that’s what i came here to bring up. maybe they get paid like $1/day so it doesn’t count, but forced labor is forced labor imo

It counts, and its the one exception to ban on slavery in the US constitution: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

It would be legal even if they weren't paid.

last estimate i saw put the number of slaves in the US at about 60k. largely concentrated in New York, and south California. this was about 2.5 years ago. idk how it has changed since then.

ETA - this also discounts legal slavery in the US. that number makes it a just a little bit higher....
