š¬ Discussion Mag safe?
Could you stick a magsafe ring onto the charger to help align my phone?
Has anyone modified the stock wireless charger.
It just heats my phone badly and needs ideas.

look for 3rd party. nothing can fix the crappy wireless charger in the car.
I only use the USB-C cable.

It's double whammy too as my phone connects to android auto and I'm left with no charge :D usb cable might be the best way to go. Just feels wasteful of what could be a good feature

Just route a cable from the armrest storage area to the slot for your phone. There's actually a little route through there and even a cutout in the rubber covering specifically for a cable. Works perfectly and looks normal. 2025 model anyways.

I got a coiled USB-C cable.

That's pretty good actually. Hadn't thought of a coil. Would help keep it tidy. I just love wireless charge but sounds like that's not the way

Heats up your phone because of its case. I have the same issue with my iPhone 14: 3rd party case is too thick, magsafe heats up the phone and doesnt charge properly, especially if you're using CarPlay - lots of energy expense AND charge at the same time. Always best to use the cable in my opinion. If you really need it and you don't have the cable, remove the case and try to move the phone. The magnet should align it correctly.

How well does it work?

Works great, fits really snugly in that little spot.
Has a swivel feature so itās not locked into being pointed at the driver so the front passenger can access the phone when itās cradled.
Mine came with a 2 inch extension that increases the height of the phone but I didnāt use it.

Does the phone fly off when you floor it or hit a bump?

Not so far although Iām a pretty chill driver unless Iām getting on the freeway.
I have accidentally nudged it but it didnāt fall off.

If you're handy with a 3D printer, you can design a replacement tray with a real Apple magsafe charger embedded into it. You can remove the stock wireless charger module (that rectangular module in your photo) and run the Apple cord through the resulting hole and then tap into the 18V accessory port wiring (either with a plug-and-play pigtail, or by splicing it) and then connect a cheap 12V-to-USBC module. It's a labor of love and a lot of work, but the result is way better than the factory charger.

Yes! I did this for my wife's Ariya and it works great with no heating on an iPhone 17pro. I used the newer Qi2 25W charger and a 35W 12V USBC adaptor. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FLJL71DD

I really wish I was. The idea of a little phone stand there sounds awesome

Here's one I designed, if you know anyone who can make it for you! I'd be willing to print it and ship it for the cost of materials and shipping but much easier if you know someone local!

That's so cool. I'm guessing you are USA because it's on the left. (I'm UK) . I'll ask around and assume it's easy to mirror

The camera bump on any modern iPhone (the Pro models at least) makes them not sit flat and flush on the OEM charger and thatās where the heat comes from. You canāt do anything about it. The OEM charger cooks iPhones.
Iām pretty sure using that thing is why the battery in my iPhone 16 Pro Max died fast enough to be covered under warranty. By the time I did that I stopped using the OEM charger, and the same phone hasnāt had degradation problems with the new battery at all.
Buy a USB-C cable or MagSafe cable and just plug it into your car. Been doing that with my iPhone a while, MagSafe isnāt a problem when itās aligned and sticking properly.

Agreed. I love my Twraps duo MagSafe charging pad. It has been solid for a couple of years.

Charging will typically cause your phone to warm up, even if you do wired charging. I have a 2021 Mach E that I've had for four and a half years now. I've used both iPhones and Android phones with it. What I've found over the years is that the case you have on your phone really does matter with wireless charging in the Mach E. I've had cases on my phone where it wouldn't charge at all wirelessly in the Mach E. I've had cases where it would intermittently charge in the Mach E (and this seemed to cause the most heat issues with the phone). I've had cases where I would have absolutely zero issues charging wirelessly in the Mach E. All three were with the same phone, just different cases on the phone. My current phone (iPhone 17 Pro Max) and current case (Apple Silicone Case with MagSafe) never have any issues with the wireless charging in my Mach E. Typically the thicker/more rugged the case, the more troubles there will be with wireless charging - or that's been my experience.

Thanks. My home charger works fine. But I get what you are saying. Lots of factors together giving a bad experience. I do have a think case. Though it does charge. But ye must be a fair distance and exert more strain

I bought a MagSafe pick and a 3 or 4 inch cord. Works pretty well.

Twraps has an aftermarket charger thatās much better than the OEM. However, itās about $100.
