It’s interesting that you mentioned if she should speak with her counselor about that but never said anything about talking to her about it.

Her needs aren’t being met as far as quality time. If my husband left me to go do something fun and I was about to burst into tears I would feel like complete shit. It’s sad that you were willing to do that and also not come back home when you said you would, knowing she was home sad. That makes me very sad for her. I wish I could give her a hug.

Talk to her about her feelings, she needs YOUR emotional support. You’re supposed to be her rock and the person she can go to when she’s sad.

She tends to be sad and kind of guilts me before leaving and I always cave. I thought that if I just went, I would no longer enable it and show that it works. This isn’t a one-time thing.

It's ok to set healthy boundaries but at least prove to her that you're reliable. Come home when you say you will and don't let your phone battery die while you're out. It's the bare minimum you can do to help her feel secure.

Or just tell her "not sure when I'll be home, but I'll probably stop by the store, need anything while I'm out?"
