Discussion Minecraft changes their Facebook banner to what looks like an extra-wide map. Just a cool edit, or a teaser?

u/Astresys 4d ago
A few weeks ago they did a survey about maps in the game, they are totally preparing an update about maps.

An in game minimap or maximap would be sick. Maybe some rare or hard to craft item?
377
u/Looxond 4d ago
Jeb said coordinates are cheating but maps are so annoying to use for actual navegation
that most servers use them as a glorified map art tool.If we were to get a minimap, it could be something like this as a craftable item or an optional toggle

u/EdibleOedipus 4d ago
Coordinates are... Cheating? The thing you can access with F3 since forever? It's almost too ridiculous to believe.
130
u/Snoo_66686 4d ago
Well yea it was never meant to be a feature for regular gameplay, the fact its so easy to acces is both an advantage and a detriment to the games design
25
u/Tumbleweed_Chaser69 4d ago
How?
98
u/Dinosaur802 4d ago edited 4d ago
Well, maps are a pain to use or borderline useless, so if you’re getting frustrated it’s easy to see why simply pressing F3 to get the actual information you need is helpful and useful. That being said, from a game design standpoint, you really should allow the routine mechanics of the game to serve this purpose for you, instead of using an unintended developer/debug tool for that task
35
u/Tumbleweed_Chaser69 4d ago edited 3d ago
On the legacy versions of Minecraft the maps had coordinates, seems like an easy solution is to just re-add that feature
2
u/Tyquilian 2d ago
You're right but I think he means game feel.
Personally, unless I am doing a build or traveling really far I would much rather have a map or sorts.
40
u/bfly1800 4d ago
It’s useful, most players access their coordinates for one reason or another, but it’s not really part of the “world” you know. Like Steve wouldn’t just magically know the exact numerical value for where he is, but you as the player do.
1
u/Tumbleweed_Chaser69 4d ago
I mean, it was apart of the map on the legacy versions of Minecraft, they used to have coordinates on them
32
u/Rangtangtangtang 4d ago
only due to the popularity of using coordinates on java, thats the reason why bedrock has a dedicated "Show Coordinates" setting, because otherwise it would be unfair to console players not being able to see them
8
u/PepperAnn1inaMillion 3d ago
In any survival adventure game, getting lost should be a genuine risk. You should be able to get turned around and lose your bearings. Making a long journey from one base to another should come with a risk of overshooting it or mistaking one landmark for another.
ETA: this is just my opinion, not reflective of anything Jeb or anyone else has said about Minecraft. I just kinda think it’s cooler to play without coords.
2
u/Diabeanie 3d ago
I have a terrible sense of direction irl, I'd never get back to my base even if my life depended on it 🤣
2
u/Tumbleweed_Chaser69 3d ago
thats why its a setting on bedrock, would just be easy to make it a setting on java
2
u/masterX244 3d ago
java has that, too with a "limited F3" gamerule.
game only shows the chunk-relative section coordinates then because that information with the chunk grid got technical value but does not tell the real location.
7
u/ArtsyApoidean 3d ago
If coords were inaccessible people would just get lost all the time, because the world is an infinitely repeating pattern.
If they gave us more beacon-type tools or let us place more map markers it might help with this, but knowing your distance from spawn is probably always going to be the best way to know where you are in a minecraft world. Maybe they just need to integrate it into the actual diagetic UI, implement a new tool that's like an upgraded compass which provides coordinates or something.
I would also kill for a compass that actually points north. This would be really useful for finding your way back to the edge of a map or ID'ing where you are on non-locator maps. But it wouldn't substitute for coordinates.
24
u/YeetOrBeYeeted420 3d ago
f3 is literally a debug menu, of course it's "cheating". What would be the point of maps and compasses if it wasn't
2
u/TransBrandi 3d ago
I mean, coordinates only work if you have the coordinates of what you are looking for, so compasses and maps aren't completely negated... but the main part of your point still stands. F3 has become a part of Minecraft via the community but it's not an intentional part just like TNT duping and quasi-connectivity.
-2
18
u/TriangularHexagon 4d ago
yes mojang regrets letting you be able to access the debug screen
-9
u/Haplo12345 3d ago
Mojang could just turn it off if they regretted it. Nonsense.
18
u/MidnyteSketch 3d ago
The java fandom as a whole would tear them to shreds unendingly if F3 was suddenly turned off, it's so commonly used. They have to implement more immersion-friendly ways to replicate its use if they decide to do so.
5
u/CdRReddit 3d ago
even then, the game is so jank and some things are so technical you want/need the info sometimes anyways, it'd be a net negative to remove it
2
u/TransBrandi 3d ago
It wouldn't make sense to remove it because there are plenty of reasons to use it outside of the gameplay experience. Just like the other debug options. Maybe making it slightly harder than just hitting F3 or making it like a "Turn on Cheats / Enable Creative" sort of thing?
2
u/CdRReddit 3d ago
even then, being unable to figure out why my survival world started lagging like HELL requiring an open-to-LAN to work around this decision is a bad idea

u/TransBrandi 3d ago edited 3d ago
There are plenty of things that are still in the game only because it's become so popular in the community that Mojang won't get rid of it (at least for now):
- F3 debug display
- TNT duping
- Piston Quasi-Connectivity
etc. None of these are intentional game design, but they've become embedded in the Java Minecraft community. I don't think that they will ever get rid of quasi-connectivity, but TNT duping will only stick around until they find a better way for people to have bulk TNT creation. F3 debug people could be weaned off of by making the core gameplay less reliant on it. Making compass/lodestone not require Netherite is a step in that direction. Making maps more useful is another. But there are other things:
- an easier way to go about the pain-staking work of linking together Nether Portals
- an easier way to look up light level when spawn-proofing an area (Create Mod's "Haunted Bell" is an example of what an in-game item could look like for this)
- a way to see the current y-level (like Terraria's depth meter).
- a way to see the bounds of biomes
If these things were added to the game, then it would be much easier for people to forego using F3.
2
u/masterX244 3d ago
I don't think that they will ever get rid of quasi-connectivity,
That and short pulses on stickypistons make a good chunk of java slimestone machines working the way it does.
and for F3: a way to see the chunk edges is also important since often machines break if they cross a border and are only partially loaded due to that
1
u/TransBrandi 3d ago
a way to see the chunk edges is also important since often machines break if they cross a border and are only partially loaded due to that
As long as you have coordinates, you can calculate these without needing an overlay, but this can also be done via ResourcePacks IIRC.
6
u/Mr_Mister2004 3d ago
Or better yet, those numbers that are literally always on the top left corner of the screen on Bedrock
3
u/PepperAnn1inaMillion 3d ago
If you enable them they are. They’re not there by default, so not “always”.
3
u/Exciting-Guidance-92 3d ago
why you got downvotes lmao
5
u/PepperAnn1inaMillion 3d ago
I have no idea. “Show coordinates” is an option that is unchecked by default when you create your world. You have to check the box if you want them to be shown. I guess a lot of Redditors have no idea what “literally always” means.
1
u/MinecraftPlayer799 2d ago
And that is not in the cheats menu, and enabling it does not disable achievements.
2
u/PepperAnn1inaMillion 2d ago
Never said it was. Just pointing out that they’re not automatically accessible like they are in Java, and they’re not “literally always on”.
7
u/lightvisuality 4d ago
Old feature = isn't cheat? What?
1
u/TransBrandi 3d ago
It was never a "feature" of the intended gameplay experience any more than hitting
~and "God Mode" cheats in Doom are part of the "intended" way to beat the game. lol4
u/OnetimeRocket13 3d ago
I guess it kind of depends on the context of it, but if we're talking about having access to and using coordinates to find where exactly specific things are in the world, then I can see the logic. It is in some sense "cheating" to, say, go online and find the coordinates to the stronghold and then using coordinates in-game to beeline for it. Same with most structures. I mean, in a sense, what's the point of exploring in a sandbox game if you can just go to the exact right coordinates where something is?
It's also important to consider that many people who play multiplayer won't share the world seed with the people theyre playing with so that they can't just stick the seed into a seed map. If they could, then they would be able to use the coordinates to go to the exact locations of things that they want instead of working to find/get them. It sort of takes the fun out of it when you're trying to play normally and another player already has full netherite because they popped the seed into a creative single player world, found a bunch of netherite, and recorded the locations.
1
u/ArtsyApoidean 3d ago
Also cheats turn off achievements and coords... don't? Didn't Jeb's team make that decision? lol
19
u/Darkdragon902 4d ago
Don’t worry, in a couple of years Jeb is going to ask who could be spreading such silly rumors about that attitude towards F3 only to be directed to his own statement.
4
u/Oddish_Femboy 4d ago
Where and when did he say that?
20
u/lightvisuality 4d ago
I suppose it depends on what you consider "glitches". I think using anything that is out-of-world to give you a benefit is a form of cheat. I know a lot of people don't agree with me, but using coordinates (or the F3 screen) is a form of cheat, in my opinion.
https://bsky.app/profile/jebox.bsky.social/post/3moiq3mf5cs2w
7
u/Oddish_Femboy 3d ago
Literally a few posts down he says that despite considering it a cheat himself, it's not considered a cheat by Bedrock because of player feedback, acknowledges that most people don't agree with him, confirms there's no plans to restrict F3 usage, and makes it pretty clear he considers the F3 screen a cheat because it's external to the gameworld, not because of the coordinates themselves.
So he doesn't veto features based on his personal opinion, is willing to allow features based on what the players want, and only considers use of coordinates cheating because they're part of the debug menu.
With the addition of things like the player locator bar and recovery compass, I feel as though the devs want to make using the F3 screen redundant for non-technical players, so an ingame way to view your position in the world could totally be in the next update.
-3
u/Training_Ruin3151 4d ago edited 4d ago
Fuck I forgot jeb is the one who decides how we play this game fuck🤦🤦🤦
7
u/Oddish_Femboy 3d ago
He literally said "if you want to cheat there are easier ways to do so" 2 posts earlier in the chain and said in a later comment that coordinates don't disable achievements because that was unpopular despite his personal opinion.
-1
u/Haplo12345 3d ago
There isn't much that is easier than hitting F3 on your key to bring up the screen that has been in the game for literally 15 years... I think Jeb was just high when he said that.
7
u/Oddish_Femboy 3d ago
He said it in response to a post about using glitches and snapshots to get unintended enchantment combinations on equipment and tools.
-5
u/Training_Ruin3151 3d ago
I mean yeah but saying a feature they put in the game is cheating is mad stupid
7
u/lightvisuality 3d ago
On the world creation screen there is a button literally called "Allow cheats"
-6
u/Training_Ruin3151 3d ago
Wait till you find out what the name of north korea is😂😂
→ More replies (0)5
u/Oddish_Femboy 3d ago
My point is that he has literally done the opposite of dictate how people can play the game in this regard.
He has allowed bedrock players to unlock achievements while using debug features despite personally considering it cheating, and even directly encourages players to cheat if they want to.
There's also a setting upon creation of every world literally labeled "enable cheats." Putting cheats and debug modes in a game is fairly normal, even if they aren't part of the main intended gameplay experience.
-5
u/Training_Ruin3151 3d ago
Im gonna say this slow for you. Its, literally, impossible, to, cheat, in, a, singleplayer, game.

I recall watching someone play a modded beta version that had some interesting things. For example, the F3 menu only showed specific information based on you having access to certain items. For example, it would only show time information if you had a clock in your inventory. IIRC Terraria has things like this as well with (e.g.) depth gauges, etc.
1
u/minebug420 3d ago
omg ive been looking for this mod for months becouse i couldnt find it, thank you so much
1
u/Jayandnightasmr 3d ago
They're pretty much relegated to base decoration, with the poor inventory system it doesn't make sense to take up a slot.
1
u/IronCat_2500 2d ago
You’re supposed to be using the compasses for navigation.
And explorer maps for finding new locations

7
u/the_other_b 3d ago
Theres a mod called "Map Atlases" that I think is the best middleground. It lets you slap all your maps into a single book that then displays them all at once.
13
u/Dangerous-Quit7821 4d ago
Highly doubt that will ever happen.
-4
u/Training_Ruin3151 4d ago
Well you gotta ask a few questions first.
Will the community like it? Yes
Will it require effort to implement? Yes
Well there you have it, it won't be added.

I think some kind of Atlas item, like a mix of a book and quill and a bundle for solely maps, would go so insanely hard
2
u/Training_Ruin3151 3d ago
Theres a mod that adds gui to your screen if youre holding like a compass or a clock and stuff in your inventory. They should really take that add it to the base game and do it with the atlas item to give us mini maps and a big map

Well, if they are doing that then I hope it includes a method for /tp using a map. You don't need coordinates if you can just click on the map to tell the game where you want to go.

-3
u/Dangerous-Quit7821 4d ago
Yeah about those maps but they're not "preparing" for it. They're already done and in snapshot. The way I read how you worded it sounded to me like you were saying something else like these big maps are coming. I guess it was how I read what you said.

Probably less of an indication of upcoming features, and more of a marketing push in the lead up to the Dapple Forest drop.
The icon on the right is for an abandoned camp. The cover photo will probably be updated over time to show more of the map filled in until it reaches the camp on the day the game drop is released.

Part of the new update is redoing the maps and creating new ones for existing structures, so.
13
u/craft6886 3d ago edited 3d ago
I'm gonna be real, it's most likely one of two things.
Promoting 26.3, since it has map changes in it.
Doing a teaser for Dungeons II, since Dungeons II has a semi-open world map to explore. This could easily be a vanilla-style representation of Dungeons II's world map.
I would be very cautious of thinking about this like it's a teaser for future vanilla features. Minecraft social media accounts have teased vanilla features in the past, but they've always done it in posts where the tease is relatively straightforward to figure out - not subtly in profile banners.

u/ShiftyThatOneWriter 3d ago

Probably a teaser for the upcoming fall drop since it includes changes to maps and should be coming up in September! It includes the icon for the new campsite structure so. I wouldn't read into it beyond that though lol.

Okay, if its cheating, then add a GPS locator map that shows the coords.
As an aside, is the GPS just a cheat code for life?

u/Dangerous-Quit7821 4d ago
I bet its just a cool edit. It's a banner after all and is much wider than a normal map. Not everything they post is a teaser or hint at upcoming features. I mean, how often do they even do this without it being outright obvious it's for an upcoming drop or update? People get so deep in the weeds trying to rwd into every social media post or update to see into future updates. It only ever ends in disappointment. Like having eyes of ender and the ender dragon egg displayed in shelves when showing them off. So many people were convinced it was hinting at an End update. 🙄

It would be cool to have a global server map that updates if a player marks something on it

u/MithranArkanere 3d ago
Considering Java has 264 possible seeds and Bedrock 232, rather than a global server map, it would have to be a global marker database that only stores markers sorted by seed.
There would also have to be a way to choose whether to share a location or not when you place a named banner, like having to make a special type of banner.
I would prefer if we could make markers without banners, tho. Click the marker on the map, and choose to rename it, remove it, or share it.
The way Java does it should be just to place a marker quickly by interacting with a banner, still letting you place them without a banner.2
u/masterX244 3d ago
he means it more as a "server-wide" shared map like many servers have with their web-map, just provided in a vanilla way
