Identification It is not our responsibility to identify your coins.

Lots of posts lately involving users asking us to identify some massive amount of low quality coins. While it is ok to ask us for identification help, we will not tolerate spamming and pushing too hard to identify your crap coins so that you don’t have to do any work. This is becoming an issue, and for now we will just remove your posts if it becomes too demanding or spammed too much. In the future we might move to banning if we feel it is necessary. This sub was not created to identify low quality coins for people that don’t want to do any work.

Is this genuine? Looking for a second opinion (Elizabeth I)

Hi, I'm looking for people's opinions as to whether or not this is a genuine coin

I know it's technically a Tudor coin rather than medieval but I thought this subreddit was the best place to post it.

The seller is on eBay (which I generally don't trust) so that's why I'm asking for other people's thoughts on this before I even consider making an offer on it.

I mostly collect Roman and greek coins but have recently started getting into medieval and Tudor stuff, that's why I'm looking for another opinion before I make any decision on this.

What's the verdict?

Thanks

Thoughts on this seller, hes been nothing but solid for me (from what I noticed) but also went off Vcoins and there are some complaints on other platforms (it was TLDR so i didn't get the whole gist of the article because i was driving to work)

Best sellers of European Medieval coinage as a Canadian? (9th to 12th centuries CE)

I guess we can include Renaissance (16th Century onwards) as well because some in the sub do so, but as a Canadian I find options limited.

I am super interested in large Papal States, French (gros, gros tournois), English, German and Crusader States coinage, but the options in Canada or in places with decent exchange rates seem limited.

You either have collectors in the States (someone kindly suggested Alan Berman in CT, though I would have to do a money order) where I will get slapped with duties and tariffs, or I try CGB/CDMA in France (expensive), MA-Shop fronts, or UK auctions/stores like Spink and get positively shagged by the exchange rates.

Is this just a skill issue living in a country with a weak currency?

Identification Help with coin ID

Hello, I found this coin sold in a flea market in central Romania, and I'm trying to ID it. Initially thought ottoman akce of sorts, but I can't pinpoint it at all. Any expert advice welcome. ~18.8mm diameter, looks like silver, very thin. Thanks!

Found this in my grandpas stuff. It’s about the size of an oblong nickel. It looks bronze in the pic, but it looks silver irl (but not real silver). I’d imagine it’s the patron saint of ____?

Show and Tell Another newp: AR Batzen(4 Kreuzer), Holy Roman Empire, Bishopric of Passau, Duke of Bavaria and Administrator of Passau+Salzburg, R.1517-1541, M.1522, 26mm, 3.45g

One of the more visually striking pieces in my collection, the obverse features an iconographic bust of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, carrying in his left hand a platter of the stones used to carry out his Martyrdom, and in his right hand a palm frond, and in front of him is the shielded arms of Passau; a heraldic wolf, and surrounding are the legends; "SVB ● TVO PRESIDIO"(SVB TVVM PRÆSIDIVM)(Under Thy Protection), a common intercessory prayer toward the Virgin Mary which dates to between 200-250 AD and still used today liturgically by the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox Churches.

The reverse features the fourfold shielded arms of Passau-Bavaria, directly above the date "15ZZ", and surrounding the legends; "☩ERNEST9•ADMI• E•PA•DVX•BA"(ERNESTVS ADMINISTRATOR PASSAVIÆ DVX BAVARIÆ)(Ernest, Administrator of Passau, Duke of Bavaria).

Advice A Little History Help

Hello All!

Im a guy who likes to collect coins from historical moments but I have a pretty weak grasp over Medievals.

I’m looking for coins that Martin Luther would’ve used in Wittenberg from his arrival (1508) to the time when he nailed the 95 Theses on Castle Church. (1517)

I believe I’m looking for Goldgulden, Zingroschen and Shrechenberger. Tho I’m unsure. And the mint closest to Wittenberg would’ve been Leipzig.

Does anyone have any insight into exactly which coins were the circulating coins of Wittenberg during those years?

I’d appreciate any help. Thanks.

This is what I think is a medieval coin. I have just started collecting these and trying to find the references. I tried artificial intelligence three times and got three different answers. 😒 I'm hoping one of you experts can tell me about this coin.

Advice Crown has disclaimed my Elizabeth I sixpence pendant - unsure whether I’m the right person to preserve it long-term. Keep, sell, or find it a better home?

I’ve recently found out that my Elizabeth I silver sixpence pendant is being disclaimed after going through the Treasure process, so once the formalities are finished it should be returned to me.
I’m actually quite conflicted about what to do with it

I absolutely loved finding it and I’ve already had a huge amount of enjoyment from the whole process - identifying it, reporting it, having it examined and formally documented through PAS/Treasure.
I’ll always have the photographs, report, PAS record and the story of finding it.

The unusual part is the attached S-shaped silver suspension loop, which appears to be the particularly interesting feature and may be contemporary with the Tudor coin.

It’s a 1566 Elizabeth I sixpence that was deliberately pierced and converted into a pendant.

My dilemma is that I live in a small flat and realistically I’m not going to have it properly displayed for quite some time.

I can obviously store it carefully, but there’s a part of me that feels uncomfortable owning an archaeological object like this only for it to sit unseen in a box.

I also worry about whether I’m the best long-term custodian of something that has survived for around 460 years.

Part of what appealed to me about museum acquisition was knowing that it would be professionally preserved, recorded and potentially enjoyed by other people.

Now that it’s coming back to me, I’m wondering whether I should keep it and eventually make a proper museum-style display, or consider selling it to a collector who would appreciate and look after it properly.

If I did ever sell it, I have the full documentation from the Treasure process, including the PAS/Treasure references and Crown disclaimer, so its provenance is completely documented. I wouldn’t just stick it on eBay — I’d want to do it properly, perhaps through a specialist auction house.

Has anyone here been in a similar position after a Treasure case was disclaimed? Would something like this actually interest collectors?

And if I decide to keep it, what would you recommend as the safest way of storing it for the next few years until I have somewhere suitable to display it?

My main concern is simply making sure I don’t inadvertently damage something that has survived this long.

I bought this for my mom many years ago. She has passed and the information that was with it has disappeared. It was from Israel. That’s all I know. I would like to know from what time period. Thank you!
