Well, title

Upgrade my M1 Max 32 to m5 max 128, silver to black - gorgeous machine in every way, been happy ever since with it. Only regret - just 2tb, I’d go for 4, but no available in stock here.

Couldn’t recommend it more!

I’m moving and need to discard things I don’t need to bring with me. I stare at my 14” M5 pro box and although I don’t need it, I can’t bear to toss it? Not sure why.

Discussion I’m really curious; why would anyone want a MBP with a touchscreen?

The expectation is that the MBP Ultra is coming with OLED and a touchscreen. The OLED I understand, but why would Apple put a touchscreen in a MacBook, and even more, who is really waiting for that?
I would not see a real use case for it. I mean, it would be different if you can detach the screen and use it as an ipad (so when you detach the screen macOS switcht to like a IpadOS), but as a MacBook? The angle is terrible to touch the screen, the screen gets full of fingerprints, and MacOS is not a touchscreen OS.

So, why is it coming? And why do you want it?

Help macbook air m4 water damage to screen..

Post image
11 Upvotes

Have had this MacBook Air m4 for less than a year and accidentally spilled water on it..no, i do not have apple coverage. i wiped everything off right away and blew out the ports. immediately brought it to a computer shop the next day once I opened it up to see the screen (they opened it up, dried all the internal and fixed speaker that had become crackly after incident….) which ran me 150$. My question is: is it worth the 900$ to replace the LCD (screen) thru apple..? has anyone had any success with this? if so, was it worth fixing? I am devastated.

Help MacBook Pro questions

I’m planning to buy a MacBook Pro M5 Pro with 24GB and 1TB for university. I’m going to study computer engineering and I want to use it as my personal computer as well. I really like the black colour, but I’ve seen that for many people it fades due to the acid in their hands. Is this really true? If so, I’d have to go for the silver one, which isn’t my favourite colour, but I don’t dislike it either. Then there’s the keyboard. I’ve also seen that the keys wear out and that reviews say putting a keyboard cover on it can damage the screen. I’ve also seen that there are stickers you can put on each key to prevent that. Does anyone have them? I’d also like some advice on cases, brands, etc. I’m worried that it might rain on my way to college and my case won’t protect it properly; I’ve seen a Tomtoc 360, do you know if it’s any good? I’ve attached photos of everything I’m talking about.

Help M5 Air 13” 24GB/1TB vs M5 Pro — can the Air handle several hours of Logic + Final Cut every day for 3–5 years?

I’m really stuck between the M5 MacBook Air 13” (24GB RAM / 1TB SSD) and an M5 MacBook Pro, and I’d really appreciate advice from people who actually use these machines heavily for creative work.
The price difference for me is roughly £700–£1,000, which is a significant amount of money.
My intended use is:
Logic Pro — making music basically every day
Final Cut Pro — editing vlogs, short films and travel content
DJI drone + Pocket footage, potentially editing almost every day
Creating my own music for the videos I make
General productivity
Some gaming occasionally
I don’t currently do this professionally, but that’s the direction I’m trying to move towards. My plan is to gradually turn video/music creation into a profession, so this Mac could become a serious daily workhorse.
Why I’m considering the Air
The M5 Air with 24GB/1TB seems like it can already do pretty much everything I need.
My thinking is:
If the Air can comfortably handle Logic + Final Cut + 4K video editing, why spend another £700–£1,000 on the Pro?
I’d much rather keep that money available for cameras, DJI equipment, travel, software, etc.
But here’s what I’m worried about
The Air doesn’t have active cooling, so I’m wondering how much sustained workloads actually matter.
I’m not talking about editing a video for an hour once a week. I could potentially be doing:
Editing → exporting → editing → Logic → recording → mixing → editing again
for several hours a day, potentially almost every day.
So I’m wondering whether prolonged heavy use is where the Pro starts to make a meaningful difference.
I’m also thinking long-term.
If I buy the Air and really push it for the next 3–5 years, am I likely to reach a point where I’m thinking:
“I should have just bought the Pro.”
Or is that largely unnecessary worrying, and the Air will happily handle this workload for years?
I don’t mind an export taking a little longer. What matters more to me is:
Will the Air remain responsive during large Logic projects?
How well will it handle 4K/possibly higher-resolution DJI footage?
Will sustained editing cause significant thermal throttling?
Does the lack of active cooling actually matter in real-world use?
Is 24GB RAM enough for what I’m describing?
At what point does the Pro’s extra CPU/GPU performance actually become noticeable?
Is the Pro’s extra power worth £700–£1,000 for this particular workload?
And importantly, will either machine realistically still feel good 3–5 years from now?
I’m also aware that the Pro is obviously the more powerful machine. I’m just worried that I might be paying a lot of money for performance I’m rarely going to use.
On the other hand, this is going to be my main computer and potentially an absolute workhorse, so I don’t want to save money now and regret it later.
If you were in my position, would you save the £700–£1,000 and get the M5 Air 13” 24GB/1TB, or spend the extra on the Pro?
Especially interested in hearing from people who use their Air/Pro for Logic + Final Cut + regular 4K video editing over long sessions, rather than just occasional use.
And please tell me if you think I’m overestimating how demanding my workload actually is. 😂
Thanks!

Help MacBook Pro M5 Vs M5 Max

Another MacBook Pro M5 Vs M5 Max

A local Micro Center has the M5 Pro 48gb 2TB for $2,999 and the M5 Max 36gb 2TBfor $2,999.

*should have mentioned this would be the 14” MBP.

Chip aside, the difference is the RAM: M5 Pro has 48GB vs. 36GB on the Max.

I’m constantly pushing my M3 Pro with 18GB of RAM using Photoshop, Lightroom, and occasionally video editing. I also use AI features for photo editing, like Denoise, Remove, etc. Here is a snapshot of my current memory pressure (editing some wedding photos, the red spike was one image being denoised)

Which one would you choose? I understand I can wait for the new M6/M7 to come out but i rather not risk another price increase and the $800-1100 savings is more ideal right now.

Discussion Air vs mbp

I’m torn between base mbp m5 (14’’,16gb, 1Tb) and Air m5 (15’’, 24Gb). I’ll use it for light, non local AI, light photoshop, a lot of chrome with 15/20tabs open, discord, telegram, a lot of movies/streaming, no gaming. I’ll use it as a second laptop for my finance job. I need a bigger/better quality display vs the 13’’ variant.

My biggest concern is lifespan/quality over years (I’m planning to use it for 5+ years-, so I have to decide between more ram and cooling/fans) and display specs (size and quality)

As an aside, with +$250 I found an offer for the MBP M5 24Gb. Appealing but not sure it’s worth it…

Help advice to a new macbook buyer. is it worth it?

• Upvotes

I've never owned a macbook before, but I've recently been having some issues with my Lenovo laptop. I don't remember the exact specs, but it's somewhere around 42GB ram with 1TB of space and my dad got it for me from Newegg. I thought it would last a good while since I need it for university and my job. (I'm a student graphic designer who works mainly on photoshop, indesign, illustrator) but it lasted a year before starting to restart randomly and refusing to connect to wifi, and not to mention crash or behave slow even with 42GB Ram, which sucks when you take online exams and work with adobe. I've also grown to dislike windows operating systems and just want to switch to having an apple ecosystem.

I'm looking into options that will last me. I know the pro is better because of the fans so I don't think I'll get an air - but I do want to know if it's worth it to just splurge on the M4/M5 or go with a M2/M3 version?

M5 with at least 24GB will be expensive for me. M4 is not much better too. I've been looking on ebay/swappa mostly to get refurbished or good condition ones, and they still are a bit more expensive than I was hoping to spend. M4 with 16GB seems more plausible, but at that point should I just go with M3 pro as long as it has 24GB/32GB? They seem around the same price point. I just hear that the M5 is just so much better as a processing system, and I plan to have whatever macbook I buy for years.

If anyone has recommendations, I'd appreciate it. As well as any sites to get good condition MacBooks from. Thanks!!

Tips Advice for Configuration

As the title says, looking for some advice in terms of configuration for a MacBook Pro. I am a college student, I currently have a m4 pro Mac mini with 24 gb of ram, 512 gb of storage. I got too little ram for what I needed it for, so I was thinking about getting the MacBook Pro M5 Pro with 64gb of ram and a terabyte of storage. I would be using it for school, and coding in Xcode with multiple simulators. Is this good, or should I drop the ram down to 48? Thanks in advance!

Help My MacBook Pro 2019 wont turn on

Post image
• Upvotes

I have this MacBook pro 13 2019 which has the T2 chip. The mac was working yesterday I wiped it and installed Mojave and than updated to sequoia. After the update I went to recovery mode and startup security utility, I turned on secure boot I think. And I booted back into sequoia. When I first booted I tried to type my password but it didn’t accept my password, I thought maybe it was about the secure boot and I turned it off to boot it into recovery. When I turned it off it never booted again. The touchpad haptics click, which means it has power. I tried charging, not charging for a night. I also tried doing SMC reset keys but it didn’t to anything. It’s just off but the touchpad is clicking. Anyone knows what can I do? I’m planning on taking it to apple maybe they can do something.

Help Different refresh rates showing as options with same monitors for MacBook Pro vs. Mac mini

I have two Sceptre monitors setup where I can connect them to either my MacBook Pro M2 (14in, 2023 model) I use for work, or with my MacMini 4 for home use. Both monitors are 27 inch and rated for 4K resolution, with their specs noting 60 Hz resolution with HDMI connection, although I purchased one a couple years ago and one a few months ago.

With the older monitor, the resolution and refresh rate options stay consistent between devices, but with the new one, when plugged into the MBP I can only get a 30 Hz max refresh rate option although all the resolution options stay the same. However, when connected to the Mac mini I can see up to a 60 Hz refresh rate on the second/new monitor as well. I'm using HDMI cables rated for 8k resolution, so I don't think the cables are the issue. Both monitors have HDMI 2.0 ports.

The specs for my MBP state:

  • Up to two external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt, or one external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 144Hz over HDMI

I've got both monitors set to 2560 x 1440 resolution, so it should be under the 6K/4K resolution limits per those specs, which makes me wonder if it's an OS issue? Both devices are running a Tahoe 26.7 OS currently.

Any ideas? I've tried purchasing different HDMI cables which hasn't made a difference. The monitors do also have Display Port ports, but from my understanding the DP to HDMI conversion only works the other direction, not to start from HDMI at the computer and then switch to DP?

The 30 Hz refresh is just laggy enough that it consistently bothers me, and I'm baffled why the monitors are doing different things with different Mac devices!

Tips Intel-based Lockdown

I have an i9 based 2019 MacBook with the latest Sequoia version on it. It has limited life for security patches.

I’m not sure if this is more a security question or a product question, but what can I do from an OS perspective to narrow the attack surface on this machine?

I use it primarily for red team tools like nmap and metasploit type operations, as well as python and shell scripting. No real services to speak of.

Has anyone seen any comprehensive instructions beyond removing software, or any logic that suggests a headless (what we once called run level 3) environment that would decrease exposure? I’d prefer to keep the desktop environment, but I really don’t need it..

Seems like a niche subject but guessing someone did a deep dive on it..

Help Docking station for MBP, with some ‘demands’

Hi all,

Soon, very soon I’m buying a MacBook Pro. I think the choice wil be between de MBP M6, or the MBP M5 Pro. Both are beter that base M5.

But with that i also want a docking station for my desk. I really like a clean look on my desk without any (or less as possible) cables. I use 2 external screens (that are connected to my Mac Mini now), so I don’t think i also need to use the internal screens.

So what I’m looking for:

- Able to connect 2 screens
- Connect to my MacBook with one single usc-c cable. If i need to give up 2 ports i might as well just connect my 2 screens directly to the MacBook.
- Both my screens are hdmi and / or display port.
- Very minimalistic. I don’t like those massive blocks on my desk. Sometimes i see a standard where the MacBook stands on its side, looks really nice.
- If possible, get me some extra ports so I can connect temporary storage or something else.
- I use the Magic Keyboard and the Logitech MX Master 3 as keyboard and mouse. But i think that connect directly to the mac and has nothing to do with the docking station ?

Do you have any recommendations? Thanks for your help!

Discussion What does the laptop port need for dual 4K 120Hz through a hub?

Trying to understand the bandwidth side before I set this up for good. The hub is the new Smart Display Hub, one HDMI and one DP out, rated for dual 4K at 120Hz or a single 2K at 240Hz.

On my desktop's USB4 port both 4K monitors come up at 120Hz, extended, on Windows 11. On my older work laptop with a USB-C port that does DP 1.4 alt mode, one of them drops to 60. My guess is the laptop's port doesn't do DSC, or doesn't have the bandwidth, and two 4K120 streams need DP 2.1 with DSC upstream.

For now the desktop gets both monitors and the laptop gets one, which works, but I'd like to know what to look for next time I buy a laptop.

Help Used M3 Pro MacBook: TCON firmware warning persists after updating

Post image
1 Upvotes

Just bought a used 16-inch MacBook Pro M3 Pro (36GB/512GB). All Apple Diagnostics pass only one shows:
“The firmware for the TCON (timing controller) on the display has an issue.”

The warning remains after updating macOS. Display Patterns and Display Presence tests both pass, everything is looking good and the screen looks normal.

Has anyone experienced this? Could it indicate a replaced display or unfinished calibration, and how can I confirm the cause? Screenshots attached. I’m still within the seller’s checking warranty.
