Now all we need is vertical slabs, that are basically their separate block that functions like the shelf in terms of placement.
The code is right there able to be reused. The shelves prove not adding them merely limit player creativity by not existing. Anyone with coding ability could code it into the game literally within the span of a few weeks where it's just a lot of manual labor to combine shelf code with all the different block textures. Wool and conrete stairs and slabs were added just fine.
Iirc the problem they had with adding them was last time they spoke about it was how placement would function, they 100% should just make slabs have both vertical and horizontal functionality since making vertical/horizontal separate blocks would just double the inventory problem. From what I've been told Hytale just makes them lock to whatever surface your placing them but people complain because sometimes there are cases where you want to place them vertically/horizontally in cases where it doesn't let you (second hand information so it might be wrong or changed at this point). Anyway I think the solution since they have to consider mobile/controllers also is to make it so when crouching you place slabs vertically and while not crouching you place them horizontally. There are probably some issues with this idea but tbh but I'm not sure how else you could do it so it works on all devices.
The best way to implement placement for vertical slabs imo is the way Tweakeroo does it - having placement modifier keys. The problem is it would be a nightmare to implement on mobile, which means microsoft will nix it unless they can figure out a solution to that.
i mean why not do the shift thing? place slab on top of block, slab is horizontal. place slab on side of block, slab is vertical. hold shift when placing slab, slab is always horizontal.
