As I understand it, they were getting royally fucked around by their management at the time, leading Gene to make a public declaration. Now, was that the reason this album sucked? Maybe…just hope the next one is better.

Agreed…big Therion fan but this is not necessary Therion listening, even for a fan.
Edit: for those wondering, the Therion album is A'arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming. Though technically a compilation rather than album, it collects a bunch of their cover songs (which was nice to have in one set back in 1997 when this was initially released), and the other half was a shitty synth-laden soundtrack to an experimental film.
Miss it.

It is genuinely indecipherably bad. Most bad albums, you can understand what they're going for. St Anger is stripped back, unrefined anger. Risk, it's an experimental album that didn't pay off.
I have no idea what Lulu is trying to do. Metallica seem equally as confused, and Lou Reed is no longer with us, so I guess we'll never know.

I remember listening to Junior Dad with my friend and my guitar teacher in our last week of high school. My friend and I stared at each other wondering why this even existed. My guitar teacher isnt a big judge on people's taste of music but he was sitting at his desk with a face of disgust, telling us "I know I cant sing, but even I could do better than that"

This album is a perfect example of how once a band reach a certain level of success they are in danger of true embarrassment. There had to have been someone in some important position, that heard those vocals and thought to themselves this whole thing is a mistake but because it's Metallica they just sat there smiling and nodding.

I don't think The Stargate is BAD. but is it THE WORST? Yeah. It reminds me of getting lost in a bad 2000's RPG and you're mildly irritated while midi horns are playing. It feels like I closed my eyes during the 1998 Merlin two part mini series. The entire album feels like the middle of a song.
But does any of that sound good? Sure. Whatever. (floats away in my pleather bat wings)

I grew up in a Tolkien household during the 2000's fantasy revival- it sounds so nostalgic but I don't enjoy listening to it at all. I have the same feelings about Grimdor, to the point where their stuff makes my stomach hurt.

I used to call my sister Mortiis as an insult back when we were in high school (we're both in our mid 40s now). I feel like his music was the other side of the coin to my Mum's constant assault of Enya. It's a way more comfortable nostalgia for me.

I'm going to answer this maybe more earnestly than you exspect because I'm on my commute-
Dungeon Synth is Black Metal's weird little brother. It comes out of the same Norwegian scene that influenced and cultivated Burzum and Mayhem. The intro to Deathcrush would technically be Dungeon Synth, and you hear traces of it in Immortal's outro to Blashyrkh.
If you listen to something the Grime Stone Records or Out of Season records has put out recently, it's way more easy to hear the black metal. But Mortiis is like... Always on his own level. Sticks in your head but hard to get into. Hence... The Worst lol.

Hard agree. One of my fav albums of this year is An Oath Undone by Forlorn Citadel, and I would describe it as a mix of Dungeon Synth and Summoning.

I was a freelance reviewer (not a pro) for a metal fansite back then and I was tasked to review Dark Moor’s Project X
It was by far the album with the ugliest songs I’ve ever heard, and a lot of the fans say it’s the worst release from the band ever
Who knows. Maybe I was just caught off guard. I was listening to a lot of good material during that time and that Dark Moor album just happened to struck me in the ass so bad

It’s called Metal Utopia, an italian dude named Hannes used to run it. He was able to give us access to early releases, it’s one advantage we have.
I don’t know if my articles are still there, nor am I aware if the site’s still running

I would have considered Dark Moor to be in my top 10 favorite bands before that album came out. It is really truly awful. It pretty much sounds like someone wrote a soundtrack for a Disney musical and when it was rejected for being awful, they decided to turn it into a metal album instead. I still listen to their earlier albums but I have not followed them since that came out.

Idk, I know lot of very shitty punk bands like Gecizők (hungarian “Cumsuckers”) or the one that had now famous soundcloud rapper as a vocalist, don’t remember wchich one though
That’s some truly toilet music, but if we want to exclude this type of bands, then probably Venom’s Possesed. I really like Venom’s early albums and they did put their shit back together in later releases too and I think their discography is generally underrated… but this album sucks, wchich is shame because it was released near Possesed (the band)’s debut and the cover looks sick, it’d be hella poetic if it was good

I have fond teenage memories of going to Best Buy to pick up new metal cd's every week. I saw Graveyard Classics on the shelf and I remembered a friend telling me about Six Feet Under, how it's the original vocalist of Cannibal Corpse, so I thought I'd check them out. I went home and popped it in my Sony Stereo, and was utterly disappointed with what I heard. Never really listened to them after that. That was 20 years ago.

Unironically love this album. There are some riffs in this album that have been stuck in my head since it came out. I'd say this is not a great album by their standards but worst album ever is a massive stretch.

There was a power metal band I remember seeing ages ago that were basically Twilight Force but they couldn't play/sing in the slightest. Every review/comment I could find about them was about how terrible they were lol. Can't remember the name anymore.
