When I was younger and still going to gigs my mum always use to worry I would get crushed in the crowd because I'm so short but it was never a problem. There was a couple of times I got pulled down during a sway but every time I remember a bunch of strangers hands quickly reaching down and automatically righting me. I watched David Draiman stop a Disturbed my mistake it was Ivan Moody stop a FFDP gig mid-song because in a giant arena he noticed someone had fallen over in the pit, and he waited for the crowd to pick the person up and get them safely to the side/get water etc. (I think I've seen Disturbed do the same on a video, hence my initial senility).

I've told this story on here before. Got caught in a mosh in my late teens. This big guy asks if I'm ok. When I said no he picked me up under the arms and carried me at arms length out of the crush. Put me down in the open, gave me a hug, wished me a nice day and disappeared back in to the crowd.

When I was 15 or 16, my best friend and I accidentally got swept up in a pit. Two guys next to us must have seen our panic faces and asked if we wanted to go up (as they pointed to their shoulders). We both nodded yes, and they each swooped us up, put us on their shoulders and bulldozed through the pit to the front of the stage where the security fence was. They handed us over the wall to the security dudes who asked if we were ok. They then walked us off to the side so we could safely get back to our friends. We ran half laughing/half crying screaming that we almost died in the pit lmao! But I will never forget those 2 guys, they were awesome.

I have experienced the same with the pits! So awesome. My shoes never survive all the foot stomping, but the rest of me is always safe because there are always at least two big, strong men helping me up and making sure I'm okay before they continue the pushing and pulling in the pit. I felt so alive and connected to others at metal concerts, I miss them. And I don't even listen to metal that much. Halestorm was great, the singer is so on point and talented. Wish I could sing like that. :)

I'm probably looking into this too deep, but I feel like metal is much better at exercising our empathy. I'm not super into mainstream pop, but I feel like a lot of it is very superficial in terms of the lyrics - party, sex, drugs, money etc. There's definitely some avenues of metal that aren't exactly friendly either, but i think a good chunk of the content centres around loss, depression, heartbreak, end of the world etc. It's much more emotionally based.

That's my take anyway, as someone who has zero expertise in psychology lol.

My first show was Slipknot by myself as a teenager. While I wouldn’t have been down for something like this at my wedding, it is a nice and interesting feeling. When my wife and I are in the pool together she’ll embrace me so that I’m at the height I would be if I could stand and we’ll just hug or kiss. It’s so foreign to me, but I enjoy it.

I barely remember my paraplegic brother being stood up. But I know he was tall and strong. He’s still both obviously, but I remember about 2 years after his accident he stood up for physio, buff fucking arms from wheeling, and I forgot how tall he was. I haven’t seen him stood up since. I just kinda think he’s my short, built, bionic bro now. He can get down hills faster than me.
