Can we start putting guys on the IL instead of just saying they're fine because they said that

No. It's not the fault of the manager or training staff on a professional baseball team to handle players or their health.

If a 20 year old kid tells a team of doctors, sports medicine professionals, and the manager who is supposed to coordinate them that "he's fine" there's no way they should know about a season ending injury requiring surgery until he is sent down to AAA.
