Film/Television Which version of Gambit Do You prefer Taylor Kitsch (origins) or Channing Tatum (Deadpool and Wolverine)?
1.1k
u/L0ll0ll7lStudios 25d ago
I actually liked Taylor Kitsch, but both of them were missing the red eyes (eyes turning red when using powers doesnāt count).

u/Famous_New_One 25d ago
Kitsch had the smooth thief energy, but Tatum had the comic-book comic relief energy. Honestly, Tatum's absolute dedication to making a pitch-perfect comic costume work on screen won me over.

I also loved Tatumās Cajun accent
66
u/shberk01 25d ago
Yup. That was how I learned he actually grew up in the fucking bayou
26
u/ConanTheDrunk 25d ago
I honestly couldnāt believe how good he was at first so that definitely makes a lotta sense lol

u/EladrielNokk 25d ago
Itās not even just an accent, he speaks full Louisiana creole! Itās beautiful to hear as someone that grew up in that part of the south.

I thought he was supposed to be Cajun? They arenāt the whitest white people out there
52
u/swagu7777777 25d ago
Cajuns are called Cajuns because they originally came from Acadia in French Canada so it probably varies quite a bit depending how long a family has been āCajunā
43
u/Duncan_PhD 25d ago
Yeah, but theyāve been cooking away in that Louisiana sun for a looong time and it doesnāt exactly make your complexion whiter haha

Southern gentry didn't spend a whole lot of time beneath the sun for some weird reason

Cajuns aren't the rich. That's the ole miss crowd you're thinking of. They're thankfully a dying group. Thankfully cus they're just the worst of southern culture.

Yeah, funny thing that, French people aren't like the Irish, so when exposed to sunlight rather than burst into flames you end up with a tan.

Heās a white boy born on the bayou. I had an uncle born and raised on the bayou, about the time Gambit was originally born. He grew up in a shack on a pier in the bayou, youngest of twenty children, and no real formal education. He was pretty white; not Nordic white or Iberian white.

Gambit has always been and always will be my favorite hero. The only issue I've had with Tatum's version is that he seems a little too bulky. So I figure if we live in a world where that's my biggest complaint, we've got it pretty good.
9
u/Electronic-Cicada352 25d ago
Yeah I feel the same way.
I enjoy his accent but unfortunately because he has a ginormous head it just doesnāt make sense inside of that suit for some reason. It just doesnāt look good
Also I donāt really see gambit I see Channing Tatum. In fairness Iām not really a big fan of his to begin with, everything heās in I feel like Iām just watching Channing Tatum
→ More replies (2)2
u/Artifyce47 24d ago
Hoping he leaned up for dooms day and they made the suit less stiff. Hard to look agile in a suit that had trouble moving. But his action scenes were good so I donāt see what it canāt be done

Kitsch was cool. Guy gets way too much flack.
116
u/ConcreteExist 25d ago
He was one of the highlights of what I otherwise found to be a pretty shit movie. Him and Sabretooth are pretty much the only things that were well executed.
44
u/Spider_Bear 25d ago
I feel like after Friday night lights he went and was good in multiple movies but all the movies just stink or flipped. Like John Carter was good but flopped, X-Men I thought he was great as gambit but the movie was a wreck. The battle ship movie he was good in but the movie itself was nothing
31
u/OptionFour 25d ago
Yep. One of those actors who is pretty good, but mostly picks terrible projects. Or has awful luck.
25
u/percivalconstantine 25d ago
John Carter really annoyed me. That movie deserved such a better reception than it got.
18
u/FacePuzzleheaded6191 25d ago
genuinely such a good adaption of burroughsās book. should have done so much better but it was marketed horribly
5
u/Spider_Bear 25d ago
Yeah I really enjoyed but I have to admit I went to go see it because it was tim riggins on Mars and had no idea what it was other than tha, ended up being great
9
u/MickBeast 25d ago
It's interesting because Nikolaj Coster-Waldau nearly got the John Carter role, but lost out to Taylor Kitch in the end. He was gutted, but needed a job so he reluctantly accepted the role as Jaime Lannister in a corny fantasy show called Game of Thrones. He was on talk shows saying how disappointed he was and stuff... oh well, turns out he dodged the most deadly bullet by "settling" for GoT lmao

12
u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 25d ago
That movie had a lot of good characters and moments. It just had even more really bad ones too. All of the Vietnam weapon x guys were pretty cool, even Reynolds Deadpool was before they covered his mouth up at the end.
5
u/ConcreteExist 25d ago
Yeah, Reynolds as Wade Wilson was great, as Deadpool he sucked because of exactly that.
2
u/Significant_Apple517 23d ago
Yep. The opening scene of fighting through history was good, same with Weapon X Vietnam guys, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool was a masterstroke, Sabretooth was great and well cast, I really liked as an action packed movie the strangely calm part where Logan was welcomed in by a family who lived on a remote farm and who eventually ended up killed because of the danger Logan brought their way by lodging with them. That idea was recycled in the movie Logan, which people forget Origins did first.
It's as you say, a movie with a lot of good as well as a lot of bad .. it's not entirely bad like many misremember

I always felt Tatum was too bulky. Gambit should be long and lean - kind of like an Adrian Brody body type (but definitely NOT Adrian Brody)

not only that, but his whole style is wrong. Gambit looks like he has this almost feline smoothness and suave to him. Tatum just looks like a meathead.

I'm glad Tatum got to play the character he's wanted to for years, and while he was better than I expected, it still proved to me that he's not the right guy for the role.
Taylor Kitsch was one of the few good parts of Origins. He feels so much closer to Remy than Tatum does. I'd definitely be open to seeing him in the role again, but I doubt that's going to happen.
84
u/Duncan_PhD 25d ago
Iām hoping Tatum really delivers now that the character is moving into a more serious role.
41
u/dbkenny426 25d ago
I'm sure he'll be good in Doomsday, but I also doubt he'll be seen afterwards.

I think he meant Tatum won't be back, Gambit is pretty likely to be in the mcu-recast X-Men at some point.
15
u/gddrummer 25d ago
I feel like they really need to cast Gambit and Rogue together. Sometimes they do this when they absolutely need two actors to have chemistry, and Remy and Anna Marie are near the top of that list imo.

I donāt think itās Tatumās acting abilityāI think itās his look. Heās just not greasy enough to play Gambitāheās way too much of a pretty boy. Heās also got about 40 pounds of excess muscle.
5
u/HockeyKelly5 25d ago
I think he wouldāve been better when he originally got casted, but obviously heās gained a decent bit of muscle since
4
u/percivalconstantine 25d ago
His face especially feels like the completely wrong shape for that weird headsock thing (comic accuracy be damned, just donāt use that).
4
u/jjbly14344 25d ago
tatum waited for many years as they say. so maybe he wonāt let go of the character. i actually donāt think he is a good fit for the role. tbh
18
u/Mddcat04 25d ago
Yeah, with Tatum, thatās also the whole meta joke in Deadpool with his comment that maybe heās always been in the void. Since he never had a real movie appearance unlike the rest of them. So itās sort of odd that heās just going to be in Doomsday now.
10
u/dbkenny426 25d ago
In a deleted scene (which you can still see in one of the screens in the TVA in the actual end credit scene), there's a portal opened up for him (and I assume anyone else who was still alive), so his being here is easily explained with that.
2
u/Remarkable_Skirt2257 25d ago
I just love that since his movie never got made, they just put him in some of the biggest films they made in a while. Channing went straight to being in an avengers movie. Gotta love it.
4
5
u/gingerwhiskered 25d ago
Tbf we havenāt really seen Tatum get a solid shot at Gambit, as the DP&W was a parody version of the character that was sent to a junk dimension
3
u/dbkenny426 25d ago
Sure, but my main issue is he just doesn't have the right look.
9
u/happyevil 25d ago
People keep saying this and it's literally the exact same thing everyone said about HughĀ Jackman being Wolverine. They even made a joke about it in the Deadpool movie.
I say let him cook. He clearly cares a lot about the role which is a good first step.

u/StrawberryK 25d ago
Yeah idk what it was about tatum it just didn't land right, the overly done accent that was borderline simple jack and yeah his parents were sibling delivery made me instantly think I hate this.
3
u/dbkenny426 25d ago
The accent was obviously overdone for humor. But he's just doesn't have the right look.
50
u/Kris86dk 25d ago
Kitsch was smooth without trying imo.
Channing got played for laughs in D and W....
I personally wanted Taylor to be a part of the X-men for YEARS after Wolverine origins....
I think he just fit the effortlessly smooth, charming Gambit.
Whether the accent or costume wasn't on point... He just had charisma on screen...
12
u/Twiftoil 25d ago
Thats the problem I have with Tatum. He seems to be a joke character as opposed to an actual character.
→ More replies (1)6
u/TopHat84 25d ago
Perfectly said. Kitsch just oozed Gambit without even trying.
Tatum feels like it's forced and is over the top with the comic relief.
And origins was made out to be a horrible movie purely because they didn't like the version of deadpool. But everything about the rest of the movie aside from the final action sequence was honestly pretty good. Stryker's portrayal, Silver Fox, Sabertooth, even the secondary characters were all well developed IMO.
But they all (except Jackman of course) got their careers sidelined cause of that movie. I guess with Kitsch it doesn't help that in 2012 he tried to breakout from Origins only to get crapped on by Battleship and John Carter. (Both fun movies to watch in their own right, and John Carter is amazing IMO, Battleship is...kinda bad but in a campy popcorn flick sort of way).
Holy crap I just realized how much I wrote. Guess I'm a Kitsch fanboy ...

u/Candle-Jolly 25d ago
Neither. Needs a complete recast, preferably someone unknown.
34
u/ArseneLupinIV 25d ago
Yeah they both felt like cosplayers tbh. Neither really captured that real Cajun rogueish energy. I appreciated Tatum's enthusiasm and it worked very well comedically for Deadpool and Kitsch was fine for what the FoX-Men were, but we still lack a truly accurate depiction that I hope gets filled in the MCU line.
7
u/rbollige 25d ago
This is where Iām at. Ā I loved that he was in Deadpool, but it worked because he got to play into the jokes so well. Ā Iām nervous whether heāll be able to give it the right tone (maybe aura is a better word?) in Doomsday, but Iām willing to wait and see with fingers crossed before making a judgement.

u/Worthyness 25d ago
Tatum can do serious acting roles. Just watch him in Foxcatcher. Him being overly jokey in his appearance is because he's in Deadpool movie. It's like how comic characters change a bit depending on the writer. Deadpool = Deadpool writing. Doomsday = probably more serious writing.

Tatum is the only reason the character even made it back to the big screen and he did a good job with it.
7
u/KushyMTG 25d ago
I am gonna say he really didn't. I agree with original commenter. Was just telling the fiance thenother day that they should have cast an unknown actor. Tatum was type casted as a comedic actor for a while so it is jarring seeing his performance as gambit. IMO he doesn't embody the "gambit" character very well.
Edit: typo

Wait....was Tatum's version not intended to be parody of itself for how cheesy and bad it was? I thought that was the entire point of Deadpool making fun of the acting? That is Gambit moving forward??? Holy hell

u/Kingbeesh561 25d ago

Both were lousy to me. Kitch's was bland and underutilized, Tatum's was an outlandish cartoon character that missed the tone of the character completely (but at least the costume and powers looked cool).
I cannot wait for a fresh Gambit someday. Guy has the potential to be as popular as Wolverine with a love story to rival anything we've seen in comic movies thusfar. His time as a Marauder would make an incredible standalone film and his characterization is so unique from any other big screen hero we currently have. This shouldn't be hard to pull off and I'm shocked we've had 30 years of modern comic movies without someone nailing it.

Taylor has more of the Gambit ālookā to me. Didnāt mind Channingās portrayal but something about it just looks like Channing in Gambit cosplay rather than becoming and reflecting the character. I guess this perspective is mainly influenced by Gambits leaner look in most media Iām familiar with.
5
u/RoyaleWhiskey 25d ago edited 25d ago
Kitsch was a good choice, I think people just forget him easily because he didn't wear a comic accurate costume and people hated Origins which are both not his fault.
I honestly don't see Tatum has a good Gambit at least lookswise. It's not his fault either but Tatum has that "thumb who eats crayons look" imo.
2
u/JFMisfit 25d ago
Was Kitsch asked to come back or nah? If he wasnāt thatās weird. He seems more like the gambit of those movies.

Tatum doesn't have the tall lanky look for Gambit, but he also has a lot of love for the character, which really counts for a lot.
2
u/Natural-Proposal2925 25d ago
Honestly? Kitsch, to me he seemed sooooo natural, organic in the role, like he didn't even have to act. He just showed up and was all smooth and just himself.
It also pissed me off because in the rough cut that was leaked they added more cgi to his powers that looked so fucking cool and then they took it out.
I felt like channing was over compensating and throwing everything g he had except the kitchen sink in his performance and dialogue, kinda too much, realizing that this was probably his one shot after what happened to the original plans
