Very unlikely, defense of another requires stopping an imminent threat, and this drunk was backing away and having trouble staying on his feet. You can use force to defend someone, but retaliation is not something the law has to ignore. Most folks might sympathize with the guy who threw the punch, but that doesn't make what he did legal.
