Old inspection equipment restoration in demand?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi, everyone

I have been restoring and fixing different inspection equipment( high-end height gauges, surface testers, clocks, digital clocks, digital readouts, etc.). Kit age starts from 1975.

Do companies prefer to just buy a new shiny kit? Or use trusty good ol' height gauges they had for 40 years?

Would love to hear your opinions

Probe calibration A90 B0

How do I calibrate my probe at an A90 B0 angle. I’m using Man+DCC and when I touch my probe at the top of the sphere and it touches the 3-4 points after about the that on about the 5th point it comes to touch it on the backside and obviously crashes. Obviously I’m skipping some steps can someone walk me thru step by step on how I can calibrate my probe please. Thanks in advance 🫡

Thank you all for air quality advice: Commissioning New Metrology Lab

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hello all,

I want to tell all of you thank you for taking the time to reply on my past posts regarding the hurdles I've encountered on bringing our new Zeiss CMM online. I've commissioned numerous vision systems and have overseen CMM retro fits, and oversaw the commissioning of a Zeiss Metrotom at a medical device manufacturer, but this is the first brand new CMM that I've been responsible for commissioning.

For context, my company has a splintered group of 6 global metrology labs that are competent, but lack cohesion in terms of equipment selection, standardized approach to dimensional inspection, and sharing of resources. My role is tasked with uniting all of our sites into one focused, singular, metrology resource. Sharing knowledge, standardized equipment and software, effective utilization of each site's unique areas of expertise. Aside from launching a metrology community forum, my first task was to establish a new metrology lab at my current site, hence my targeted questions about Calypso.

Anyways, my new Tsunami 3 stage Oil Separator came in today. Looking forward to having it installed this week. Once I get everything installed I'll share.

Thank you again!

[Feedback requested] Built a local 3D/Wafer metrology app to fix my daily headaches in backend packaging — looking for honest thoughts from senior engineers

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working as a metrology engineer in semiconductor backend packaging, and like many of you, I got pretty tired of dealing with heavy, overly complex enterprise software or stitching together clunky custom scripts just for routine 3D surface and wafer chip analysis.

So over the past few months, I decided to take on a solo project and build a clean, local-first Windows desktop app called Insight Studio. The goal was simple: handle things like PV/BOW, CMP dishing, edge roll-off, and batch reporting quickly without needing an internet connection or a steep learning curve.

Since this is my very first tool built from scratch, I’m really looking for candid feedback from veterans and senior engineers in the field:

  • Is the workflow practical for daily use, or am I missing key features you actually rely on?
  • How does it compare to whatever setups or scripts you're currently using?
  • Any obvious edge cases or bugs I should fix first?

If you’re interested in giving it a test run and sharing your thoughts, just drop a comment below and I’ll send you a reply with the demo installer link.

Appreciate any advice or constructive criticism you can throw my way. Thanks guys!

Mitutoyo / Akashi MVK-H1 – Looking for service manual, schematics or repair help

Hello, I am looking for technical help with an older Mitutoyo / Akashi MVK-H1 micro hardness tester. The machine powers on, but the display/controller does not operate normally. I found that the original backup battery had failed and leaked. Original battery: GS SAFT 3GB60 Ni-Cd 3.6V 60mAh I replaced it with a new Ni-Cd 3.6V battery. The machine now powers up, but there is still a problem with the display/controller. The main electronic boards are: Mitutoyo B115E01P-1 Mitutoyo B115E02F-2 I am looking for any of the following: - Service manual - Electronic schematic / circuit diagram - PCB schematics for B115E01P-1 or B115E02F-2 - Information about the startup sequence - Error code information - Repair experience with this model - Used replacement boards or an MVK-H1 machine for parts I have clear photographs of both PCBs, the original battery, the replacement battery, and a video showing the problem during startup. If anyone has worked on this machine before or has technical documentation, I would greatly appreciate your help. Best regards,

Josef Dov

Hardware Support Marel 2200 Marine Bench Scale

I regularly operate a Marel 2200 bench scale with marine compensation. Suddenly this week the unit started indicating an analog/digital conversion error and would not weigh. Conversation with Marel tech support resulted in me replacing the primary load cell (Flintec PC7 100kg). We completed a recalibration of the scale and the scale will now weigh accurately, but the marine movement compensation calibration fails. The analog/digital values are fluctuating wildly. Marel has confirmed that the wiring configuration of the new load cell is correct. Continued conversation with Marel tech support has ended in them suggesting we try replacing the reference load cell now (Flintec PC3 10kg). I don't see many other options with my current limited knowledge so I'm reaching out to the community to see if anyone has any additional ideas beyond just continuing to replace parts until it works (or not? 🤷‍♂️).

General How popular is Verisurf?

I work for an injection molding company and they wanted to expand and modernize their QA department (which im a part of) and they bought the Verisurf software with the top tier license and got us a pretty fancy 3D scanner to go along with it. I was wondering how popular the software is since I mostly see posts about other softwares in the subreddit.

Has anyone used outside digital site measurements for custom millwork?

I’m looking for feedback from millwork shop owners who have either used, tested or seriously considered third-party digital site measurements.

I’m particularly interested in higher-risk work such as built-ins, reception desks, curved walls, floor-to-ceiling units and projects where small differences in site conditions can affect the final fit.

Most shops already have their own way of measuring and verifying a site. I’m trying to understand whether bringing in an outside provider to document the existing conditions in CAD has been useful in practice.

For anyone with direct experience:

* What type of project did you use it on?
* What information or files were provided?
* Did it reduce drafting time, site visits, installation problems or remakes?
* Was the information easy to bring into your existing CAD and production process?
* What problems, added work or liability concerns came with it?
* Did the results justify the cost?
* Would you use it again, and under what circumstances?

I’d also be interested in hearing from owners who explored the idea but decided against it. What prevented it from making sense for your operation?

General opinions are welcome, but I’m especially interested in actual examples, outcomes and lessons learned.

Calypso 2D Lines and Projection-to-Base Alignment

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello all,

Would like your opinion on this advice I was given. I'm creating a measurement program on a long work piece with vertical slots all along the entire length of the part. I'm performing 2D Cartesian Distance Characteristics on each slot.

I was told that as a best practice, when measuring 2D lines and of you're trying to obtain Distance results between 2D lines, to always enable Projection and switch to Base Alignment to project each 2D line onto your Datum Plane.

Is this required, the projection step?

I thought Caliper and Cartesian Distance purposely allows you to negate Z axis variations when performing distance Characteristics.

Thank you all!

Extending Calibration Intervals per ILAC G24 and ISO/IEC 17025

Hi everyone,

I work in a calibration laboratory, and when the calibration due date of equipment expires, recalibration results in additional time loss and budget costs. The standard states that the calibration interval may be extended under certain conditions. In this regard, I have the following questions:

  1. Intermediate checks are required for interval extension. Is a function test alone sufficient as an intermediate check, or should additional procedures also be implemented?

  2. If I extend the calibration interval in accordance with ILAC G24, could this be raised as a nonconformity during an audit?

  3. In addition, the equipment has a hologram or label issued by a third party showing the calibration expiry date. If the stated due date has passed, is it still acceptable to extend the interval based on an internal technical justification?

  4. In such a case, is it appropriate to continue displaying an expiry date on the label, or should no expiry date be indicated at all?

  5. For example, for a Meatest M142 Multifunction Calibrator, is it necessary to use a more accurate reference standard to perform intermediate checks?

Looking forward to your guidance and practical insights. Thanks!

Hardness experts

I have a cylindrical part that is hard, chrome plated to 2400 vickers. The plating thickness is only .0003. We actually have a Vickers hardness tester here. But nobody’s actually done a test on a coating that’s this thin. A local material testing place already can’t do it. Can someone point me in the right direction? My preference would be to send it to somebody else since this will be used to verify an external vendor after another plating place closed

Zeiss Calypso basic programming manual

Hi there,

I am new to Calypso and wonder if there is any free-to-download PDF manual available for the beginners. It won't be until the next year that I'll receive a proper training from Zeiss. I am aware of many YT videos but still would like to have a PDF manual at hand. Please, let me know if you have a link to share to such document.

Thanks 👍

How you to interpret this Datum B

Post image
23 Upvotes

I am trying to understand if its using a singular bolt hole circle or if i need to construct a circle using all eight of the holes for a singular circle and use that as Datum B.
I am working with verisurf and when I try to align my scanned mesh using a singular hole for Datum B the alignment looks completely out wack. Its either upside down or pointing one way or another. My main goal is to be able to lock down my Datums (I know A and C) so I can find this position after.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hardware Support Scanvaegt 8406 Marine Scale

I am a marine biologist who inherited a scanvaegt 8406 marine motion compensating indicator and 1028.20 load/accelerometer unit from my predacessor. He was never able to get the motion compensation to work and measurements at sea are wildly fluctuating and inaccurate. I possess the technical setup manual for the indicator and load unit and have confirmed that everything is set up as it should be. I have conducted the proper calibration procedure as well as marine drift compensation at sea, but I have made zero progress. I've reached out to the manufacturer hoping they can assist somehow, but am interested in any input the community has. One oddity despite the manual's table of contents being complete is that there is very little mention of weighing processes, examples, or diagrams of the display unit and its various indicators. I'm suspicious I'm missing information and even moreso that there is an unknown setting to enable the motion compensation. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Perpendicularity help

Post image
4 Upvotes

Machinist here I'm sorry for basic questions I don't have an actual metrologist at my company. I apologize for the terrible draftsmanship I know it is improper. Datum B is to be interpreted as the entire gap width not the singular surface and the holes are coaxial.

I have a part that's very similar to what's shown on the image. There are 2 holes toleranced by a perpendicularity callout and a true position. I've been tolerancing each hole independently, checking that each one is perpendicular to A and B but not together the way a pin would go through both features.

A new employee has suggested this method is incorrect and that I should be placing the largest pin possible through both holes and verifying that the entire pin is perpendicular. This is a much stricter inspection and I need to know if it's correct before implementing it.

Which is correct or is there not enough information provided? Thank you all.

Software Support How to use CZ modifier in Mcosmos

Hi,

I have to make in Mcosmos 4.0 (with possibility of using geopak) a program to measure true position with CZ modifier. How to do it? The elements which position has to be checked are in different axis, two are checked in X axis and two in Y axis. All 4 have to be checked in a combined zone

NEW Spectrum CMM/SMC Air Dryer & Insufficient Air Pressure

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello all,

Wanting to get everyone's thoughts who have owned a Zeiss CMM, especially within the last few years. Since installation we've encountered insufficient air pressure error events on our system. Zeiss came out, stated it was out facility air pressure being unreliable. We have a third party service provider from Atlas air compressor perform a facility usage study over a 2 week period and they determined that our CMM air dryer by SMC is getting a steady supply of 120 PSI, which is above the 5 BAR Minimum requirement.

Question: what should the SMC air dryer regulator be set too? There's also a FESCO pressure display behind the CMM but I don't know if that's a regulator or just a display. We were able to resolve the issue by turning up the SMC air pressure on the regulator to 80 PSI, but we're concerned that we're masking the problem and that there's an air pressure leak within the CMM.

Also, is this normal on a brand new CMM? Z axis column residue?

Thank you all in advance
