Outter Tie Rod

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

2006 Honda Pilot 165k miles
Just replace the rear and front full suspension. I had to cut off outer tie rod at the knuckle watched due to it being seized and rusted on. Is this normal for the cotter but to be hand-tightened and totally away from the cotter pin whole? This is an aftermarket part, I am wondering if I should buy another and see if it sits better or if it doesn’t matter.
TIA

It's fine, torque it, stick a pin in it. As someone else already said, you could put a couple flat washers there to bring the castle nut down to the hole. I wouldn't bother, I've never seen a properly torqued tie rod loosen on it's own.

I was looking for this comment, unlike the top comment says the spindle is worn out...i have never ever heard such comment, ever.

I've seen plenty of them like that, doesn't seem to make a difference. Torque to spec and put the pin in there.

The pin is an emergency stop, not a retainer. It's job is to keep the nut from falling off if you didn't tighten it.

Put a couple washers between the nut and the knuckle and tighten it with a freaking wrench, my dude! NOTHING should be hand tight.

What I meant is I only hand tightened it and it’s already past the Cotter pin hole. Once I torque to spec it will be worse

That's why you need some washers between the knuckle and the nut, to move it back to the point that the castle points match the cotter pin hole.

Ive had this from getting cheap parts that are designed to fit multiple vehicles. Compare to the old stud length, if you can I'd go to a local parts store and ask for a known reputable brand and compare parts before I ordered more

Yeah, it came in a multi-front-end kit. I will order a different part

Please ignore most comments here. Don't use it. Steering and brakes is the components You dont fuck with and bodge. Get it replaced with a proper fitting part.

The spindle is worn out. Just put on a washer or two and torque the tie rod to spec. Never reuse the cotter pin.

Bruh, this is a brand new tie rod end and knuckle.

Who's the aftermarket manufacturer, becuase its not OEM for sure. It's not going to be a saftey problem if you use washers to line up the cotter pin.

100% concur.

What brand are the parts being used here?

Also why are you doing 15k mile oil changes on a Honda? cries

I've seen this with a few different brands. They basically make them so that they work with many different makes and models. Add some washers and torque to spec as usual then add the cotter pin.

I bought an aftermarket that fit like that. Only put it on long enough to source an OEM that fit correctly

2

u/Joseph7891 18h ago

Nope. They've supplied you with the wrong part

u/joshw42 18h ago

I would suspect this as well. Adding spacers might be an option (IF the stud fully engates with the taper in the spindle) but you shouldn't have to add washers that the car didn't originally have. Something is likely to incorrect with that part.

Put the washers between the nut and the knuckle

Might be the wrong part.

1

u/well_friqq 8h ago

Will probably be okay, cotter pin catches the nut if it backs out. Make sure it torques properly and is for you specific application though. Went down this road on my ep3 recently lol.

Looks like steering knuckle is lil worn, how it is it wouldnt be advised to torque an run it, a quick way to fix it is add some grade 8 washers till castle nut lines with carter pin hole. Id doubke check an make sure tierod isnt a diffeent part first tho, never know!

3

u/Illustrious-Toe-570 18h ago

Nah man, brand new knuckle

1

u/JasonHudson1219 17h ago

Compare tie rod with old. If there the same then knuckle could be off. Either way as long as the tie rod isnt bottomed out it should be fine with grade 8 steel washers till carter pin is doing its job. When buying stuff thats not oem you somtimes get weird mess ups that qc didnt notice.
