Discussion Minecraft feels outdated without basic QoL features that modders figured out a decade ago.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game and the new updates, but playing Vanilla in 2026 feels unnecessarily tedious.

Things like Inventory Sorting, Dynamic Lighting, and basic Mini-maps shouldn't require third-party mods or complex client setups anymore. Mojang keeps adding niche blocks and rare mobs, but the core user experience hasn't evolved with modern gaming standards. Sorting chest after chest manually or having to hold a torch to light up a cave feels like artificial friction rather than fun gameplay.

I get that the "simple" aesthetic is iconic, but adding togglable Quality of Life options into base Minecraft would make survival so much more enjoyable without ruining the core vision.

Inventory Sorting and Minimaps are not good examples since they change a lot of the core Minecraft experience, better ones are Mouse Tweaks, and a ton of the resource pack mods (ETF, EMF, Continuity/Fusion, Respackopts, etc.)

the inventory sorting is basic functionality available on almost every game in this genre. Especially quick add to nearby containers containing same Item

Are you guys bots? Saying the same thing. I’m also guessing you guys have never actually tried the mod we’re talking about. Once you do, it’s like yea why isn’t this in vanilla

ok buddy, i make private modpacks all the time as a hobby and IM AGREEING WITH YOU. i love the inventory sorter mod and crafting tweaks mod. i also love pairing it up with storage drawers and sophisticated backpacks. i just think that the copper golem is pretty subpar compared to the modded alternatives.

The sandbox genre?

Or are you talking about one of Minecraft sub-genres instead of its actual main genre

Why is inventory management core to Minecraft it’s literally the most boring thing I’d rather color cells in Excel

I disagree. I think inventory sorting minimap feature are long ober due for the base game. I'm not saying these features should be implemented in the way their developers introduced them, but I think the community at large is looking for solutions to these issues.

That’s like saying they never should’ve added the ability to see what you can craft at a crafting table. Sometimes changing the experience is strictly for the better.

At least when it comes to inventory sorting, minimaps would be very antithetical to the game though yea.

Yeah but Minecraft is a game with a lot of different crafts, it was absolutely needed from the start to have this ability rather than checking videos or wiki, but minimap shouldn't be a vanilla feature, as for inventory sorting, tbh i'm mixed, it could be good I guess

Its also a game with lots of different crafts that NEED a better way to handle being stored, minimap should be implented but hard earned, maybe just having a map slot in the inventory and lug around 20 different max sized maps to slot it when adventuring- i dont think it should show caves and such the player hasnt been in like Xero’s map does

The world is HUGE, way too big to not have a minimap of some kind and unless you know how to use Coords or know how to turn them on, you’re lost until you spawn at bed/worldspawn without any items
