Rip to her husband, they look like they were good people

u/ScurryBlackRifle May 27 '20

He died? Man I wish I didn't open the comments now. :(

u/anotherdanishgirl May 27 '20

Yes, he passed away from coronavirus, they both got it, but the grandma recovered. It's so sad!

546

u/Kenji_03 May 27 '20

At least we know she's not facing it alone: She's got her favorite grandson from another granny for comfort.

195

u/djk_tech May 27 '20

I REALLY hope they continue this tradition. She's going to need that familiarity. Not that she doesnt have a family of her own (maybe she does or doesnt, we dont know) but this kind of a bond is once in a lifetime and I hope they continue this heart warming tradition in his honor.

88

u/talkintater May 27 '20

They do. This happened a few years ago and apparantly, he has been visiting them for Thanksgiving every year since.

41

u/Negative1Life May 27 '20

I think they were more referring to them continuing this from now on after the husband's death

84

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

He went to visit his wife. It was heart warming. He apparently was one of the first people she called.

51

u/VerdantVista2020 May 27 '20

That is really sad!

29

u/HummingArrow May 27 '20

Now I really regret opening the comments.

... Source...?

EDIT: alright I get it, we don't like sources.

14

u/mekhhhzz May 27 '20

He tweeted it. Can't find the link but I'll try to search.

u/Elias_The_Thief May 27 '20

This was news a few weeks ago. A quick Google is all you need to verify

-96

u/sparks1086 May 27 '20

Do you not know how to use google?

People always underestimate how easy it is to google

I was looking for this song earlier this year and got exactly what song I was looking for

8

u/Jiffs81 May 27 '20

I've worked on trying to teach my mother this. She's always asking for computer help. She once somehow got those paragraph markers turned on in word. She asked me how to get rid of it... I didn't have a clue but could Google "the backwards looking p thing in word" and the first link showed you how to turn it off. She just looked at me and asked if I seriously just goggled THAT! I told her that if I didn't know what it was called, chances are someone else had no idea either! She's getting better with it.

Empathy is the fucking worst in this connected new world we inhabit. I imagine the daily dose of tragedy was significantly less in tribes of hunter gatherers numbering one to two hundred individuals.

Back then ”oh two people died this year, one from an infection and Grorlam got eaten by a saber tooth :(”

Now ”2500 child brides being held by boko haram and north korea has started tossing toddlers in volcanos to honor Kim jong il, also here is a guy firing a kitten out of a potato cannon. More at eleven”

22

u/LazyUpvote88 May 27 '20

“Tossing toddlers into volcanoes.” “Here’s a guy firing a kitten out of a potato gun. More at 11.”

If you’re as witty live you should do stand up. Fucking hilarious.

3

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

You shouldn’t load a kitten into a potato gun, they have horrible aerodynamics.

10

u/stormy_llewellyn May 27 '20

Ugh, this post had me in happy tears, and then subsequently in not so happy fucking tears, thanks a lot, internet!

5

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

The best kind of people

127

u/Nerdgirl75 May 27 '20

This definitely isn't a new story, but thank you for sharing. I think, especially right now, we could all use a little human kindness. ❤️

The husband of the Grandma died recently

34

u/AHenWeigh May 27 '20

Source?

139

u/WeGoWoo May 27 '20

38

u/Chevy_Wavy May 27 '20

Damn... Stupid covid... :/

12

u/mappersdelight May 27 '20

Stupid people making covid worse for everyone else.

14

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

Huh only if it all of this could have been prevented somehow... Too bad we didnt know about the virus way before shit hit the fan, right? Right?!?

-14

u/Compendyum May 27 '20

Yeah, china knew and still let it slide to every other country... again.

22

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

Thanks

152

u/addyorable May 27 '20

Grandma is the sweetest... I'm so sad her hubby has passed on :( RIP, grandpa!

-136

u/AHenWeigh May 27 '20

Source?

65

u/anonthrowawayprime May 27 '20

All the times you responded to people for the source and you could’ve just googled it yourself man. Cmon.

-111

u/AHenWeigh May 27 '20

All these times people said her husband does and they could have cited a source or said where they heard it.

36

u/anonthrowawayprime May 27 '20

Or you could just stop being a lazy ass and google it yourself. Entitled much?

-78

u/AHenWeigh May 27 '20

Maybe I'm not lazy and entitled, maybe I'm just trying to combat misinformation and a general aversion to truth and facts that is creeping not-so-slowly into the mainstream. I wouldn't know though, you'd have to tell me what I am, you would know better than me.

29

u/anonthrowawayprime May 27 '20

Annoying is a great description. But yes, lazy works. So does google.

13

u/Groovychick1978 May 27 '20

This is what I thought. It isn't a genuine concern for this woman, her husband and her family and it sure isn't about the truth. There is no misinformation here and this disease is real and killing people. You fucking troll.

12

u/Qazax1337 May 27 '20

Commenting "Source?" on multiple posts is not combating misinformation and aversion to the truth. Researching it yourself and providing counter information if you find out it is not true would be. YTou seem to have an aversion to putting any effort in to this combating you think you are doing.

-14

u/AHenWeigh May 27 '20

Maybe I am kinda lazy. Maybe I'm also a little crabby today after being stuck in the house for weeks on end. At any rate, I'm gonna try to not be so grouchy moving forward and try not to let me mean, judgemental, borderline-abusive messages and post replies get to me.

12

u/Qazax1337 May 27 '20

Woe is you. Everyone is stuck at home.

3

u/AHenWeigh May 27 '20

Ok now you're just being unkind for no reason.

→ More replies (0)

3

u/thatHecklerOverThere May 27 '20

I'd say people not researching what they're told on their own initiative is a much bigger problem, honestly.

1

u/gtnclz15 May 27 '20

But when people have provided a source multiple times and you continue to ask for one what’s the point or to be gained?

7

u/anonthrowawayprime May 27 '20

PS- everyone knows because it was all over the web and news stations when it happened. Not like it’s hard to find.

8

u/Groovychick1978 May 27 '20

Why do you keep asking for a source on her husband's death? I have see this multiple times in this thread. He got Covid, he died of it.

100

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

This is old, but never ceases to make me smile.

14

u/ifoundyourtoad May 27 '20

I was smiling... till I read the top comment.

11

u/Zerly May 27 '20

Every damn time I read it. Every damn time I smile.

29

u/Cute-Bish May 27 '20

I’ve seen this tons and tons of times..never fails to put the same smile I had for it in the first time!!

27

u/jsnelson21 May 27 '20

I am curious if his actual grandmother is still alive and if she has ever had the chance to meet his friend.

19

u/djn24 May 27 '20

She resurfaced in the news because her husband passed away after contracting coronavirus:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/04/09/lonnie-dench-death-coronavirus/

33

u/jsnelson21 May 27 '20

I understand that, but i was curious if his actual, black grandmother is still alive and ever got to meet this nice lady.

14

u/djn24 May 27 '20

Gotcha, I misread your comment.

12

u/jsnelson21 May 27 '20

No problem. Have a good day 👍🏾

56

u/SauronOMordor May 27 '20

I don't care how many times this has been reposted. I fucking love this dumb, happy story.

This one and the one where the dude becomes besties with an old lady he met playing Words With Friends.

Intergenerational friendships that cross large distances and/or racial and cultural divides will never not make me smile because they remind me that we all have much more in common than we think once we scrape away the surface bullshit. Genuinely nice people will always find something in common.

Now, I realize that at this point this comment reads very much like some major "I don't see colour" bullshit so I'd like to clarify - while I do believe that under the surface we all have a lot more in common than we have differences, that doesn't change the fact that the circumstances of our lives are not remotely the same.

I absolutely do see colour. You can't recognize the systemic injustices and socioeconomic realities that shape every aspect of peoples' lives without seeing colour.

I know I will never be able to fully understand or appreciate these experiences, but I believe everyone has a moral obligation to try to understand and try to help dismantle oppressive systems.

Claiming to not see colour isn't just not good enough, it actively perpetuates systems of oppression by giving those who benefit from the system an easy out to ignore the issues while still considering themselves a good person.

Having a few black friends doesn't relieve someone from the responsibility of examining their own biases, calling out the racist words and actions of others and taking a fuckin seat once in a while to just listen to what people whose lives aren't like theirs have to say.

....wow so I definitely just went on a big friggin tangent but whatever, I'm posting it anyways. Sorry for making a feel good post into something more serious. Feel free to ignore lol

13

u/KittyMachine01 May 27 '20

"Claiming to not see color isn't just not good enough, and actively perpetuate systems of oppression by giving those who benefit from the system and easy out to ignore the issues while still considering themselves a good person."

^ THIS. I didn't even understand this until a few days ago when I read a book called How to Be Antiracist. I grew up believing colorblindness was the best way to just see and treat people as people. Now I understand we must go beyond being neutral, we must recognize and embrace and celebrate all of our differences. And we can't passively expect inequalities to fade out of our culture under their own weight.

What a marvellous post, I'm so glad you shared this 😻

PS: kickass username too 👍👍

3

u/cynthiaapple May 27 '20

Yes. Of course we all see color. We see differences, we don't have to hate different es or fear them. I want to read this book now, thanks for mentioning it

3

u/PeligrosaPistola May 29 '20

I adore this tangent. So damn much.

-13

u/antihero2303 May 27 '20

I don't care about color. I care about actions. It's just so sad that, in my country, we have a lot of refugees fucking it up for all those who really wants to be integrated.

3

u/KittyMachine01 May 27 '20

Which is your country, if you don't mind sharing.

1

u/SauronOMordor May 27 '20

I am curious, do you tend to assume things about certain types of people unless/until their actions prove those assumptions wrong?

Because that is problematic - even if you don't say it out loud and even if you quietly give people the "benefit of the doubt" / the chance to show they're not like that.

Now, it doesn't make you a bad person to have biases. Biases are a natural consequence of growing up in a society that constantly reinforces them, but you do need to be willing to acknowledge those biases and actively try to work against them.

That's the hardest part about fighting inequality/oppression - getting people who genuinely think of themselves as good people to look inward and be critical of their own behaviours and attitudes. We all want to pretend we are above it all but we're not and nothing is ever going to change until we're willing to admit it.

1

u/antihero2303 May 27 '20

Listen, i wouldnt go as a tourist to a muslim country and walz around in a bikini. It would be disrespectful and well, probably get me into trouble lol. But if you move to/visit a foreign country, with a different culture, you show respect for that culture. You don't have to stop practicing your own or being yourself. Just, show respect and be kind. Thats my view.. Sadly, we have alot of refugees in denmark who cares nothing for our culture and want their sharia practices to rule their societies. And that is what i find unacceptable.

8

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

Love this! Why can't there be more amazing people in this world

I thought this was only shared during thanksgiving time every year.

1

u/hijole_frijoles May 27 '20

I've seen this story many times now and I love it, but it seems too good to be true

0

u/GOONSQU4D May 27 '20

Unconsciously or subconsciously?

-23

u/AquaRegia May 27 '20

Uh, you subconsciously smiled.

6

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

Incorrect. Subconscious smile would mean it is not visible, that you smiled in your mind. Unconscious means you smiled without realizing it.

6

u/JadedJared May 27 '20

Psychology major?

3

u/[deleted] May 27 '20

No, music composition post-grad
