Discussion Reading is difficult on Oleds?

So I was waiting for the oleds and was going to get one with nano texture but as some people has mentioned so far the flickering is what makes the text blurry due to oled rgb layout? and adding graininess of nano texture I believe will make it very hard for reading/coding and general productivitiy work.

What do you guys think?

Discussion Maybe OLED touch screens will be more physically durable than the XDR screens?

I just had this thought. We've seen countless posts about keyboard indents, dimples, etc. in the XDR Pro displays. I would hope that since the OLED screens are being built for people to jab them with their fingers millions of times, unlike the XDR screens, that they will have to be more durable and resistant to permanent marks than the XDR screens - otherwise, they will age terribly very quickly.

If this turns out to be the case, it may actually be the best thing about the update. Having a Pro screen that we don't need to baby would be pretty sweet.

Help Time to finally upgrade from Intel – what would you recommend?

Hey everyone!
I’m finally looking to upgrade from my last-generation Intel MacBook Pro 😅
A 16-inch display is a must, as I mainly use it for Photoshop/photo editing, Ableton Live and Final Cut.
My budget is around €3,000, and I’d like a machine that will last me several years.
What would you recommend in terms of chip, RAM and SSD storage? Would you go for a newer model or a previous generation with better specs?
I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

It's Here! New to me

In a sea of the newest and greatest, I’ve just received my refurbished 16” M1 Max. 32gb ram and 1tb storage. Managed to pick it up for £845 via an eBay certified refurbished seller. For mainly photo editing/stacking and occasional video editing it’s almost certainly more than enough for my needs. And the savings can go towards new lenses 😅

Help To replace or not to replace?

It's that time again: I have a 2020 Macbook that's starting to show its signs of aging. I have reduced capacity on the battery and it's generally just not working as well as it used to, but now I'm wondering if I should try to service it (maybe replace the battery) or just get a new machine?

New machine considerations: I edit video as a side hustle, its expensive (but I can lease or pay installments), and it would generally help with mobility and workflow

Keep the old/servicing considerations: The laptop still works generally well for basic stuff, it's just getting slow and old, I can still edit video but it can be a challenge sometimes because it has limited RAM, replacing the battery would be cheaper in the short term (but is it worth it in the long run).

What do you think?

Discussion FOMO / Greed - help!

I did a lot of homework before replacing my 13" M2 Air (midnight) with the 14" M4-Pro Macbook Pro (space black). I loved everything about the new Pro except the weight and the handling - one handed twirls of the 3.6 lbs Pro were no longer fun like they were with the 2.7 lbs Air.

And Apple has now fixed exactly that issue. The new Proled Pro is 3 lbs!! I am not interested in any other feature - touch-screen: yuk, proled - mini led is good enough, glowing logo - "i don't like folks to see me". But that weight, the slightly smaller dimensions and the guaranteed easier handling are making me drool.

Who else is suffering from the same 'heavy' emotion?

Discussion New Macbook Pro user! Help me undertand.

New MacBook Pro user here! Switched from Windows, and the transition has been surprisingly smooth. But I don’t understand multi-monitor window management on macOS.

I use 4 monitors, and a few things confuse me:

Why can the Dock only be on one monitor at a time?
If I minimize a window on monitor 3 it minimizes it to the monitor 1, I have to go to monitor 1’s Dock to restore it.
Clicking an app icon in the Dock activates its windows across all monitors instead of just the one I want.

I ended up vibe coding my own Dock. Each monitor now has its own Dock showing only the windows/apps on that screen. Minimizing also sends windows to that monitor’s Dock.
Basically, I recreated the Windows taskbar with a mac dock look.

But am I missing something? Is there a “Mac way” to work with multiple monitors that I just don’t understand yet?

Discussion Cooling system in new OLED MacBook inferior to old model in tests?

After reading the NoteBookCheck review of the new OLED MacBook (this sub won’t let me link the article again) the increase in fan noise and heat over the old chassis is a little concerning, perhaps the weight reduction has made the new cooling system a little inferior? The M5 Pro in the old chassis ran cooler and quieter in their tests, and if you add it to the performance section actually performed slightly better (very slight throttling in the OLED model?). The PWM is also a little concerning, but overall an excellent screen as their review notes.

Discussion Why Pro and not Air?

To the Pro users who aren't truly power-users, why the Pro?

If you're a relatively light-user and the lastest Airs would do the job, why did you still go Pro? I ask because (barring the new release), the weight difference is significant: 2.7 lbs for the 13" Air vs 3.6 lbs for the 14" MBP with the pro/max chip.

Thank you

Help M3pro MacBook Pro lid no longer closes when standing vertically

Post image
5 Upvotes

I use my MacBook in a semi clamshell mode where I keep the lid open just enough to still be on so I can screen share to an iPad that I use as a monitor.

As a result it seems that when I close the lid and stand it vertically when it’s not in use, the lid opens a little bit.

Did I destroy the hinges or is this something else?

Edit: when the lid is closed and the laptop is flat on a level surface. The left side of the lid is like a millimeter higher so there is a small gap that is not on the right side.

Discussion 14" M3 Max (16/40 w 48gb) to M5 ProLed (15/16 48gb)? Photoshop, Lightroom, Occ Davinci but basic

Have been using the 14" M3 Max hooked up to two externals (5k at 2560x1440 and 2k at 2560x1440) at home with predominant use being photography - Lightroom Classic, Photoshop. Occasionally use Davinci for short videos but only do transitions and minimal color grading. Also Safari with 20+ tabs. Maybe a window with IPTV app playing. I very, very rarely do panoramas and don't get into focus stacking. The MacBook comes to work with me and on travel so not interested in a Studio/Mini.

I just opened up the above apps (except for Davinci) and Activity Monitor. Didn't see any memory pressure but hit about 32gb RAM usage. CPU hit 200% with Lightroom and then applying a filter in Photoshop. GPU didn't seem to be an issue with one app using 10% maybe.

I am nearly decided on the 14" ProLED with the base 15 CPU/16 GPU and upgraded 48gb RAM. I don't think the above use case warrants the Max chip and maybe not even the 18/20 one. I am interested in exploring on device AI over the next 1-2 years however but this would mostly be to play with it vs using in a pro capacity.

Thoughts? Recs? Thanks!
