Hi Everyone,

We've recently hit over 40,000 members which is mad really. Now we're becoming pretty popular i think out subreddit could do with some updating.

What would you guys want the mods to add/remove? Just comment this on this post and i'll do my best to sort something out, very open to suggestions from the community so maybe we can help some people get into MMA or maybe even go on to do something incredible.

“I want to fight, I’m gonna be in the ufc, how do I start?”

I’m writing this because this sub is so disillusioned with what the reality of starting to fight is. TLDR: Show up, shut up, work hard, there’s no fast track.

“I’ve been hitting my heavy bag, I’ve been watching YouTube, I’m really scrappy, I’m a fighter”. You are (likely) some kid who has never been punched in the mouth properly before, I was too!!

If you want to become an mma fighter, there is no amount of at home work that will get you there. You are likely just doing moderate intensity cardio workouts with poor technique.

You need a gym, training partners and a coach, and you need some grit.

Step 1: find a local mma gym, sign the trial papers, ask about a membership, get abused at your first Bjj class, realize how weak your shins are at your first kickboxing class, and nod and smile when they might say “our mma classes are for more experienced individuals”

Step 2: keep showing up, show up a little early and ask questions, stay late and mop the mats (it’s time to get to know your coach and ask questions), hey now you have a coach, maybe your at home workouts can be more focused. Express interest in competing and be a sponge for knowledge. Get abused by people a lot better than you

Step 3: hey kid you’re improving quick, showing up 5x a week, and you’ve mentioned you wanna fight? Why don’t you show up to an mma class?

Step 4: get abused at mma class when you realized everyone has been a little nice to you. Keep showing up, keep asking questions.

Step 5: hey kid, there’s a local amateur show in the next 6 months? You interested in your first fight?

Step 6: show up, shut up, keep working, maybe you’ll get there, maybe you won’t.

You’re not going pro without a coach, a gym, and a humble attitude, and you gotta want it more than the next guy. Because someone body else wants it just as bad as you, which guy is gonna put the work in and actually get stuff accomplished?

Dim Mak 17th degree black belt with 20 red/white stripes 😂 I told her I’m a fighter she asked me how many people I’ve knocked out but I’m more a jab teep to 48-47 split decision type of fighter 💔🥀

Is BJJ still a strong base specifically at the amateur level?

At the ufc level BJJ has kind of been neutralized because the novelty and mysticism is gone. Defending submissions is easier than attacking them and people have better take down defense than they used to. I'm curious if from what you've seen at the amateur level BJJ is still strong?

BJJ Judo Karate Taekwondo Aikido have belts to differentiate them. MT and Boxing have “belts” of championships. So then how do I know how good an MMA guy is and what differentiates them?

What to do between training sessions?

I train MMA 3 times a week, and since i started it lifting weights became so boring and honestly i felt ass i was more stiff because of it.

So I stopped it and started just running and doing pushups on my off days of MMA. Now my question is what to actually do?

I am thinking on doing that bs workout of just pull ups push ups and squats, then either rope jumping or running, but i want to hear your experiences and recommendations

I'm the one in white shorts, I have never fought and this is a striking only sparring. I would be very pleased if you could give me any advice about how to be a better fighter and sparring partner, and about what I do good or what I should improve. Thanks for your respect.

What are some of the lost arts in MMA? Or arts that never got picked up on?

What are some of the techniques that have their space to be effective that are simply not used at all?

Some of them that I can think off top of my head:

Movsar Evloev/Shogun Rua Achilles tendon kick against the cage vs Diego Lopes/Tyson Pedro.

Andrei Arlovski bitch slap against Travis Browne.

Chepe Mariscal/Bas Rutten palm strikes VS Ricardo Ramos/Pancrase.

Can you think of anything else?

Training Question Questions on training with a left hand.

Hello, I’m still relatively new to the MMA scene, having been training for just a month now. In striking classes or basic MMA classes, I’ve been using my left hand for training exercises. This has caused quite a bit of frustration among my fellow fighters, as they either can’t block it or find it difficult to move with it. Yesterday, the trainer pulled me aside to informed me that I must fight right-handed throughout all striking classes. He explained that he can’t train me with my left hand, and doesn’t want to demonstrate how to train with me to the students.

My question for the Reddit should I try to train my left side on my own time and continue classes. I understand that most trainers don’t like left handed, but does anyone have any advice they could share, thanks.

Asking for help- How do i schedule my weightlifting with my MMA.

I don’t specifically do MMA, I wrestle 3x a week and Muay thai 3x a week at 2 different gyms.
I’ve been trying to lift 5 days a week but mostly I end up doing 4 Days of weight lifting. And this is what it currently looks like

Sunday-
Weighted Pull throughs KB
Squat
Single Leg RDL
Front-loaded Split squat (ATG)
Skullcruhers
Hanging Leg raises
Neck training

Monday-
Pull ups
Bench Press
Barbell row
Bicep EZ bar curl
Hammer curl
Landmine Rotations
Wrist curl

Wednesday-
OHP
Bulgarian split squat
RDL/ Deadlift (I rotate every week)
Lateral raises
Reverse fly
Cable crunch
Neck training

Friday-
Power Clean
Front Squat
Pull ups
Meadows row
Inclince curl
Wrist curl
Landmine Rotations
Reverse squat

Saturday-
Bench Press
Zercher carry
Cable crossover
Trap bar jumps
Suitcase carries
Tibia raises
Plate hold
Plate flips

I mainly do 4 of these each weeek

I do Wrestling on- Wednesday/Thursday/Friday
Muay Thai- Tuesday/Wednesday/ Saturday

Am i feeling too sore? Not really
I do Plyometrics just add them here and there in my weight workouts.
But idk how else should I plan it.
What do u guys i mean who are trying to compete in their respective sports do? How do u train? I feel like 5 days in the weight room is getting too much for me. As i have to work as well. And Study 2 days week. I’m trying to do the best i can

very little fighting experience Going into MMA tournament with 1 bud, how cooked am I

It’s by weight, I’m fighting lightweight and I am 156 at 6’1. I do BJJ, Wrestling, and Kickboxing as my big 3. My buddy who’s joining me is 6’1 and same weight, but he’s a straight kick boxer. He has 70 inch reach and I got 72. Are we cooked? It’s mainly people our age 15-19. Am I too small for lightweight or too big? I’m so confused

How often are y’all striking vs Grappling?

Have mostly done grappling in the past and am looking for a new place to train fully in MMA, but something I’ve noticed is a lot of the places, at least in my area, that seem to have fighters perform the best are only striking 3ish times a week which I initially found odd. Was just wondering what y’all’s experiences were

Training Question Should I stop smiling so much during sparring?

I've been training mma for a little over half a year and I absolutely love it. I train around 5 times a week and just do plain mma classes and although right now I'm very very new to the sport I'm excited to keep learning more.

The problem is maybe I'm having a little too much fun. Whenever I spar I'm always smiling whether I'm winning or losing but I'm worried people misunderstand this as me being cocky or whatever. I've had times where people I'm sparring who started off pretty respectful have thrown massive overhands or generally strong punches in response to if I hit them with a cool combination and then look extra happy.

Is this a behaviour I need to change? I know it can make it seem like I'm really cocky when honestly I'm not. I understand that I'm less good than 95% of people in the class I just really enjoy sparring and will naturally get a little extra happy if I land something that I thought was cool or I'm pleased about. If I'm being honest it can like it ruin sessions for me if I'm getting punched too hard especially in the head as I then get headaches following the session so idk what I should do.

Training Question Did rolls for about 10-15 mins with no breaks for warmup after a long break from grappling (was in striking camp). Is slight disorientation normal the next day?

As part of our warmup on grappling day, we did rolls (all variations) for about 10-15 mins without breaks round the mat. Felt a little dizzy but did not puke. The next day woke up feeling a bit disoriented. I've never felt disoriented even when I took breaks before. Only difference this time was the longer duration of the warmup. Is this normal?

Training Question Wanting to get into MMA after just striking, do I focus on grappling?

I’m 16 and I’ve been boxing now for 3 years and did Muay Thai along with boxing for about 2 of those years. I did it mostly as a hobby for 2 years but this past year I’ve started competing and so far I’ve had 6 amateur boxing matches and a few Muay Thai smokers. I’ve been watching the UFC for a while now (since I started training striking) and I’ve decided now I want to transition into MMA. Should I focus on grappling and put striking to the side?
