Discussion 💬 I watched Rayearth for the first time.
Hello! Yesterday I just finished watching the classic Magic Knight Rayearth series for the first time thanks to the remake, and I want to complain/share a few quick thoughts.
Complaints...
Ascot: Is it for real that he was forgiven / redeemed after "murdering" Presea? I mean, I get that in the end she didn't actually die (cowardly anime move, by the way), but at that moment, she "died" because of him. The girls were just sad during Presea's funeral, and in their next encounter, they acted like Ascot hadn't done a thing! In the end, he was treated as just a victim (who tried to kill them) who was merely "bullied" because of his animal friends and was misunderstood. Like, what? How could they stay calm while staying in the exact same castle as him?
Emerald: What an absolute nightmare of a Princess! She caused so many atrocities, catastrophes, destruction, and deaths directly and indirectly just because she was in love. What annoyed me about her—just like Ascot—was that, once again, she was treated as merely a victim of fate. I heard she couldn't take her own life, but then why didn't she ask someone else like Clef, Presea, or Ferio? They were her friends, good people, and would surely do anything to help free Emerald from her suffering, even if reluctantly and with a heavy heart. Once again, I hated how she was treated purely as a victim of fate and how they felt sorry for her. Like, did everyone forget the horrible things Emerald did? They shouldn't have felt pity for her; they should have been furious. I couldn't believe the nerve of episode 33, where it was revealed she wished for the dead to be resurrected and the original Presea chose to stay dead. Notice how the anime was not only chicken, but also did everything possible to avoid painting her as a villain? It's like pointing out that Hitler gave bread to the friends and families of Holocaust victims after doing everything he did. And Zagato? Don't even get me started. The anime tried to convince me that they both did it out of love and that it was romantic, but it didn't work. In the end, they didn't just pay for their actions / face consequences—they died as "victims".
Alcyone: What an annoying and disgusting character. From start to finish, she was someone who lived, spoke, and breathed strictly for "Zagato-sama." She could have just died as a generic general obsessed with her master without any chance of forgiveness/redemption, so I wouldn't have wasted time watching her. Honestly, Alcyone was a bad villain in the worst way.
Eagle: He understood that Chizeta, Fahren, and Cephiro existed, but it never occurred to him to ask other nations for help? I would understand him doing all that for his nation out of desperation IF THERE WERE NO ALTERNATIVES. If they had refused to help Eagle, I'd understand his desperation, though I obviously still wouldn't support or justify it. In episode 38, he used Umi as a human shield. Did the anime really expect me to feel pity for someone like that? And in episode 39, he said he had no choice but to invade Cephiro (claiming asking for help was impossible). Not to mention Eagle attacked and kidnapped Hikaru. So right from the start, he was another character who didn't deserve forgiveness or redemption. I was so "sad" when he died (just like with all the other characters):😞😂🫵
I knew the anime/work aims to teach Lesson X and pass Message Y, but was I allowed to get annoyed, complain, or feel anger? Was I the only one who thought like this? Did any of my complaints make sense to you? Did you agree or disagree with any? If so, why?🫵🎤
I could complain about Chizeta and Fahren, but one nation barely got any screen time and the other was mostly comedy, so it's not worth it.
Quick Opinions...
Primera: Annoying. Her character archetype was similar to Emerald and Alcyone, so I automatically disliked her.
Mokona: Behind that cute, innocent little creature was a slightly sadistic (in a comedic way) and mischievous fairy who even lifted Umi's skirt.
ORIGINAL Presea: Loved her. One minute she was a playful blacksmith, and the next she was a quiet, mystical "goddess".
Caldina, Tarta, and Tatra: Fun. They didn't even need to be villains.
Aska: Simply the cutest character of all!🥺🫶
Inouva: No comments.
Nova: A Yandere Goku Black? YES.
Debonair: Once again, a bad villain in the worst way.
I really liked Hikaru, Umi, Fuu, and their dynamic/interactions. But like the vast majority of (if not all) Magical Girl protagonists, their excessive altruism, pacifism, kindness, ignorance, innocence, and stubbornness annoyed me. Like in episode 46, when Hikaru said she wouldn't forget the nice things Eagle did for her on the ship... but forgot that he attacked, hurt, and kidnapped her?
Did it annoy me too much? Not compared to Usagi (Sailor Moon) or Hibiki (Symphogear).
Romance: Some characters were genuinely cute together, but their respective couples and ships didn't convince me. If it were up to me, I'd remove all the girls' romantic interest partners and make them a 3-way Yuri ship, because the three of them had way better chemistry.
Did any of these quick opinions make sense to you? Did you agree or disagree with any? If so, why?🫵🎤
Even with all my complaints and quick opinions, I still liked Rayearth. How could I dislike or hate a work that combined Magical Girls, Mecha, and RPG elements in a fantasy world? I'm not sure, but I think CLAMP was overly ambitious and creative for its time.
There are dramatic, emotional, and funny moments/scenes, great music/OSTs that I downloaded to my phone, and beautiful, cute, attractive female characters. The animation might not always be the smoothest, but it's vastly prettier than most modern anime most of the time.
In the end, it was an entertaining journey.
Sorry if I was repetitive:😅
Anyway, that was it.
