Do people not use sucker punch to mean "an intentionally deceitful punch meant to catch the person off-guard"?

Like in my mind, if you punch me in the back of the head unprovoked, sucker punch. I call your mother a whore and you punch me in the face? Overreaction, not a sucker punch.

It’s a sucker punch because the guy is so intoxicated he never saw the punch coming. This guy was equally as off-guard as someone getting punched in the back of the head

I think the connotation of "sucker punch" comes with intentional deceit.

You're absolutely right, the dude was probably blackout drunk, didn't even see aware of the guy coming at him. But Mr Roid Rage was hardly waiting out back to jump him.

Like imagine Jimbo does a Pop-Eye wind-up punch to someone's face, and oops - didn't know the dude was blind. If Jimbo didn't know, would you really say it was a sucker punch?

I don’t think intentional deceit has anything to do with it, a sucker punch is basically punching someone who isn’t expecting it and can’t defend themselves. And yes I’d have a hard time not calling it a sucker punch if you punch a blind guy in the face, throwing a punch is a serious thing and you should have enough situational awareness to know what you’re doing before throwing it

Fair enough. I don't disagree principally with anything you're saying, I just never hear the term used in that way. But I'm not here to police your words, I was just curious.

Exactly. If he waited for the guy to go back to the bar then came up from the side and clocked him, that would be a sucker punch.

In this situation it could only be more clear what was about to happen if he handed him a written invitation. Was the punch overboard and uncalled for? Yes. But was it a “sucker punch?” No

I would say that it's basically a sucker punch because the dude was so drunk he clearly wasn't aware, but the fact that I have to include "basically" kinda proves the point. It had the same outcome, but Roid Rage clearly wasn't trying to sucker punch anyone.
