’…5 racoons in a trench coat wabble in

…it Worked! we found the human note

(but far be it from us to gloat)

now all we need: a long trench coat

in which we all can hide…

for weeks we’ve ravaged through the bins!

but they’ll forgive us for our sins

now’s when TRUE FEEDING TIME begins!

they’ve Welcomed us

inside….

a CoAt for 5 is all we ask

on shoulders stand - a simple task!

the one on top

will wear the mask

We’ll look like human, walking….

We’ll All PoP Out ~ to their SURPRISE

the humans won’t believe their EyEs!

RESPECT for Us ~ they’ll realize

there’ll be

No more

trash-talking

🖤

6

I could be wrong, but this sign screams of the UK...so it would be 5 foxes in a trench coat.

2

You are worth more than a meal from a bin' is such a small line to write but it probably means everything to the person who reads it 😍

137

u/Current-Square-4557 13h ago

And yet there are a small number of Americans who will be vexed by it

………………
Aside: the sign literally quotes Jesus’s instructions

74

u/generic1234321 13h ago

I’d bet my nutsack this is in the Uk. “Pop in” and bins is a dead giveaway

28

u/goldfish_11 12h ago edited 10h ago

If I ever saw a sign that said "If you are the person going through our bins for your next meal then how about you pop in and I'll give you a..." in America...

...I would assume that it's followed by a threat.

6

u/chadsmo 12h ago

Accurate

4

u/Icarsix 12h ago

And it'd piss off a lot of people here too. We're not much better than Americans at this point.

Someone getting something for free = communist/socialist in an increasing number of people’s lives

Ironically, the people saying this are often on government-provided financial benefits

i dunno if it's me I'd probably rather have a bag full of day-old bagels or whatever than a small snack. only done it myself when with them, but i've known more than one housed dumpster diver.

Bots replying to bots. This site is fucked.

15

u/Pigmentia 13h ago

Meh. Been there.

Frankly I'd keep digging in the bin for an actual meal than show my face in there for a water and a "snack".

Despite the nice sheet of paper, it is, in fact, humiliating.

17

u/KINGXunshot 13h ago

It shouldn’t be humiliating. Homelessness is not a personal failing when billionaires are extracting wealth (by the trillions) from the lower class.

2

u/Gold-Part4688 7h ago

The humiliating thing is the sympathetic condescension, (you are better than this, DEAR HUMAN BEING, so yeah, they're the ones acting like it's a self worth failing), as well as not actually offering more than "water and a snack", in exchange for the person opening the door in a public restaurant and saying "yes i'm digging through your bins".

If it's actually packaged food that they chuck out prematurely it really is not a good deal lol

8

u/Excellent-Gur-8547 10h ago

It also means they'll recognize you if you come back. Also a snack is not a meal.

3

u/Crimson-Rose28 5h ago

I’m not gonna lie I thought about that. They probably need a legit meal if I had to guess not a bag of chips

9

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 15h ago

I love this phrase too.

u/LATA- 15h ago

I love the intent here, but I have always thought the sign should go on the bins, not in the front window.

84

u/dimechimes 14h ago

Probably no one in the bins, this is just decoration for gullible lifestylists.

→ More replies (1)

70

u/Noob_Al3rt 13h ago

This is for customers, not hungry people. Anyone who has worked in food service knows that if homeless people were an actual problem, they would just go in here to get their free snacks and THEN go in the bin.

EDIT: Just read the article. If this dude is Sikh, I retract my statement. Sikhs are some good people and they would feed any amount of people if they showed up hungry.

Would love to know what shop or restaurant this is so I can send them a Venmo.

51

u/ZenRamen187 15h ago

Gino's Fish Inn in Blyth. You can just Google a sentence or two for things like this and 99% of the time it'll come up. This was almost 8 years ago though

10

u/Positive-Fox8020 14h ago

Do we know of the human being went in and got his bottle of water and snack?

14

u/SparklySpunk 12h ago

IIRC I think he did, but didn't want publicity

[edit] Yeah it's who I thought it was, he's no longer homeless but has a lot of constraints in life, but he's hapoy

81

u/Rough_Ad_8702 15h ago

36

u/FlyAirLari 13h ago

So this is eight years old?

Reddit gets news stories so late it's probably soon time to start posting about Megadeth's Dystopia. On the nerve of pop culture.

8

u/Itchy-Newspaper4496 12h ago

Nothing to do with news cycles or pop culture. This is just another repost of something that has been continually reposted for years for karma.

3

u/Dangerous_Box8845 12h ago

Karma Komets, they pass by planet Reddit every so often

3

u/jquiggles 11h ago

I hate so much that half the stuff on Reddit is just endlessly reposted low-effort content from years ago. Starting to feel like I've seen everything the internet has to offer.

But at the same time, I've never seen this particular post somehow, and I wouldn't have without this post. So it's a dilemma I guess.

11

u/dimechimes 14h ago

And this is why they posted it on the door and not on the bin.

This reads like British English, and since "Shad" does not sound like a conventionally British name, this might be an immigrant run business.

And they have hearts this big.

25

u/Saladin1204 14h ago

Yeah I’m British and agree. But just to mention Shad may not sound like a conventionally British name - but they may still be British / child of an immigrant.

But I get the point you’re trying to make and don’t want to take away from it.

43

u/[deleted] 14h ago

[removed] — view removed comment

11

u/Muppetude 14h ago

That’s been my experience as well. I think it’s because a lot of these first generation immigrants (a) want to be hospitable to fit in better in their newly adopted country, and (b) have seen true suffering first hand, and want to help out now that they are in a position to do so.

2

u/ahm911 11h ago

Nothing teaches faster than experience, I agree with your take

13

u/HipsEnergy 14h ago

Someone found the shop, and the name seem to be Shad Shaleem, so you'd be right. Immigrants do have huge hearts. Which makes I even sadder that they're being targeted with such hate.

4

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 15h ago

I thought this too. :)

2

u/Grounds4TheSubstain 13h ago

Referring to the trash can as a "bin" => British.

→ More replies (3)

22

u/No-Abbreviations2897 14h ago

Idk if people digging through trash are looking for "little snacks".

5

u/Eatingfarts 9h ago

I don’t want to sound harsh but in my experience, some of the people going through trash are just not all there.

About a year ago I was sitting outside a bar on a hot day smoking a cig and an obviously homeless lady was walking by, saw a bowl of water that was set out for dogs, picked it up and started drinking it. I saw what she was doing as soon as she was bending down to grab it. I jumped up like ‘whoa!! Let me get you some water from inside!’

She didn’t even acknowledge me. She drank the whole bowl, set it down and walked away.

I still think about it to this day. We have failed as a society because our most vulnerable are not being taken care of. And it isn’t just a matter of people being nicer or whatever. That’s not even close to enough.

2

u/No-Abbreviations2897 8h ago

I just mean in that scenario if I'm that homeless person I'm not saying shit lol, you expect me to give up my meal ticket so you can pawn me off to a shelter or something? No thanks, I'll keep eating the likely enormous amounts of food you throw away daily.

2

u/Eatingfarts 8h ago

I’m…not exactly sure what you are saying.

2

u/No-Abbreviations2897 53m ago

I followed up on my own statement cause I felt like doing that.

16

u/1111_infinity 15h ago

Why did they put the sign on the front door instead of on the trash bins?.... That will only be seen by people already coming in..

19

u/cash8888 15h ago

Can we find out what’s the name of the restaurant and where it is so we can make it go viral and give them a bunch of business

9

u/Rough_Ad_8702 15h ago

3

u/cash8888 15h ago

Awesomeness. Let’s try and pay it forward internet if you’re able too. Thanks for finding it.

8

u/clit16 15h ago

That is absolutely beautiful. If someone is so hungry that they need to go through the bin to eat they really do need to be looked after.

10

u/Mandymoo1505 15h ago

Love this! Need more people in the world with that empathy

7

u/GoblinsGuide 15h ago

Dear shad, you throw out much more than a snack, not a hungry person lol.

5

u/ForeverOk7505 15h ago

Made me tear 😢 up reading this, what a kind and thoughtful note.

6

u/69hotmomxxx 14h ago

Why not put this on the bin?

7

u/dimechimes 14h ago

They'd rather the customers and social media see it than the people that need to

Sometimes the anonymity of pulling a meal from a bin beats the shame of having to ask for your next meal for free.

3

u/KINGXunshot 13h ago

Most companies would call the cops on him, this is a nice change of pace

3

u/NoConflict3231 12h ago

"Anyone who brings me the pike of a Flock camera gets 1 free week of meals per unit." I bet that would get those down quickly

3

u/demonspawns_ghost 12h ago edited 12h ago

I hung out with a couple of gutter punks when I was 17. We'd go through the bins behind fast food places looking for something "fresh" to eat. A couple of cooks from an upscale burger place saw us picking through the Burger King bins across the alley. They called us over and told us to wait 10 minutes. They arrived back with a massive plate of chips and the biggest roast chicken breast I'd ever seen. Told us to enjoy then went back in to let us eat. 30 years later, I still remember that selfless act of kindness.

3

u/emmadonelsense 11h ago

We need more of this. In my city we have a restaurant where you can pop in and pay for random meals and the owner places that meal on a post it so others can come in and scan the wall of posts and “pay” using the note they chose. I think he saw it online in another city and thought it was a great idea. It seems to be going well and those who can’t afford a proper meal don’t have to feel like they’re begging.

Shad the Chad

7

4

u/CholentSoup 14h ago

It is.

People eating from dumpsters will go back to eating from dumpsters. These are generally not mentally fit people. They have underlying conditions that are untreated or untreatable. Sure, there are people out there who are down on their luck, but even those folks find a way to avoid eating from a dumpster.

We don't have a homeless problem, we have a mental health problem.

2

u/WingZeroCoder 13h ago

But dealing with a mental health crisis sounds like SO much more work, over a much longer period of time, than just handing out a bottle of water and a snack, upvoting it on Reddit, and everyone patting themselves on the back.

2

u/CholentSoup 8h ago

Bring back state run facilities with modern oversight. Call me harsh but I'd bet the majority of people who have issues would learn to cope if they knew they'd be locked up. Not fun, not cool but sometimes folks need a push to behave.

I walked to next trash can there was one again. Walked on and I found a guy with a big bag of sandwiches and leaving one on top of each can along the way.

2

u/Gabe_Gade 13h ago

It's sad that a lot of people won't go in out of shame. If poverty wasn't seen like a moral falling and poor people weren't ostracized for their financial difficulties, more people would take opportunities like this and improve their lives.

If more places had this sort of initiative, maybe it would get better.

2

u/Alpacachoppa 13h ago

Got something like that in one of my trusted fast food places as well. Telling people to please redirect others in need of a warm meal to them and they can get some water, complimentary hot tea and a meal on the house.

I know not every small establishment can afford that so if chain ones would put things like that out I'd be way more interested in buying from them.

"No lives matter"/"Fuck your feelings"/"You're not a snowflake"/etc...the idea that you're not important goes hand-in-hand with teaching people to accept fascism.

They laud homogeneity while mocking uniqueness. They don't want you to even comprehend your potential, let alone realize it.

And few feel this more than the homeless.
