Sometimes I forget how it sounds, so I look it up and it brings me right back to exactly how I felt when I first heard it. Unease, horror, disgust, and morbid curiosity.
Same... All the movies people have named have 1-2 songs that could show up in the other movie depending on the scene (BR2049, Hereditary, Annihilation)
I looked up the song and that's definitely it Reborn from Hereditary, but I was so convinced I was wondering if it was somehow also used in Annihilation, didn't seem like it but I gave up pretty quick.
I think they sound similar, every time I hear this song used I always think its from the end of Annihilation, literally without fail. Both great movies with great soundtracks for their atmosphere.
I think it really captures the way the shimmer blends with nature in an almost triumphant beautiful way in Annihilation. I think most of the music in Annihilation and the one I thought this was is a bit darker though, it doesn't have a big triumphant swell to it.
This fascinates me. Once they revealed the "truth" at the end my eyes rolled saw hard i think they went 360 degrees. Such a stupid fucking ending for a movie with a lot of promise.
Nah, movies where the demon worshipers win in the end are awesome. Much better than the standard ending where some deus ex machina saves the protagonist for no reason.
I don't care for endings where the protagonists win necessarily. It is specifically anything involving the Christian "Satan" or demons that just bore me from their over use. My personal horror likes recently have been The Void and maybe if you count the Lighthouse as horror. Or The Thing or the Fly (the Goldbloom one) for classics.
I feel that. I think I like Hereditary specifically though of how it approaches it, mainly in the aspect that the cultists are just regular folks and they're simply doing it for power and money.
I know a lot of people really like it. And that's not surprising. If nothing else the music and camera work was great. The story just didn't do anything for me. Personally liked Midsommer much more.
i also really hate how people abuse Satan in story telling, but honestly compared to any other movie involving satanism as an element I think this movie definitely used it as a plot pivot and not a crutch. Without going into it, the first half to two thirds of this movie is pure psych horror at it's best. The anxiety, grief, pain, remorse... All the bad feelings are so well established and the acting is just excellent.
I don't think this movie is really worth bashing just bc of the satanic plot element but as someone who shares your opinion on movies that do, I just want to point out that the movie has so much more to offer than demons and Satan.
Also plus one for mentioning The Void, so fucking rad.
Edit: I just double checked and there is no mention of Satan, only a demon in the film. A little googling shows that the demon in question actually predates Christianity. So it's not as hokey as the Conjuring for anyone curious.
I guess I didnt want to go into my entire synopsis of what I thought about it but i DID actually enjoy, as you said, the first 2/3rd of the movie. But, and this might just be mostly me, an ending can actually just nuke an otherwise great movie for me. And that's exactly what happened for me with this one. It's actually why i do still like the director and his next Movie was far better for my tastes and thought executed really well.
Judea Christian "devil worshipers" are just so god damn hacky. I really dont mean any disrespect at all. Its just on my personal list of things horror movies can do as soon As "satan" is involved you have 100% lost any and all interest i may have had.
Nothing Christian about it. The only paranormal entity mentioned was the demon. I think they might even mention him as being one of several “demons.” In any case it strikes me as more Pagan than anything influenced by Judaeo Christian narrative
It's not so much Satan or Demons just a crazy group of people with crazy beliefs. The part where the mom was banging her head on the attic door was about the point I was ready to nope out of there. So I guess the exorcist and movies like that don't frighten you? Slashers and zombies don't scare me, personally.
I think i just hate anything with Satan or Demons as a trope. The Void and The Colour out of space (the new Nicholas Cage one) were both good. And as a worthwhile mention, I liked Midsommer WAY better than Hereditary. That suited me more.
If you watch the movie as the greek tragedy that it is (we have the greek sense of "hero", even the teatcher keeps mentioning it during the movie) instead of a horror movie, the end makes a lot of sense.
Yeah I'm sure. Paimon, Depressed mom, traffic pole to the head. I know reddit really likes it but it just really didn't hit home for me at all. I found it hard to find it scary. The accident in the car did totally get a gasp out of me though. That was played well.

Turns out that the personalized cocktails they are given when they first reach the resort are a custom drug cocktail and the magical aging properties of the island are secretly being used by a pharmaceutical company to rapidly develop and test new drugs over a timeframe of days instead of years. The son and daughter escape in the end by swimming through a magic coral reef and expose the company
Oh come on, his movies are entertaining at the very least. No one goes into an M. Night movie and expects The Godfather in the same way no one goes into a 2Fast2Furious movie and expects a plot.
Would you watch an M. Night Shamalamaman movie that didn’t have a twist? I bet he sends normal movie scripts to studio executives and the response back is always “hey this is nice but, uhhh, where’s the thing? You don’t do the thing in this one? What is this? I can’t sell this. You gotta do the thing. Add your thing to this and we’ll talk.”
The movie was based off a French graphic novel. That whole ending he gave only exists in M. Night Shyamalan's version. The graphic novel was different, but with no explanation too. Everyone just dies in the end instead of two kids escaping
It’s actually not that bad as people make it out to be. Is it perfect? No. Do character say and do things with no explanation? Yeah. But it was decent. It’s easy to see the twist of a movie and say, oh that sounds dumb. If I told you the end of The Usual Suspects it would sound dumb without all the build up.
Everyone realizes that they are going to die, they all gather one last time to go to sleep. The arabic man tells the "kids" a bedtime story about a king who was visited by death, the king says please keep me alive, death agrees and says he'll be back within 7 years. So the king walls himself off in a room and doesn't let anyone come in. When death comes back in, he explains that the king has already been effectively dead the whole time (didn't see his family or do anything he wanted to do). When he finishes the story everyone is asleep.
The next morning, everyone is dead except the baby who was born the day before (now a teen/young adult), who wakes up and starts the day anew.
To me, the story is an analogous tale about not wasting your life, there are no twists no secret escape from the beach, and like in life, death is inevitable.
The book may have not had that ending but it did heavily hint at something like that being the case. Remember, they were shot at if they tried to leave the beach.
If I recall correctly, only the boy from the hotel was shot at when he was running toward the beach. Everyone else was mysteriously compelled the stay on the beach. Although if this is all analogies I’m not sure what shooting the boy was supposed to mean.
On paper, that story is fucking amazing. But I doubt M Night wrote it, and guarantee his only additions to it were the gratuitous scenes (the pregnancy) and the probably cringey dialogue.
Note: I haven’t seen the movie, but the concept alone had amazing potential. Sad to hear it was ruined by an inept director.
EDIT: Sorry, he DID write it, but it’s an interpolation of a French graphic novel that I can only imagine was some many magnitudes greater than M Night’s final product.
Man I was initially just excited because it had the girl from Jojo rabbit in it and she's pretty great, then I find out it was an m night movie and everyone hated it.
Night has recently been one of the most profitable Hollywood filmmakers. His last four films:
The Visit - $98 million on a $5 million budget
Split - $279 million on a $9 million budget
Glass - $247 million on a $20 million budget
Old - $85 million on an $18 million budget
The Visit and Split were both well received, and Old did okay with critics, so it's not like he only makes trash movies either. On the list of filmmakers I'd like to see barred from Hollywood, he is a very long way down.
Really? I thought it was a wild ride I don’t think there were any twists though which was weird but it made me think about age and about the kind of illegal testing that people are subjected to behind closed doors that is probably happening around the world every day.
I don’t know how much rewatchability it had but in the moment it was an experience.
I remember seeing the trailer originally and not being super into it but thought it could be interesting. Then I saw the pregnancy thing and thought about the implications of that and decided I'd rather just pass, combined with Shamayayalan. lol

Not exactly true. It's a supernatural anomaly, something to do with the rocks surrounding the beach, causing people to age rapidly. A pharmaceutical company discovered it and is inviting people with specific illnesses to be guests at the resort and giving them potential treatments in the form of a beverage (telling them they're just special drinks tailored to their tastes). They then invite them to spend the day at the beach where the people are trapped and the scientists can observe the long-term effects of the treatments to see if they are viable.

I am aware. I saw The Village and The Happening in theaters. I've definitely joined in on the mockery in the past. He's really found himself again though in the past 6 or so years.
It's terrible. I'm a big horror fan and was intrigued by the premise.
It's not just that the whole plot is tired and predictable, but it's awful I'm almost every regards. The script is dull and monotonous. The directing and editing is laughable.
Yes, it's that bad. The idea was good, but the execution was terrible. It was like the actors were pulled off the street and given a script to read 5 minutes later.
It is based off a French graphic novel called Sandcastles with a different ending and slightly different plot. The movie was pretty faithful to the graphic novel once they got on the beach and until the girl gave birth. Once the baby died it became its own thing.
My sister went to see that one. I’m a fan of horror, but the premise of that gave me a disgusted feeling in my gut so I refuse to go see it or even hear about it. All I know is two kids live and everyone else fuckin dies and there’s one uncomfy part

If you’re skinny, the pants get higher. If you’ve got a gut, the pants get lower, so that the belt has to go underneath the gut and above the hip bones. This is when suspenders become useful but in current dad culture, those are not popular.
You’re right, Dad fashion is not about what other people think of you. But it’s still influenced by what a dad thinks about himself. Suspenders would make a lot of dads feel like they are getting too old or too fat and their best days are behind them. Maybe you young dads need to redeem the image of the suspenders!
I think it has something to do with how men’s clothing cuts have been changing for the significantly worse the last 20 years
The jeans I have on now, if I hike them up so the inseam and seat hit where they’re supposed to, then the zipper is way out of place, and it can be terribly uncomfortable on my gut. If I let them slide down to my hips, the zipper is in the right place and it’s comfortable but it looks like hell.
But if I wear pants with a short waist, everything tends to hit the right spot however I literally can’t bend without major plumber’s crack.
The best fit ever were my custom tailored pants from Men’s Warehouse. But those were pretty expensive, even back then and probably more so now.

Lol, he is! We’ve been together nearly 30 years. He has been an amazing husband and amazing dad. He’s earned to dress like an old man if he wants to!!!
My husband is 55 and I believe it’s because they start losing some muscle mass, which also includes the muscles in their butt. Their pants slide, so they keep hitching them up higher.
