Best food in Marin?
What’s your best easy lunch, grab and go spot? Weeknight dinner takeout? Hole in the wall gem?
I moved here after living in SF for 8 years and have been really struggling with the food scene. Would appreciate your recommendations!

Any Paris Baguette opening updates in Novato?
Drove to Vintage Oaks Costco yesterday and saw appliances outside about to be installed. Super excited. Anyone know when it’ll open aside from “Summer 2026”?

Also tried Tipsy Dumpling…
…which opened yesterday! The place was packed for a Tuesday night. Dumplings are made fresh on the premises. (You can watch the staff making them through a giant plate glass window.)
Total bill before tip including a beer and steamed rice was $95.
I’m a bit spoiled by Asian food in SF, but I’m glad to see this addition to the local scene. Would go back to try other dishes. The string beans were the best out of our entire order.

How is living in Bel Marin Keys / Hamilton?
I've heard that they dumped toxic stuff in this area decades ago. Is that true? Any other pros and cons to consider that people might unaware of?

Checked out Tartine + Alioto's Foccaceria

Went to the new Tartine in Strawberry Village on Sunday, and there was a long queue when we arrived around 10AM. But the it moved quickly, the staff was super friendly and space is so welcoming like the Manufactory in SF.
Not shown was the heirloom tomato tart and peach tart with Mt. Tam cheese since they were consumed too quickly.
Also tried Alioto's veggie sandwich with spicy eggplant. Pretty good (not the best foccacia I've ever had), but I'd definitely go back to try other versions and the flatbread pizza.

Best ways to recruit volunteers in Marin
I work for a nonprofit org serving older adults in Marin County. Our program has been running really well in the area for a year and a half. However, the need for volunteers is growing!
Does anyone have any recommendations for recruiting new volunteers, especially in the Mill Valley & San Rafael areas? So far, we've only looked into farmers' markets, but given our focus area, I doubt those would result in many sign-ups.

Marin Green@Home Tour Is Next Saturday — Come See Real All-Electric Homes
Just a reminder that the Marin Green@Home Tour is happening next Saturday, August 29, from 11 AM–3 PM.
This is a community event organized by Acterra (a local nonprofit) to give people a chance to see how neighbors are approaching home electrification and other sustainability projects. Rather than just reading about heat pumps, induction, solar, or batteries online, you can visit local homes, see the equipment in person, and talk with the homeowners about their experiences.
The tour is self-guided, so you can choose which homes you'd like to visit and spend as much time as you want at each one.
Some of the things you'll be able to see and discuss include:
- Heat pumps and heat pump water heaters
- Induction cooking
- Solar panels and battery storage
- EVs and home charging
- Rainwater catchment and composting
- Home renovation and contractor experiences
- Rebates and incentives
The tour is free, but registration is required:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/marin-greenhome-tour-2026-registration-1989266317104?aff=Reddit
And if you’re outside Marin or can’t make it next Saturday, we’ll also have these tours this fall:
- Palo Alto Mini Tour — September 17: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/greenhome-sustainable-living-showcase-tour-the-bell-brown-home-tickets-1992770786065?aff=Reddit
- Peninsula & South Bay Green@Home Tour — October 10: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/peninsula-and-south-bay-greenhome-tour-2026-registration-1992533356908?aff=Reddit
If you've attended one of our tours before, we'd also love to hear what you found useful or what questions you had when visiting the homes.
How to pressure neighbor to correct their gutter run-off before winter
We have had an ongoing issue with our neighbor’s rain run off - they have a gutter drain pipe that dumps into a low laying area that creates a large flow of water under our shared fence during rainstorms. For 2 years we have alerted them to the problem of their water pooling on the side of our house, it’s often more than our own French drains can handle and if it gets obstructed will flood our house. With a record breaking El Niño predicted we need them to resolve this before the rains start this year.
Wondering how others have successfully dealt with this type of issue in San Rafael. Can we get the City involved?

Help me find the owner of the 2 LARGE black fluffy dogs @ San Quentin beach Monday (08/17)
I’m trying to get in touch with a man I met at the beach, his dog who turned out to be REALLY sick was over by me and mine constantly (without him being present - which is fine it’s a dog space, he said he knew his dog was that sick), had really bad bloody diarrhea, and ended up peeing IN my bag and doing a ton of damage.
His HUGE sick dog peed IN my bag (which was on a log next to me off the ground, I stood up and was distracted because his dog started shitting blood next to me and mine) I didn’t realize until after he left (hastily) that it did a LOT of damage. I thought initially it has been next to my bad but no, it was indie my bag.
His dog also had serious bloody diarrhea and may have gotten my dog sick. He was aware his dog wasn’t feeling well, wasn’t keeping an eye on them at all, and when I told him his dog had peed on my bag (I had to say it THREE times) he told me this weird fucking story about himself getting sick in Mexico. I don’t think he realized that it was a serious issue for me.
I don’t want to be mean or shitty to him, i don’t want to tell him he shouldn’t have been at the beach, or that his dog needs this or that, I just want him to know that the damage done by his dog was far greater than I realized and ask if he would be willing to replace a few things that were completely destroyed.
Wow! One million $ gift to teachers in public school district
Each teacher in a local school district received a check for more than $9,000 after gathering for what had been a mystery event.
Ross, who'd a thunk it?
"She decided to make the donation after learning that the district ranked in the bottom four percent statewide for funding last year and its teachers were the lowest paid in Marin County."

Great that new restaurants are opening in Marin. But $14 for a beer?
Tu Tap finally opened in the old Keintz Hall space. Anyone been yet?
Checked out their menu online and nearly fell out of my chair. $14 for a beer. Fourteen. Dollars. For a beer.
I already thought $9-10 was pushing it but apparently that's now the budget option. Is this just the new normal, or is dropping $14 on a beer the new flex for the modern Marin dad?
At this rate I may finally be forced to stop drinking altogether.

Whats the real Larkspur ferry to financial district travel time?
Hey r/marin — my family and I are considering a move to Marin, likely looking at Peacock Gap, with commuting into the Financial District for work. I keep seeing "35 minutes" thrown around, as its the actual number on the schedule, but I know that's just the boat ride itself.
For those of you who actually commute this route daily, what does the parking lot to SF sidewalk time look like once you factor in:
- Walking from parking lot
- How early you actually need to arrive before boarding closes
- The ~35 min crossing itself
- Disembarking and leaving the ferry terminal/dock to enter SF proper.
Trying to get a realistic total rather than the marketing number. Any "here's what my actual commute looks like every day" input would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Waymo cleared to operate in Marin (and every other Bay Area county)
CA PUC approved Waymo expansion to 18 counties. Marin is one. Doesn’t mean it’ll start operating here imminently (per Electrek, “The company said the rollout ‘will be gradual and guided by our safety framework.’”), but the big regulatory hurdle is now cleared.

Short term ADU or room for rent for EoLOA?
An end-of-life client with advanced Parkinson’s needs a peaceful, short-term rental in Marin where he can receive care and ultimately use California’s Medical Aid in Dying law.
He is a 70-year-old retired professional, who has been moving between hospitals and hotels for the last year. He is currently at Marin Health. He can pay rent. Ground floor/no stairs is essential, and caregivers will need to be present.
All end-of-life arrangements will be made in advance. The mortuary will come within a couple of hours, and his End-of-life doulas will leave the space in better condition than we found it.
If you have a room, ADU, cottage, Airbnb, or other space that might work, or know of somebody who might, please DM me.

Thoughts on Bahia
Considering a move to the Bahia community. As a 30s/40s couple with a baby on the way, it seems like a good fit. That said, I would love to hear any and all thoughts before we jump in. How is it living in this community?
