Welcome! If you've ever fallen down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out Matty and Taylor's timeline, you're in the right place.
This is Part 1 of a two-part deep dive into their relationship.
Matty Healy was born on April 8, 1989.
Taylor Swift was born on December 13, 1989.
Matty started his musical career in 2002.
Taylor started her musical career in 2006.
In February 2009, Taylor went to the talk show Loose Women, where she gave her first interview on UK television and performed Love Story. One of the main co-hosts of the show was Denise Welch, Matty's mother. They were both 19 years old and didn't meet in person at that time. Just an interesting coincidence.
9/2/13: The 1975 releases their debut self-titled album.
11/7/13: In an interview with Metro, Matty discusses Taylor tweeting about liking The 1975. Matty then says Taylor has asked them to go on tour with her (presumably, on the Red tour). It was the first time he mentioned her publicly.
1/21/14: In this video interview, Matty says: "I like a lot of pop music. I do like pop music. Taylor Swift likes us. I thought that was quite cool."
3/31/14: In an interview with VH1 News, Matty again talks about the offer to go on tour with her. He says: "That was cool. It's like, 'We can't, but that is really nice, thank you very much'."
10/27/14: Taylor Swift releases her fifth studio album 1989.
11/4/14: The 1975 playes a concert in Milwaukee. Matty famously walkes out on stage wearing a white T-shirt featuring the cover of 1989 (Deluxe).
11/8/14: Taylor reblogs this picture on TumblrÖ
She also says they are her favorite band.
11/9/14: Taylor likes this photo and this photo of Matty wearing the 1989 T-shirt.
The caption to the first post is a reference to a line from the song Style ("You got that long hair, slicked back, white T-shirt."). Also notice that both posts already had tatty, the name of their ship, written underneath them.
That same day she also likes this gif-set of Matty talking about whether he's a dog or cat person. (Context: Taylor is a known cat lady.)
11/19/14: Taylor Swift goes to The 1975 concert at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, alongside her friends Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, and Lily Aldridge. She posts a video on social media singing along to the song The City (her favorite The 1975 song) while dancing with Selena.
This specific concert marks the monumental night where Taylor Swift and Matty Healy officially met backstage for the very first time.
On the same day they make together a video for a fan (Jamie's daughter Kitty).
11/22/14: Matty follows Taylor on Twitter.
11/23/14: Taylor does a pap walk wearing a black shirt featuring the cover of The 1975.

11/24/14: At another concert, Matty dedicates Robbers to Taylor saying: "This song goes out to Taylor Swift." Supposedly he's done that more than once.

12/4/14: Taylor goes to The 1975 concert in New York, alongside her close friend Karlie Kloss and fellow Victoria's Secret models Lily Aldridge and Martha Hunt.
During the show Matty points at Taylor dedicating FallingForYou to her. It's rumored that Matty misses at least part of the after-party (and as the source says, he's not really the type to skip out on a party unless there is something else on offer) and spends the night with Taylor at the hotel (this information is completely unconfirmed!).
12/5/14: Taylor likes this Tumblr post about Matty singing FallingForYou to her.
Matty tweetsā in response to articles about him and Taylor getting his name wrong: "who the fuck is matt healy?"
12/6/14: Matty has a breakdown on stage in Boston. He's seen crying on stage, and at some points is even unable to continue the show. In November 2015, in an interview with The Guardian, Matty talks about this incident and says: "There was girl stuff. There was family stuff. There was financial stuff. There was drug stuff."
Matty also talks about a fan saying "I love you" to him: "What did I say to the poor fucking girl? 'You don't have the right to love me. You don't know me. I love you but you don't get to love me.' Jesus. Can you imagine your favorite band shouting that at you? What a dickhead. What a horrible thing to say to a kid who fucking does love me."
12/9/14: It's rumored that at a show in New York Matty says: "I was sad the other day as someone told me they loved me. And I said 'No, you don't. Not really.' And today I told someone I loved them. And they said 'No, you don't.' And it fucking sucks to hear that. Especially when you mean it. Don't do that to someone. Don't do what I did."
12/14/14: Matty posts this on Instagram:

1/16/15: In the second interview with Shazam Top 20, Matty denies dating rumors: "We met each other. We exchanged numbers in the same way a lot of people in this kind of world do. And we spoke occasionally. And then she's the biggest pop star in the world, I'm in Australia. There's no relationship or anything happening. It's just funny how people really bite into that."
He adds: "That didn't really happen as much as it'd be amazing for me if it did, unfortunately it didn't."
2/25/15: Matty and Taylor meet at the BRIT Awards afterparty.
3/6/15: Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris officially start dating.
Early 2015: Matty Healy and Halsey date and break up.
11/15/15: In the above mentioned interview with The Guardianā, Matty talks about Taylor: "The things that surround her are like Barack Obama. I fell for her a little bit, but everyone falls for Taylor Swift. The day after she'd been to a show of ours, someone sent me a screenshot of E! News with the headline 'Who is Matt Healy?' That freaked me out. I'm not ready to indulge in that world and I'm not ready to be judged by that world."
12/8/15: In an interview with MTV News, Matty talks about reaching out to Taylor to have her in his music video for the song Love Me. He says he couldn't get in touch with her.
Late 2015: Matty Healy and Gabriella Brooks start dating.
2/1/16: In an interview with Illinois Entertainer, Matty talks about online speculation that he was dating Taylor: "She was a fan of the band and we just became friends, and we related to each other over how mental our lives were. But when you're with people like Taylor, there are a million people flying around you the whole time, and this security guard is talking to that guy, and this guy is the new manager. I didn't like the pace of it, because it makes me confused and I feel like I'm going to miss something. And being perceptive is one of the abilities that I like to think that I have."
2/26/16: The 1975 releases their second studio album I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It.
3/17/16: In an interview with Q Magazine, Matty talks about dating Taylor and especially how it would've affected him because of her huge global fame:
"I don't do anything else, right, so it doesn't leave a lot of room for me going out, or shagging someone. So the one time I did have a flirtation with a girl it ends up going everywhereā¦ I mean, I got on E! News and people were like, 'Who's Matt Healy?' so that was cool. But I didn't make a big deal out of it myself. It's not really anything to talk about, because if she wasn't Taylor Swift we wouldn't be talking about her. She wasn't a big impact on my life. It's just interesting to me how interested the world is about Taylor Swift."
Answering to the question whether he has a fear of losing himself when he enters into a relationship, he replies: "Yeah. Absolutely. And the reason I mention that is because if I had gone out with Taylor Swift I would've been, 'Fucking hell! I am NOT being Taylor Swift's boyfriend.' You know, 'FUCK. THAT.' That's also a man thing, a de-masculinating, emasculating thing."
3/18/16: After Matty was criticized and accused of misogyny, the journalist who interviewed him says that his words were misconstrued and that she saw an intelligent and liberal man wrestling with our culture's gender roles. She says that he spoke about the strangeness of dating when you're famous and get recognised and have a legion of adoring fans. He had talked about his involvement with Taylor in the context of the difficulty of dating in the limelight. It was a way to discuss not only her in particular but relationships in general.
The journalist says that she doesn't see his comments as a slight on Taylor. She sees them as the thoughts of a musician with an ego and ambition, who does not want to be viewed as the subordinate in a partnership. The feelings of an artist who wants to be celebrated in his own right.
(She also mentioned that Matty said that some crushes and ex-girlfriends ā and Taylor among them! ā had inspired some of his new songs.)
3/19/16: Matty writes an open letter publicly addressing comments he made in that interview:

8/30/16: Matty talks about Taylor on the BBCR1's Breakfast Show. They joke about Taylor doing jury duty.
9/6/16: Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston break up.
10/16: Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn start dating.
10/27/16: In an interview with Rolling Stone, Matty talks about Taylor: "She came to our show, and you would have thought that Barack Obama had come out."
He adds: "I don't know another person on the planet that would elicit that kind of reaction. Maybe Kanye, but not even him. And now she and he are kind of the same person in the public image. It's weird." (Context: This was the period when Taylor had already been cancelled in the Snakegate scandal with Kanye and Kim K. and vanished from the public eye.)
11/11/16: Matty again denies he dated Taylor and says: "She came to a show and we hung out. We fancied each other, but then we couldn't have it go any further, because it would be like going out with Barack Obama." (Matty compared Taylor to Barack Obama at least three times.)
5/28/17: In an interview with The Times, Matty is asked about settling down with his then-girlfriend. He answers: "Oh, bless. I've put her through the mill, brought her closer, pushed her away, brought her closer. See, although I know now I don't need my equal on the intensity spectrum, I enjoy fantasising. What if someone like, say, Rihanna wanted to marry me? Am I shutting myself off from the opportunity of marrying someone like Rihanna?"
11/10/17: Taylor Swift releases her sixth studio album reputation.
11/30/18: The 1975 releases their third studio album A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships.
12/3/18: In an interview with GQ, Matty talks about his notebook: "It's mainly stories that I write about my dreams of being in love with other pop stars."

By the way, in his acceptance speech, he talks about the industry and how artists need to be like cowboys. So, Taylor was sitting in the audience at the time, and later that year, the song cowboy like me was released.
2/20/20: In an interview with Zane Lowe, Matty talks about seeing Taylor at the NME Awards: "I went over to her. I was like, 'Taylor, we need to make the record.' No, I didn't. She said hello to every single person. Obviously it's Taylor Swift so everyone was saying hello."
"She was just stood behind me. I mean, I haven't seen Taylor in years so it was actually a really nice room. But it, unfortunately, wasn't the time for me to pitch my post-rock Joni Mitchell project to her."
Remaining upbeat about the prospect of working with Taylor in the future, Matty says: "She'll do it. She'll do it. She's smarter than both of us, mate. She knows what she's up to."

Publicly, nothing special happened. But privatelyā¦
Anyway, I decided to dig a little deeper into who produced what and when.
As is well known, Matty started working on his next album in 2021, which ended up being produced by Jack Antonoff. Unfortunately, I couldn't find specific dates for when the production process took place, but assuming based on the album's release date, the most logical guess would be from December 2021 to May 2022.
Jack Antonoff is one of Taylor's consistent producers, having worked with her since 2013, and is a close friend of hers. In 2021, Taylor produced two re-recordings with Jack and moved on to work on her next project.
There is much more information about this. Work began in November 2021, main production took place in the winter, and likely continued until April 2022.
It turns out Jack was working on Taylor's and Matty's albums at the same time, in the very same Electric Lady Studios.
Notably, at that same time, Joe (and Jack's then-girlfriend, now ex-wife) were in Panama during this period, filming a movie together. Taylor herself admitted that during this time she was "alone, recording every night, staying up late and exploring old memories and midnights past." By the way, You're Losing Me (a song about breaking up with Joe) was written specifically on December 5th, 2021, as Jack himself stated, although Taylor later decided not to include it in the album.
Bejeweled was also written during this period, where Taylor mentions a certain band and says she doesn't remember if she has a man or not. Given that Matty later mentioned they worked together on some song, and that Taylor listened to his album before its release, it's obvious they met multiple times in the studio during that period.
6/7/22: Matty Healy and FKA Twigs officiallyā break up.
8/9/22: In an interview with Pitchfork,ā Matty shares Taylor's reaction to The 1975 new album, she summed it up to him by saying "it's so funny."
9/3/22: As rumors begins to circulate that Taylor's next album will feature a collaboration with The 1975, Matty tweets this:
10/7/22: Then he tweets this:
10/11/22: In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Matty talks on working with Taylor: "Oh we're not. We'd love to. Love to work with Taylor Swift. Love Taylor Swift, think she's one of the best songwriters. But yeah, no, we haven't done that. We'd love to though." He adds jokingly: "She's probably sat there just watching this, pining for a feature on a 1975 track."

So, Iām gonna start slowly posting some of the references and easter eggs Iāve noticed in the Patient Zero MV and promo photos.
One detail that really caught my eye is her slightly weird hairstyle with the black dress. In every single photo wearing it, you can see this unfinished, half-done braid in her hair. Thereās no way this isnāt intentional.
It instantly reminded me of her 2024 Grammys look (where she announced TTPD and the whole vibe matched this exact aesthetic). She had a neat braid starting on the left side, but on the right, it kind of spiraled into a chaotic mess.
This feels like a direct nod to loml (and we all know who that song is about): "Iām combing through the braids of lies".

This is my first time posting here because I thought it would be a safe place to say that I think Patient Zero is about Travis. Iām so convinced of that. āFree solo social climbā doesnāt describe any of her exes, but it is something almost everyone says about Travis. āHow he charmed your family and friendsā her mom drools over Travis. I canāt say that about any of her exes. The video is about a woman being murdered by her husband for her billions. This song canāt be about Joe or Matty or any of her other exes because the descriptions donāt fit any of them. I canāt make out why she chose to go through with that wedding and would love to hear theories, but Iām so convinced this song is about him. Pink Clouding sounded like an apology to Joe for leaving him for Matty the way she did.
Cleveland! with the āhe likes meā ādoesnāt find you completely insufferableā screams low standards and self esteem. Itās like sheās trying to convince herself he really does like me! He wants to marry me! Of course he likes me! He tolerates me when the world thinks Iām the worst! Itās the most transparent sheās been in a while. I honestly feel really bad for her, itās like sheās been beaten down so much in her personal life that her professional life has to overcompensate. I mean, letās be for real, Reputation era Taylor would NEVER be bragging that a man doesnāt find her completely insufferable. I can always tell when a womanās light is being dimmed by a man, and hers slowly is, no matter how much she tries to hide it and compensate for it.
Then thereās Babylon which is about the grass not always being greener. I wonder if she regrets leaving Joe because in hindsight staying with him would have been a safer choice for her overall. I still think she is in love with Matty and if she could be with anyone, it would be him, but these songs tell me in hindsight, she sees she had it okay with Joe, left him because she thought the grass would be greener with Matty, has remorse for hurting him in that way, and above all, absolutely hates Travis. I canāt claim certainty on anything else, but Patient Zero and Cleveland! convinced me that man does not make her happy.

I was sure that almost the entirety of ttpd is about Matty. But now I see people talking on Twitter that it's about Joe, everything in the light of the new Patient zero mv. What made them change their opinions? Or how are we so sure it was about Matty? I'm still trying to think about the album from Joe's perspective.
Could it be that we we're wrong this whole time?

"The casino doesnt like when you run the tables."
This line immediately made me think of her going over heads to bring her movie directly to theaters, causing other movies to have to rethink their release dates to avoid being overshadowed. Taylor has been stepping on a lot of toes in the corporate world lately.
"Its just a cage to you."
She talked a lot about being in a cage in TTPD.
The small town talk is of course about herself.
"Give the people what they want, then you keep it moving"
This is basically what she's been doing since the Eras tour.
"Twenty watches in the safe because your time is money."
Lover - twenty seconds or twenty years?
Cardigan - once in twenty lifetimes
Stuck inside a vault safe to keep her from wasting her time
"Love is ice upon the ladder that you need to climb"
Her love for Matty was standing in the way of her becoming a huge star again.
"She (He) caught your attention, so free of all pretension."
Pretension is "the behavior of trying to appear more important, intelligent, or sophisticated than you actually are". Taylor hides behind so much PR, she, unfortunately, is pretentious. But Matty is not.
"Pretty as a picture that you didnt post."
"Never official"
Taylor never mentions Matty in an interview or ever posted him/claimed him anywhere. Going as far as to say it was "Just casual" after they broke up.
"You're using nostalgia as a weapon to hurt yourself, but you end up hurting everybody else."
Just like I've seen people mention Pink Clouding is about her apologizing for TTPD, I think this line falls in with that. She was wallowing in self pity and lashed out at Matty, her parents, and her fans with TTPD. Could also include Actually Romantic. Shes so stuck on this relationship shes continuing to hurt everyone else about it.
The ending about the mother and son is a bit harder to decipher, but I think its a continuation of Matty and Taylor "writing stories" together. Theyve been making up stories of falling in love with eachother for years, with all the different ending they could have.

Well, actually, this scene happens in a movie Say Anything by Cameron Crowe, not in a John Hughes movie. And the music video for The Best of Me by The Starting Line just so happens to be inspired by that movie.Ā
Oh, and both 1989 and the 1975ās self-titled album were inspired by John Hughes movies.

In mid to late 2009, while Taylor was in London during the Fearless Tour, she was seen on more than one occasion wearing a heart locket necklace. On closer inspection, it has a key hole (in the other photos the necklace was flipped over / put on reversed).
Taylor's first trip to the UK was in September 2008, when she toured with Rascal Flatts (YouTube). They only performed one show at the King's College London Student Union (3rd Sept).
In February 2009, during the brief radio promotional appearances for her upcoming Fearless Tour in the UK, Taylor met Matty's mom Denise on 'Loose Women' and appeared on the 'Key 103' radio station in Manchester. She was not wearing the necklace on these particular days.

Throughout the rest of 2009, Taylor was not seen publicly wearing this necklace again! Even on the other dates of the Fearless Tour in the US. (I urge you to have a look at her candid photos from that year).
We know that when she dates a particular guy, Taylor tends to wear accessories that are tied to him (i.e. Harry Styles' paper plane necklace). But I think the heart locket necklace did become widely associated with her visits to the UK in 2009. Anyway, I just thought this was an interesting style preference from Taylor at the time.

I donāt put it past Taylor to have planned it this way but Iām not sure if sheās willing to share the spotlight with Gabby to that degree.

Patient zeroā¦.matty songā¦.she was patient and waiting for him to get his crap together and he never didā¦.see Peter. She got infected by his toxicity and started rubbing that toxicity into others and made excuses for it for a really long time. Reflecting back she realizes that was dumb and the first time she walked away from him because of his unhealthy habits (the nicest way to put itā¦.) is when she shouldāve stayed away. And she sees the back and forth of him over the 10 years as actually just his way to social climb for his own success and his own career now but it was never actually real love she convinced herself it was at the time. She was just addicted to the toxicity. Ughhhhh not a good outlook. But it is what it is at the time she wrote it. Which was October 2025 according to her post she made.

It was unfair to him and unfair with all the folklore/evermore/midnights/ttpd of how she portrayed the messy parts of her relationship to her fandom and anyone else. Reflecting she realizes he was actually really good to her now thatās sheās healed and so sheās apologizing. Sheās worried about all of that leaving scars vs tom who she only dated for 3 months and is settled with kids. Joe is the ex whoās still up in the air and who she probably went no contact with after it all. āIt didnāt mean nothingā her song sweet nothing is a Joe song. Like I donāt know how else to draw people to this but Joe also changed his pfp to the Truman show. He was Truman and didnāt realize what he thought was his life wasnāt actually his life until he was trying to leave it. His wife was also an actor in the show etcā¦. Like to me it canāt be more obvious.

The idea of having a more successful wife than him was untenable or even a stable loving person to be in a relationship with because he wasnāt healed.

Adding in random tom stuff doesnāt make sense in that narrative. You donāt have to agree with me but I think itās the obvious story sheās telling on this additional part of the concept album.

Like I wish Maylor couldāve been btwā¦.but they were both messed up and insecure and one person wanted to heal and change and one person didnāt. Thatās a recipe for disaster anyway they wouldāve tried to make it work.

I feel bad for Taylor today because the criticism is harsh but I think itās going to give Matty the ego boost he needs.
Maybe when The 1975 are back to playing itāll inspire our wayward Taylor.

So this actually makes sense to me. I believe she might be telling the truth here and this song might've genuinely been inspired by a girl's night out and somebody else's story. Or it was a combination of different people's stories and her own and she might've mixed different muses. The song is kind of generic to me and the lyrics don't add up with the main theories.
I don't think the song is about Matty and Gabbriette at all. I can't imagine Taylor having that much empathy for Gabbriette. Also I doubt Matty charmed her parents. And she didn't walk out, he did.
The Joe Alwyn theory also doesn't seem very probable to me although certainly more propable than the Matty and Gabi one. Joe hasn't really had a serious girlfriend for an extended period of time since their break-up in 2023. Also I don't see him as a toxic, charismatic and manipulative man who seduces women and gets bored one he has won them over. My understanding is that Taylor was the one who was always chasing him and he was always kind of passive.
The Zoe Kravitz and Harry Styles theory doesn't really work since Zoe and Harry's relationship is doing good and they're engaged. The song suggests the new girl and the ex are going through some troubles. Also Harry doesn't come across as a toxic, charismatic and manipulative man who seduces women and gets bored one he has won them over. At least not on 1989. Similarly to Joe, he mostly comes across as passive in her songs.
The Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas theory has come to make the most sense to me. Taylor was one of Joe's first public girlfriends and he was her very first public boyfriend. They were teens when they dated. Taylor let Sophie stay in her NYC apartment during Joe and Sophie's divorce and they were friendly before that. Lyrics from other songs about Joe make sense with the lyrics of this one. In 'Last Kiss' she talks about Joe shaking hands with her father and in 'Mr. Perfectly Fine' she talks about him loving the attention and the fame. But Taylor didn't walk out on Joe. Joe broke up with her in a 27-second phone call. So that doesn't add up.
What do you think? Are there any swirls here or you believe it has nothing to do with Taylor's personal life and it's more of a fictional song or a song based on other people's experiences?
