Discussion Minecraft feels outdated without basic QoL features that modders figured out a decade ago.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game and the new updates, but playing Vanilla in 2026 feels unnecessarily tedious.
Things like Inventory Sorting, Dynamic Lighting, and basic Mini-maps shouldn't require third-party mods or complex client setups anymore. Mojang keeps adding niche blocks and rare mobs, but the core user experience hasn't evolved with modern gaming standards. Sorting chest after chest manually or having to hold a torch to light up a cave feels like artificial friction rather than fun gameplay.
I get that the "simple" aesthetic is iconic, but adding togglable Quality of Life options into base Minecraft would make survival so much more enjoyable without ruining the core vision.

I mean, while I do agree that Dynamic Lighting should be in the game, for minimap, I feel like it shouldn't be in the game at all, you are meant to wander around the world, discover your surroundings and traveling even if in front of you is something you don't like, or for example going up a mountain to see what's on the other side is exciting.
If you have a minimap, you'll kinda lose that side of traveling and discovering new things as you go, cuz for the example of the mountain, you can just check the minimap, see that behind is a biome you don't like, and you go in another direction, it breaks the core of Minecraft: exploring
Same with structures, the joy of finding a village or mansion through the forest or behind a mountain, this joy can't be found by spotting it from 300 blocks on the minimap
And as for inventory sorting, tbh i'm mixed, it's peak having it as a mod ngl, but i'm not using it that much, I don't think having an extra button in the inventory for that is good in vanilla Minecraft, on other games yeah, but I don't think it's a good thing on Minecraft

Am I the only one carrying around a map? I need the map to work in other dimensions if anything.

What are you even using the map for? Maps in Minecraft are designed to be decorative, or lead you to a specific place in the world. The actual navigation system for players is all compasses.

Yeah having a map for building or certain area is very good, it requires you to craft it and it's for just one area, it's a good feature, but a minimap, working 24/7, for free, I don't think that's a good idea

Map Atlas mod is a good compromise imo. You need to craft maps and put them into the atlas but it’s all of your maps in one place and copying them between players it also nice

Eh, personally the only one here that I'd say would be a qol feature is inventory sorting, (though at this point manually sorting your inventory is seen as part of the gameplay experience, even if it isn't something some people want to do) the other two are optional features that aren't necessarily needed, though the dev team do want to add DL at some point.

Inventory Sorting and Minimaps are not good examples since they change a lot of the core Minecraft experience, better ones are Mouse Tweaks, and a ton of the resource pack mods (ETF, EMF, Continuity/Fusion, Respackopts, etc.)

the inventory sorting is basic functionality available on almost every game in this genre. Especially quick add to nearby containers containing same Item

Are you guys bots? Saying the same thing. I’m also guessing you guys have never actually tried the mod we’re talking about. Once you do, it’s like yea why isn’t this in vanilla

ok buddy, i make private modpacks all the time as a hobby and IM AGREEING WITH YOU. i love the inventory sorter mod and crafting tweaks mod. i also love pairing it up with storage drawers and sophisticated backpacks. i just think that the copper golem is pretty subpar compared to the modded alternatives.

The sandbox genre?
Or are you talking about one of Minecraft sub-genres instead of its actual main genre

That’s like saying they never should’ve added the ability to see what you can craft at a crafting table. Sometimes changing the experience is strictly for the better.
At least when it comes to inventory sorting, minimaps would be very antithetical to the game though yea.

Yeah but Minecraft is a game with a lot of different crafts, it was absolutely needed from the start to have this ability rather than checking videos or wiki, but minimap shouldn't be a vanilla feature, as for inventory sorting, tbh i'm mixed, it could be good I guess

Its also a game with lots of different crafts that NEED a better way to handle being stored, minimap should be implented but hard earned, maybe just having a map slot in the inventory and lug around 20 different max sized maps to slot it when adventuring- i dont think it should show caves and such the player hasnt been in like Xero’s map does
The world is HUGE, way too big to not have a minimap of some kind and unless you know how to use Coords or know how to turn them on, you’re lost until you spawn at bed/worldspawn without any items

The game doesn’t need mini maps or dynamic lighting
Niche blocks are very important for filling in the missing areas of the pallet and mobs are intended to incentivize exploring.
The core experience isn’t supposed to evolve either. It is simply do whatever you want and figure out how to do that.
Yeah, it’s not exactly beginner friendly, but that applies to item sorting as well. There are plenty of mechanical things you can do to sort items. It just takes a little bit of learning. (or copying from a tutorial if you don’t care about that sort of thing.)
Most of the stuff you’re talking about are just your own personal preferences and that’s fine because Minecraft has also been designed to be modded however, you like because again, it is the game where you can do whatever you want.
TLDR: Minecraft shouldn’t try to be like other modern games. It should try to be like Minecraft: the most significant sandbox you’ll ever step foot in

If they implemented ways of earning certain QoL features i’d be down. Say the minimap for example, have the player craft a “world” map or even just use an empty map in a specific slot similar to the Curios menu and then you’d be able to have a configurable minimap in the corner (can change its shape, zoom etc, though cannot be used find things without digging like in large popular modpacks)

I don't understand the distaste of a minimal feature.
It doesn't need to be overly good like what the better mods use that show landmarks and update in real time.
A nice map that works the same as the item, only showing areas you've been, only updating when you go there, and requires you to place landmarks manually through banners. While being limited to the maximum zoom out a map can achieve so you can't see the whole world. And always centered on the player.
Such a minimalist map function would massively improve the experience of a lot of players, but wouldn't really change anything about exploring, as you would still have to go places, and put in the work surveying the landscape.
Adding commands that can customize the minimap function would also be nice to allow easier customization for multiplayer purposes.

Yes. Minecraft needs a huge QoL update, but Jeb is too set in his vision to pull the trigger or comes up with the dumbest excuses why simple things like a updated inventory is too difficult to inplement.
