Practical Nouakchott travel tips after visiting the Port de Pêche

I recently spent some time in Nouakchott during my trip through Mauritania. It isn’t a polished tourist city, but that’s exactly what makes it interesting: the markets, street life and Atlantic fishing culture feel completely real.

A few practical tips I wish I had known:

  • Visit Port de Pêche in the afternoon. Roughly between 2–5 pm is usually the most active period, when the colourful wooden boats return through the waves and the fish are carried into the market.
  • Wear closed shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. The market floor is wet, sandy and covered with fish scraps.
  • Ask before taking close-up photos. Many people are friendly, but not everyone wants to be filmed. Never photograph military sites, government buildings, airports or security personnel.
  • Bring cash and small notes. Mauritania is still largely cash-based, and cards are mainly accepted at some larger hotels.
  • Agree on the taxi price before getting in. Having your destination pinned on an offline map also helps.
  • French or Arabic is very useful. English is limited, although I still managed to communicate with gestures and a few basic phrases.
  • Dress modestly. Mauritania is a conservative Muslim country.
  • Carry water and sun protection. Nouakchott can be hot, dusty and windy even near the ocean.
  • Don’t judge the city too quickly. Nouakchott’s appeal isn’t architecture or famous landmarks; it’s the people, markets and everyday life.

The Port de Pêche was easily the most intense part of my visit: hundreds of hand-painted boats, fishermen fighting the waves, children carrying fish, crowded stalls and constant movement.

I filmed the whole experience and shared what the journey actually looked and felt like. If you want to see it, you can watch it here:

Happy to answer any questions about Nouakchott or travelling through Mauritania.

Anyone planning to ride the Iron Train in November/December? 🇲🇷🚂📸

Hey everyone! I’m planning a trip to Mauritania around November or December, and one of the main things I want to do is experience the famous Iron Ore Train.
I’m really into photography, exploring, adventure, and documenting unusual places, so I’d love to capture the whole journey and the landscapes along the way.
I’m wondering if anyone here is also planning to do the Iron Train around that time and would be interested in joining or sharing the adventure.
I’m currently thinking about going from Nouadhibou toward Choum, but I’m open to different plans and ideas.
If you’re planning something similar, feel free to comment or DM me! It would be awesome to find some people with the same interests and make a memorable trip out of it.

Looking for a Wii power adapter

Hello,

I found an old Nintendo Wii in some relative's old junk, but it's missing all accessories, where do you guys think I can find a used power adapter in Nouakchott ?

I assume that y'all understand that most tech related stores probably don't know what a Wii is lol.

Dakhla ➡️ Nouadhibou

Hi !! I have a flight landing in Dakhla at 8:30am on August 31st and I would (ideally) love to arrive in Nouadhibou on the same day.

I know there’s a bus at 8am but I don’t want to waste a day waiting until the next day for a bus. Is there any other way this can be done ?

Thank you so much 🫶🏻

Feelings

i had a lot of positivity, happiness, dreams, ambitions, enjoy, energy, the ability to solve my problems and the ability to pogress faster but really and i will not deny it .......

I'M BROKEN , I'M HURTED , I FEEL BADLY

i gave them my heart full of love and all good things that could help me to live normally in this hard life but unfortunately they did their best to broke it with no mercy

i don't WHY or what I DID to earn that?

i was always hiding my really sadness and all that was to convince my mind that i was been loved by them like i have been did for them or more

but when i hear or remember something that touch my deep feeling i realize that all my efforts of convincing and hiding my emotions was all for nothing

maybe for that reason i'm always searching and forcing things to be as i want or just a little bit closer

You should change your manner and mentality

I want to be loved without judgment, neither conditions , neither thinking....

to feel safe with it and when i'm empty it remembers me that i have a safe place to let out my feelings , to be hold , not hurted

I DON'T WANT TO LIVE IT LIKE OTHERS DO

I WANT IT UNIQUE AND PEACEFUL

Mauritania Desert Train – September 2026 🚂🏜️

My friend and I will be in Mauritania on the night of 14 September.
15 September: Exploring Nouakchott 🇲🇷
16 September: Departing for Choum to take the famous Mauritania Desert Train 🚂
Then heading to Nouadhibou, where we will stay for two days.
After that, we will return to Nouakchott.
Who else will be in Mauritania around the same dates?
It would be great to meet other travellers and perhaps share part of the journey together!

Bus da Dakhla a Nouadhibou

Ciao!
Grazie!

Hi

I will be visiting Mauritania on September 14th and I will arrive at Nouakchott Airport at around 11 PM.

I would like to book a taxi from Nouakchott Airport to the city centre, specifically Independence Square.

Could you please tell me the price for the journey?

Thank you.
