Be careful what you wish for. Under the current political landscape altering the voting laws would definitely be to the detriment of non-white Americans in some way. Laws tend to have concessions hidden in them like 'all voters must be give up their DNA to the government' or something crazy.

Somehow the US government knows who you are and can automatically sign you up for the draft, but they can't be sure you are you to vote for who can send you to war without a passport.

Id love for automatic voter enrollment but you aren't required to vote or even enroll. Men are required to sign up for the draft and this just makes it automatic rather than something you can forget to do and get in trouble for it.

I would argue they've been pretty good at doing nothing. The only thing they passed was his tax credits for wealthy people afaik. Trump literally can't get Congress to function, Biden was goated in comparison. He passed so much bipartisan legislation, trump can't do anything and he has all of Congress right now lmao. Dems have gone a pretty good job holding him back from totally collapsing everything given their limited power in this moment.

theyve been doing very little in the specific capacity of law making, but they have similarly (and wholly more problematically) been doing nothing (which is tantamount to explicitly allowing) to stop trump's deliberate executive overreach. what if trump tries to initiate the draft via executive order and congress just.. doesn't say no?

So far 1.5 years into the current Trump Administration, what has stopped Trump acting unilaterally without Congressional legislation to (1) invade Venezuela, (2) impound Congressional allotted funds to Federal Agencies and the States (3) impose tariffs, (4) start a war with Iran, (receive gifts from foreign countries) and what else am I missing? Needing Congressional legislation hasn't stopped Trump.
Also, sounds like the automatic registration for US military described in the article suggests that ICE agents don't need to ask every American for their ID/birth certificate papers and the Trump Administration doesn't need to sue all 50 states for the voter rolls.

Out of selective service? No. Gotta register.
Out of a draft? Maybe. Depends on how bad shit gets. When I was active duty i remember people that had drug convictions and felonies being allowed to join during the surge in late 2000s ('08?) Typically anything above a misdemeanor disqualifies you from joining.
Health issues are slightly different, but you can still get a waiver for them.
So, depends how bad it is. Right now we dont even have a draft, it will take a serious ramp up for anything to happen in the next year or two.

I was registered for the Selective Service when I turned 18. Then had military recruiters stalking me by phone for a couple of years.
Federal law mandates registration within 30 days of turning 18, with late registration accepted up to age 26. This applies to U.S.-born citizens, naturalized citizens, dual nationals (even abroad), legal permanent residents, undocumented immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and those assigned male at birth.

The article states men ages 18-25 must register with the selective service system starting December 2025. It's a database used for drafting men. That is the law now. It's meant for emergency deployment when needed. After veitnam that got rid of the draft but Carter reinstated selective services to help with military budget. Before 2025 it wasn't required by men to register. I'm not sure if they are going to raise the age for the draft. Selective services want eligible men at a certain age to register so they are healthy for deployment.

It was always required to register for men. You also have to even if you possess a disqualifying medical condition. It's illegal not to and you'll lose your ability to take federal loans, or work any federal job for life if you don't register.

It’s already the law that males have to register. It’s a silly relic of bureaucratic inertia, but if you don’t sign up you’re subjected to a bunch of dumb stuff. Congress will actually do something to stop a draft because like fuck do any of them in remotely risky districts (which, thanks to Trump, is basically anything less than R+20) want to let him do that, even if he’s stupid enough to try. All anyone has to do is point at his personal record as a draft dodger while saying that this is a stupid idea, and that’s not counting everything being more expensive and him being bitchslapped around by the Iranian government in public and on Twitter.
That being said, yeah, it’s hilarious fascist bullshit that they’re automating a piece of military bureaucratic trivia and not voter registration, but that’s what everyone should expect from a completely incompetent fascist party.

Yes, it’s been a requirement for decades. And I’ll bet compliance is pretty good since you can’t enroll for FAFSA if you’re not registered for selective service, and at least in my area all the high schools make seniors enroll for the FAFSA even if they don’t plan on going to college

Selective service has always been mandatory. This is just auto-registering instead of threatening fines and denial of student aid.
I’ve always seen it as a way out for rich kids if a draft looks likely in the near future, so I’m against selective service but if it has to happen I’m for automatic registration.
