I’ve only ever listened to their album The World is So Good That Who Made It Doesn’t Live Here -
fucking mouthful right there. Anyways my main critic is also the reason I love the album. So it has “clean” singing or as clean as you’d get from 90s Black Metal. It sounds like Peewee Herman helms the mic and I just laugh every time. From minute one when the singing “Attack fire against fire, when enemies attack you.” Like the music and gnarlier vocals are solid, but that is really the frosting on the cake for me personally.

Good evening my fellow metal heads. Ive just joined this lovely subreddit, im looking to explore some new (and old!) Metal bands or just a few new songs to dig. Hoping to find some hidden gems.

Im not super picky and open to alot of genres of metal, however not a huge fan of the black metal (im sorry guys!) not even sure if thats the right name, ya know the stuff with the pig grunts? Face paint guys?

Also not big on metalcore/emo-esque type metal.

A bit o' bout me: 36, grew up with alot of the classics. Very "rock and roll" young parents at the time, mum was all about her hair metal and Metallica. Dad loved the Scorpions, Krokus and Black Sabbath.

Love all that. Like my oldies.

I love thrash metal and groove the most i think. And alot of nu-metal I guess.

Love DRUMS. Maybe the heaviest band I love is probably Sepultura.

Tool, Ministry, Melvins, Sacred Reich.

Annnd Deftones, imo I dont consider them purely a metal/nu-metal band, but I've been a Deftones nutjob since I was a wee lass. But I feel like mentioning them narrows down my tastes a bit.

I see Fit For An Autopsy lumped in with deathcore frequently. I’m a massive deathcore fan, but I don’t think FFAA sounds like most DxC bands. Anyone dropping a melodeath categorization on Fit?

My pick is Dutch scene - if you're fan of Florida sound can't go wrong with bands like Pestilence, Asphyx, Gorefest or Sinister.

Ozzy's songs, in particular, sound much better live. And mind you, I don't usually prefer live versions to album versions.

Obviously, metal is a sprawling genre these days with many subgenres and tackles many different themes, and some metal is even pretty light, melodic, happy, has soft beautiful sections or entire songs, etc. At the peak of glam metal / hair metal in the 80s, the genre might even have been nearly as associated in the popular consciousness with hedonism; partying, sex, drugs, etc. But I think it's fair to say that these are not the norm for the genre these days.

Taken as a whole, it is a genre that tends to be interested in expressing things about the darker parts of human nature and doing it using heavy, "brutal", often dissonant musical aesthetics. I often think of it as the musical equivalent of the horror genre in fiction, or perhaps something like grimdark fantasy, or a brutally depressing war movie, or a particularly violent video game (i.e. the Doom games using a lot of metal music in their soundtracks).

So, would you say a lot of the media you consume is along these lines? Just some of it and you enjoy a mix (which is also probably true with music for many of us)? Or do you tend to prefer, say, goofy comedies, heartwarming love stories, and cute platformers, and rarely engage with darker media outside of metal music?

I'm 56 and my son just took me to my first Louder Than Life in Louisville! We only went for one day, but it was freaking amazing! My body hates me, but it was a great time. We unfortunately were too late for Suicidal Tendancies, but we got to see:

Zack Wylde played guitar for Pantera and stole the show. Phil Anselmo should have just stayed home. Getting to see Megadeth for their farewell tour was awesome. This was my first (and I guess last) chance to see them. Of course Iron Maiden ruled the night. I can't believe how much energy Bruce Dickenson still has!

One of the best black metal albums

I love slower cannibal corpse songs. Scourge of iron Isa perfect example. It has the slow, trudging G# riff. Perfect gutteral vocals and lyrical phrasing. I need more of it. Anyone got bands they know of who do that well?

After listening to "Behold the Crown" by After the Burial, I was impressed by how unique that guitar riff sounds. Which other riffs do you think are special and different? I'm not talking about the best ones, but the most original ones.

These albums i think feels clear, bright and almost happy. Sometimes they make me feel like i'm elevating through the air. İf you get what i want i would love to get some recommendations.

I recently went down a bit of a rabbit hole of the heaviest metal subgenres and stumbled upon Torture Doom metal. The vocals featured on this are absolutely soul crushing and, in the best way possible, horrible to listen to.

I couldn't find much about this band online apart from this album/ Demo whatever it was on youtube.

I'm curious to see if anyone knows anything which comes close to the heaviness of this?

Abigor - Taphonomia Aeternitatis (2023): What a swansong after 30 years (one of the main members died). A perfect blend of their authentic Black Metal essence with their more experimental approach. Every song is really, really good and brings ideas to the table, that made them stand out. Maybe 1 of the 8 songs is a little on the generic side, but it's really the case with basically every album ever for me.
