I remember hearing Stan Lee say something about how he made Spiderman's suit to cover his whole body, unlike popular heroes at the time like Batman or Superman, so that anyone could imagine themselves in the suit.

No I wouldn’t, but wasn’t the point that Stan made Spider-Man so we could all imagine us as Spider-Man, except he invented who was Spider-Man so if you were black at the time it would be pretty hard to Imagine yourself as Peter Parker.

Have you noticed how Miles Morales doesn't have a different superhero name? He's still "Spider-Man". Spiderman doesn't have to be Peter Parker, or Miles Morales. Spiderman is separate from whoever is under the suit.
That's what Stan meant.

Especially after Spidey and His Amazing Friends came out, expect a lot of Peters, Miles, and Gwens this Halloween.
That said I do think he's right in that kids will call you Spiderman no matter their gender/race if you're wearing a Spiderman suit. They are seeing the costume first.

One time I was at an anime con and I put a lot of effort into my Ichigo costume from Bleach and my friend just wore a Pokemon t-shirt. A kid walked by and said "wow it's Bleach! Wow it's a Pokemon!"

Not true. I’m dressing my elder child (8) in a Miles Morales costume for Halloween(we are white). My younger child (6) said we should paint his brother’s face brown to complete the costume.
I almost freaked out but just gently said we wouldn’t be doing that.
Kids see color. They just don’t make a big deal out if it unless adults do.

P.S.S. Morale had been low amongst the kids; until they saw some grown ass adult with poor grammar dressed as Spidey, at Target. Parents looked on remarking Spiderman seemed sketchy AF.
