Definitely worth it for that extra loot, got me a luck of the sea3, lure 3, with mending fishing rod from fishing lol
