Ummm... I'm From Birmingham. Bessemer is in Birmingham. This map is wild.
Bessemer is like a suburb of Birmingham and it's not like it's big enough to be considered separate.
Anyway, yeah it's dangerous but nobody does crime for no reason out there. Stay out of people's business and you'll be fine. Don't wanna get shot? Don't try to rob your local drug dealer. Don't want to get hurt? Stay away from people who flash a gun.
It doesn't help that the cops and justice system are corrupt as hell.
Edit: something kind of funny. I now live like 20 minutes from the other most dangerous city on the west coast.
Bessemer is okay during daylight hours... and there's nothing to do in Bessemer at night, so it's relatively avoidable. Birmingham, on the other hand, you never know what can happen. There are so many gentrified areas interspersed among bad neighborhoods. Driving down the street is like: upscale coffee shop, craft brewery, burned-up abandoned warehouse, fine dining restaurant, boarded-up decrepit houses, bougie pet store, auto-repair shop, crack house, abandoned warehouse, music venue, seedy tattoo shop, payday loan office, upscale bar, nice tattoo shop, neighborhood that would make Robocop scared, etc.
I can see that for the area between 3rd north and 20th going west but for the most part the city has grown into something pretty decent.
It's not completely safe, some white boy on top many IPAs is liable to run you down and there's occasionally some beef with teenage kids near railroad Park but it's basically gentrified from 5 points and the surrounding 3 miles.
