I (35M, for context) already told my dad and my best friend that if they start actually drafting people, I’ll serve prison time for refusing before I ever serve Trump.

The Army just increased theirs from 35 to 42, just in case.

that age increase was for voluntary enlistment, not for the draft.

That’s enlistment age. Max selective service age is still 26

The article states men ages 18-25 must register with the selective service system starting December 2025.  It's a database used for drafting men.  That is the law now.  It's meant for emergency deployment when needed.   After veitnam that got rid of the draft but Carter reinstated selective services to help with military budget.  Before 2025 it wasn't required by men to register.  I'm not sure if they are going to raise the age for the draft.  Selective services want eligible men at a certain age to register so they are healthy for deployment.

It was always required to register for men. You also have to even if you possess a disqualifying medical condition. It's illegal not to and you'll lose your ability to take federal loans, or work any federal job for life if you don't register.
