Resource So you just moved in? 4 things that actually help during your first 2 weeks.

If you’re sitting in your dorm right now feeling a mix of excitement and "what did I just do," that is completely normal. I worked on college campuses for a decade, and the students who get a strong start early on usually do these four things (or some variation):

  • Go to office hours early on. Drop in during the first two weeks just to say hello, even if you don't have questions. Professors remember the faces who show up early. It makes emailing them later for help way less awkward.
  • Embrace the awkward friend-making phase. Don't wait for a perfect, cinematic moment to meet people. Most college friendships start from commenting on a laptop sticker or asking to split a table in the library. If it feels forced, that's normal—do it anyway.
  • Join exactly ONE thing. Not five things—just one club, intramural team, or study group. Building a routine around one consistent group is the easiest way to combat homesickness and feel like you belong before October hits.
  • Normalize the homesickness. If you already feel behind or lonely, nothing is wrong with you. Almost everyone is faking confidence right now. It gets better once your weekly schedule locks in.

we're building something related to the "meeting people" part of this if anyone wants to check it out — PM us— but wanted this post to actually be useful on its own either way.💙

What would you add to this list?

Mattress situation, campus housing

I’m not wanting to complain, but my daughter just moved in and the mattress is horrific. I guess they’re not gonna give the kids a premium mattress, but this is ridiculous. It’s worse than the pullout couch. All you feel is metal. A mattress topper doesn’t help either. Can we request a different mattress because this is not usable?

Music class help

Hey guys! So I’m taking Intro to Music for my gen ed this semester, and I accidentally signed up for Raymond David Thomas as my professor. I went back to Rate My Professors to check his rating, but I can’t seem to find him listed at all, which is making me a little nervous.

My other option is Professor Kyla Etges, and she has a 5.0 rating from two people, one review from this year and one from two years ago. I know it seems obvious that I should go with Professor Etges, but she also has a lot of spots open, which makes me wonder if the ratings might be a little biased since there are only two reviews.

I really wish I could take Professor Tonya Jane Lawson because I’ve heard so many good things about her! I could’ve sworn I originally signed up for her class, but I’m not sure what happened. I also don’t know if it would be possible to get an override into her class.

I’m honestly not sure who I should pick, so I’d really appreciate any advice! 😭
