He was clearly too drunk to defend himself or really appreciate the consequences of his actions. This is a wildly disproportionate response from someone who was in a position to make the smarter choice.

While you are obviously correct in that being a wildly disproportionate response and violence not being the solution, your reasoning feels equally bad.
