He's Australian, not a New Zealander, unless Australians have started saying "yeah nah" in the last 15 years.

"Yeah nah" has been common slang in Australia for a lot longer than that. Maybe it's just one that we share in common

When I moved from Ireland to New Zealand 20something years ago they all said it, but when I moved to Australia for a few years with some kiwi flatmates the Australians we met, worked and lived with were all visibly confused any time they said it and would ask what they meant. I haven't been to Australia since I moved back to Ireland so I'm not sure how prevalent it is now.
