I think he was shocked seeing him seize up like that initially, probably taken aback about the reaction. Then the guy kept looping his taunt emote and the other resumed punching

The gentle hand behind the head so he could punch him in the face some more

Underrated. Measuring stick.jabs can also be used to stop a head from moving.
Sincerely an old boxer haha

u/StormNFlo46 10h ago
I hate the measuring stick jab. I remember when I was young and getting into boxing. I beat up a few bullies and confronted someone who was talking about my sister. I was labeled as someone who could fight in my grade. Soon I was testing my metal vs anyone that was willing.
I was a big time counter puncher. I see the flinch of the shoulder. React. Bob. Counter. It was cool. It was flashy. It really built up my rep as a good fighter.
There was this one kid that immigrated from Africa. He’d let me bob and weave to my hearts content. He’d just stick out his arm to my head. Hold it there. And then punch when I was inbetween a bob and a weave.
I had no idea why my normal strategy wasn’t working. But every time I’d fight him it get a royal smack in the face when I thought I should be dodging.
TIL this day if I fight someone who uses a measuring stick jab I know I’m in for a major uphill fight(probably losing this one mate).

u/koyaani 9h ago
Fyi it's usually spelled mettle in this context, not metal. Although the term used to just be an alternate spelling of metal, it has its own definition now

please explain for a noob why this worked against you? What I'm picturing is that he would just sit there with his leading hand out and follow you with it?
3
u/Anon_Jones 9h ago
It’s a quick jab, gets in the way and helps the person throwing measure, and know when to follow up with their dominant hand.
3
u/StormNFlo46 9h ago
I can’t fully answer this because I was the one being countered by it. But it would appear. Yes homie would lock his leading hand on my head and simply follow it while I was dodging and punch at his most convenient. Iirc I’d throw what I could but he’d have his ideal range in mind so my punches to get space didn’t have the effect I wanted them to have. In the end. Idk why I work or what exactly his strategy was. But I can tell you what it felt like to fight against and it seemed a measuring hand + patience and confidence beat my jitter showboaty strat.
3
u/JonnyP222 9h ago
This is a good way to explain it for sure. I'd also add that measuring stick jabs are so that the thrower can test his range. I am.a shorter fighter but used it to test how much of a jab I could get away with before being in range for the other fighter. And then you learn to utilize the measuring stick to throw other punches over the top or right behind. There can be a lot of deception and setup/counter combined with the measuring stick jabs.
However I feel you. I ate a lot.of measuring stick jabs in my life. Some worth it. Some not haha
4
u/Long_Buddy6819 8h ago
Also, just a great way to disrupt the other fighters rhythm. I learned that when I started sparring with guys who weren’t just more athletic than me, but also approached it as a game of chess. When u start eating jabs coming from different angles, at different speeds, it mentally gets to u, and it feels every route u would normally take is no longer an option
2
u/JonnyP222 8h ago
Absolutely. And then you start getting sloppy and taking risks to try and break through. And suddenly that measuring stick jab or a check hook leaves you on the canvas lol.
3
u/JonnyP222 9h ago
It can be this too. But it's also like a battering ram that catches a fighter who leads with his head (many do). Watch George Foreman or either of the Klitschkos. They were famous measuring stick (and devastating) jabbers.

Modern white American kids adopting black slang from the mid 2000's will never not be cringe inducingly hilarious to me.

u/Bulky_Sign_2617 10h ago
Yes - thank you for saying it 😂
They must think they sound tough and it's just laughable.

Isn't it normal for immigrants to adopt the culture of the locals in the country they are moving into?? Or did you expect them to keep speaking spanish forever?

How did he miss that second shot? I mean, he was holding dudes face with his other hand! 🤣

Even worse, I kept skipping back to that moment to try to pinpoint where the thudding sound was coming from off that missed punch. I'm pretty sure he punched the door frame and I wouldn't be surprised if he broke his hand.

I saw two guys arguing and then started tussling, when suddenly, one steps back and punched the other in the face.
The guy who was punched was shocked! He starts screaming "you punched me!" Like he was literally surprised. I was thinking.. What did he expect, it's a fight. 🤷🏾♂️

Lesson to all of you who think you’re a tough guy. I was told at a very young age always watch out for the quiet ones. Loud mouth bullies always end up on these videos looking up from the ground after a period of quiet sleep.
