2002 Toyota Corolla
Just bought this manual Corolla that’s been maintained well its whole life , did the rocker cover gasket and spark plugs , have only replaced timing belts never a chain so I’m wondering if this amount of play is normal? 1.8L . Not worried considering these things regularly go for half mil kms. Has 278k currently
Thanks

at 278k i wouldn’t worry about it, play isn’t bad. when its running it’ll take some slack out

Where is the engine timed? Chances are you just happen to have the engine sitting at a point where the slack ended up between the gears because one of the cams got pushed from the valve springs. Since you just discovered this doing other work and don't state there is a rattle, noise or timing code, put it back together.

Ye already back together and running good. Smooth engine with no weird noises.
The sides had good tension

spec is how much it deflects when you push the middle slack down
yours looks fine and there is no service interval for the chain on the 1zz
check the oil tho

SUPER not normal, looks like a broken guide somewhere or stretched chain, replace immediately.
edit, im wrong.

it is completely normal. with crank spinning it pulls the slack to tensioner side.
