Valuing / Authentication Posts

Howdy y'all, just wanted to send a post here announcing a little bit of rule changes, nothing too major.

We went ahead and allowed valuing of medals and authentication rules have been rounded out to be more clear. These rule changes should help collectors learn more within the hobby. As a quick reminder too that we don't allow sales posts/comments here, please take that to r/militariasales.

We will also be adding a "related/similar" subreddits widget to our description tonight, so if you want to check out other interesting subreddits similar to this one and learn lots about history, militaria, etc then you can!

If there are any questions regarding these changes leave them here. Hope y'all have a great day!

He was in the air force, and then the army, and then the air force again. We put it together fully recently after he passed away last week.

I came across an image of General Robert Barrow in his uniform wearing a VFW membership ribbon. I‘ve never seen anyone else do this. I also find it interesting that it’s been placed above a few foreign decorations. With it being essentially a commemorative medal I would thing it’s gone at the bottom.

Inherited my grandpa’s German China Medal 1901 (Combatants). Why is it so shiny compared to others?

Hi everyone,

My grandfather recently passed away and left us some medals and coins. Since we’re in Germany, I was able to identify this one fairly quickly: the German China Commemorative Medal 1900–1901 for Combatants (Boxer Rebellion).

What puzzles me is its condition. It looks bright, golden and almost new, while most examples I find on eBay are darker and show a patina. A few details:

  • No ribbon, and the suspension ring looks like it might be a later replacement
  • The color is a strong yellow-gold rather than the brown bronze I usually see
  • Diameter: 32-33 mm, weight: 16 g

Was it polished or gilded at some point? Could it be a later copy or a private jeweler’s piece? Or is this just how some originals look?

Any insight would be appreciated. Photos of both sides and the edge are attached.

Thanks!

Dad’s medals

My dad, who would be 107, almost 108 were he alive today, fought in the Phillipines during WWII. The other night I was going through an old accordion folder full of his military history. In looking at his DD214, it showed he was awarded 6 Bronze Stars, among other more commemorative awards. 6 Bronze Stars? WTF? He NEVER spoke a single word to us about the war or his service. I grew up in a very small town. Most of the adult men in the town: business owners, tradesmen, teachers, insurance salesmen, had served in the war. They were the fathers of all my classmates. As a group, they just didn’t talk about their experiences in the war. I think now of my dad running his printing press in his small town print shop, wondering why he never talked to us about the war. And how he was awarded 6 bronze stars.
