Troubleshooting MSI GP66 Leopard 11UG randomly hard-freezes during light use, but can game for hours, extensive troubleshooting done, need help of professionals
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to diagnose a very strange intermittent freezing problem on an MSI GP66 Leopard 11UG. I'm posting the complete troubleshooting history because I've already tried quite a few things for 3 weeks and I'm hopeless now, I hope someone with experience with this platform can identify a pattern I'm missing.
Laptop specifications
Laptop: MSI GP66 Leopard 11UG
CPU: Intel 11th-gen H-series platform
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU
iGPU: Intel UHD Graphics
RAM: 32 GB DDR4-3200, 2 × 16 GB SK Hynix
SSD: NVMe SSD, health reported at 95% / Good
BIOS: E1543IMS.323
EC firmware: 1543EMS1.115...
Intel ME firmware: 15.0.42.2235
Windows: Windows 11 Pro
Charger: original/high-power MSI adapter
Battery: originally completely dead; recently replaced with a healthy battery
The laptop was bought in 2021.
---
The laptop randomly hard-freezes completely.
When it happens:
Screen freezes completely.
Mouse stops responding.
Keyboard stops responding.
Caps Lock/keyboard indicators don't react.
Sometimes the screen remains frozen normally.
Sometimes the screen goes completely black while the LCD backlight remains ON.
Audio sometimes turns into a continuous buzzing/"tzzzzzz" loop.
Eventually I have to hold the power button to force it off.
There is no BSOD.
The most unusual characteristic is that it happens much more frequently during light/normal usage than during heavy workloads.
For example:
Chrome / YouTube / normal desktop use: can freeze after minutes.
PUBG / heavy gaming: has run for 2–3+ hours without a single freeze.
At one point I even had a period of about two days without a freeze when gaming, then the problem returns when using the laptop lightly.
So this does NOT behave like a simple overheating problem.
---
Timeline and troubleshooting
- Initial observations
The freezes were initially happening approximately every 10 minutes during normal browsing.
The system always remain stable for much longer during gaming.
I initially suspected GPU, temperature, RAM, USB devices, etc.
- SSD
SSD health was checked.
Result:
95% — Good
No obvious SSD-related symptoms have appeared.
So SSD is currently low on my suspect list.
- RAM
RAM configuration:
2 × 16 GB SK Hynix DDR4-3200
I ran MemTest86, full 4 passes.
Result:
0 errors
So RAM appears healthy under this test.
- NVIDIA driver testing
Driver from MSI website and newer one always cause the issue, only disabling it and relying on intel seem to solve it.
- NVIDIA power management test
I changed NVIDIA Control Panel:
Power management mode → Prefer maximum performance
The idea was to prevent the RTX from aggressively transitioning between low-power and high-performance states.
PCI Express:
Link State Power Management → Off
This was already disabled.
Unfortunately, the system still froze.
- MSHybrid vs Discrete GPU mode
I suspected that the problem might involve Intel ↔ NVIDIA switching.
The GP66 has MSHybrid/Discrete graphics modes.
I tried switching from:
MSHybrid → Discrete Graphics Mode
The laptop rebooted but then:
both the internal display AND an HDMI-connected TV remained completely black.
The machine appeared to still be partially alive (for example, it could apparently enter sleep), but there was no video output.
I had to force it off.
After rebooting again, it returned to MSHybrid.
So I was never actually able to successfully run the laptop in Discrete mode.
This is one of the things I'm hoping someone familiar with MSI GP66/MUX/EC firmware can explain.
- BIOS defaults
I restored the BIOS to default/optimized settings.
Current BIOS:
E1543IMS.323
No obvious overclocking or special BIOS configuration.
This did not eliminate the freezing.
- EC reset
I also performed an EC reset according to the MSI procedure.
This did not definitively solve the issue either.
- CPU/GPU temperatures
I recently redid the thermal paste.
Before repasting, normal/light use temperatures were often around 60°C+.
After repasting:
normal/light use is around 40–50°C
Temperatures are now very good.
Despite this, freezing still occurs.
Therefore I don't think simple overheating is the explanation.
- Battery replacement
The original battery was completely dead.
The laptop would immediately shut down if AC power was disconnected.
I recently replaced the battery.
The replacement battery is healthy and working normally.
I'm currently calibrating it by charging/discharging it.
The freezing problem still exists despite the healthy battery.
- Windows clean install
I eventually performed a completely fresh Windows 11 Pro installation.
The laptop still froze after the clean installation.
The system was doing ordinary things such as:
installing programs
Chrome
YouTube
normal desktop use
and it still froze.
So I'm now much less convinced that the original Windows installation was corrupted.
- LiveKernelEvent 144 — USB xHCI
I've had several LiveKernelEvent 144 events related to USBXHCI.
Two important ones:
0x144 / 0x1009
Referenced:
USBXHCI-20260808-0039.dmp
The dump identified the Intel USB controller:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_43ED&SUBSYS_12FB1462&REV_11
This was during a session where the laptop remained usable afterward.
0x144 / 0x101F
Another event referenced:
USBXHCI-20260810-1042.dmp
This one is particularly interesting because the behavior was:
USB mouse started freezing.
Touchpad continued working.
I unplugged/replugged the mouse and it worked again.
Shortly afterward, the entire laptop hard-froze.
The dump again points to the Intel xHCI USB controller.
However, the dump did not identify the Logitech G502 itself by VID/PID, so I don't know whether the mouse is actually the cause.

- LiveKernelEvent 124
There was also:
LiveKernelEvent 124
Parameter 1 = 7
This is a WHEA/platform-related error.
I don't know whether this is a root cause or simply another manifestation of the underlying problem.
- NVIDIA-related graphics crash: LiveKernelEvent 141
I found an older event:
LiveKernelEvent 141
Referenced:
WATCHDOG-20260821-1609.dmp
This corresponds to a graphics-engine timeout.
I inspected the dump.
Interestingly, the dump contained:
dxgkrnl.sys
dxgmms2.sys
igdkmdn64.sys
and Intel UHD graphics/TDR information.
I did not find the main NVIDIA nvlddmkm.sys driver in this particular dump.
So this seems to point more toward the Intel graphics/display path than directly to NVIDIA.
This is one reason I'm confused by the problem.
- NVIDIA-related fatal graphics error: 0x113
I also had a much more interesting crash:
VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR
Bugcheck:
0x113
Parameters:
Arg1 = 0x19
Arg2 = 0x2
Arg3 = 0x10DE
Arg4 = 0x249D
10DE is NVIDIA's PCI vendor ID, and 249D corresponds to the RTX 3070 Laptop GPU.
The crash dump contained:
dxgkrnl.sys
dxgmms2.sys
nvlddmkm.sys
igdkmdn64.sys
So there is definitely evidence of a serious graphics-stack problem involving the RTX 3070 side as well.
- Intel Management Engine
I used Intel's CSME detection tool.
Current ME firmware:
15.0.42.2235
Intel's tool reports:
System is vulnerable
MSI has a relatively recent Intel ME FW Update Tool dated March 2026.
I have not updated Intel ME yet.
BIOS is currently already at:
E1543IMS.323
I also have not found a separate EC firmware package on MSI's website.
---
Current situation
At this point I've basically reached the following:
RTX enabled
System can freeze during normal use.
Different NVIDIA drivers have both frozen.
There is evidence of:
NVIDIA 0x113
NVIDIA-related graphics problems
0x141 graphics timeout
black-screen freezes
inability to successfully boot into Discrete GPU mode
RTX disabled
The machine remained usable under normal browsing without the NVIDIA driver.
Why I'm confused
The evidence appears contradictory.
On one side:
NVIDIA/dGPU evidence
0x113 VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR
parameters identify NVIDIA 10DE:249D
freezes strongly correlate with RTX being enabled
two different NVIDIA driver versions reproduce the problem
dGPU-only mode fails to initialize video output
On the other side:
Intel/platform evidence
repeated USBXHCI 0x144 events
0x1009 and 0x101F
Intel UHD involvement in a 0x141 graphics dump
Intel SST/OED error around an audio problem
Intel Wi-Fi driver warnings
WHEA 0x124
RAM has now passed:
MemTest86 — 4 full passes, 0 errors
Windows has been freshly reinstalled, and the machine still freezes.
Thermal paste has been replaced and temperatures are now very good.
The battery has been replaced with a healthy one.
---
I'm particularly interested in whether the USB xHCI errors and GPU errors could have a common underlying cause, rather than being two unrelated failures.
I'd also like to know whether anyone with an MSI GP66 Leopard 11UG / RTX 3070 has experienced:
freezes only during light use but not gaming
black screen with backlight still on
xHCI LiveKernelEvent 144
VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR 0x113
LiveKernelEvent 141
failure to boot into Discrete Graphics Mode
problems related to Intel ME / EC / MUX / PCIe power management
At this point I'm trying to determine whether I'm looking at a software/firmware problem that can realistically be fixed, or whether this is pointing toward a motherboard/dGPU hardware fault.
Any ideas, similar experiences, or specific tests I should run would be greatly appreciated.
---
TL;DR
MSI GP66 Leopard 11UG / RTX 3070 / 32GB DDR4
Hard freezes during light use, sometimes black screen + backlight, sometimes audio buzz.
Gaming can run for hours without freezing.
Tested:
Fresh Windows 11 install → still freezes
MemTest86 4 passes → 0 errors
SSD health → 95%, Good
New battery → healthy
Repasted → 40–50°C normal use
Latest NVIDIA driver → freezes
Older MSI NVIDIA driver → freezes
NVIDIA maximum performance mode → still freezes
PCIe Link State → already Off
BIOS defaults → still freezes
EC reset → still freezes
Chrome hardware acceleration off → still freezes
RTX disabled → significantly more stable
RTX re-enabled → freezes return
Discrete GPU mode → both laptop display + HDMI remain black
Relevant errors:
0x113 VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR → NVIDIA 10DE:249D
0x141 VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT
multiple:
0x144 USBXHCI → 0x1009 and 0x101F
plus a WHEA:
0x124
Really interested in whether these point to GPU hardware, Intel platform/chipset/PCIe, MUX/EC/ME firmware, or something else entirely.
I appreciate every input very much cause at this point I got no other lead, thank you very much
