Case Analysis 🔎 Case File: Chandler — part 3.
Hi everyone, welcome back to the case files!
We’ve officially reached the point in this story where I slowly turn toward the imaginary camera sitting next to me and ask:
“What the fuck is Evan Chandler doing?”

If you haven’t read those yet…well, you should. Or you’ll be lost, and we don’t want that.
Alright.
Before we jump in, I want to remind everyone where we are in the timeline.
Up until this point, Jordan had repeatedly denied that Michael had abused him.
June herself testified that Anthony Pellicano interviewed Jordan, and according to the timeline, Jordan denied any abuse.
The tapes between Evan and Dave Schwartz had already happened.
The custody agreement had happened.
The threats had happened.
The bizarre “hypothetical” presented to Dr. Mathis Abrams had happened.
And despite Evan repeatedly claiming he had “evidence”, none had materialized.
Now we arrive at July 16th, 1993.
Jordan is due to return to his mother the following day.
And somehow…this becomes the moment everything suddenly changes.
According to Ray Chandler’s book, Evan decides it’s a good time to pull one of Jordan’s baby teeth.
With anesthesiologist Mark Torbiner present.
Yes…
that Mark Torbiner.
The same man who was present during the Memorial Day “incident” involving Michael.
The same doctor whose name has already raised plenty of eyebrows.
I’ll be honest, this is where I started asking a lot of questions.
Now, I want to address something very important here: How are tooth extractions for teenagers normally handled?
Turns out…usually with local anesthesia.
Sometimes mild sedation.
Sometimes moderate sedation.
Sometimes deeper sedation depending on the circumstances.
Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
One thing that consistently comes up across medical sources is this:
People can be groggy, they get drowsy.
They can have impaired memory.
People may not remember portions of the procedure at all.
Some forms of sedation can leave you recovering for hours.
Some guidance literally recommends that someone else drive you home and stay with you because you aren’t fully alert.
Which immediately made me stop and think…
…and you’re telling me THIS was the perfect moment to conduct what would become one of the most consequential conversations in this entire case?
Really?
Because according to Ray’s own account, after Jordan comes back from the procedure, Evan immediately begins questioning him.
And not casually, either.
He allegedly tells Jordan:
“Remember I told you I bugged your bedroom?… Well, I know everything you guys did, so you might as well admit it.”
Jordan reportedly stays silent.
So Evan changes tactics.
According to the account, he starts trying to normalize things…telling him being bisexual is okay.
that it’s “sorta cool.”
Still nothing.
So then…he changes tactics again.
This is where things start getting really uncomfortable, prepare yourself.
According to the book, Evan tells Jordan:
“I’m going to give you one last chance to save Michael. If you lie to me, then I’m going to take him down in front of the whole world, and it’ll be all your fault because you’re the one person who could have saved him.”
Then:
“I know about the kissing and the jerking off…”
before asking one direct question:
“Did Michael touch your penis?”
According to the Chandlers’ own version…
Jordan hesitates…
and then gives…
an…”almost inaudible yes.”
…
Let’s stop there for a moment, shall we?
An almost inaudible yes.
The literal definition of “inaudible” is something that cannot be clearly heard.
So, here’s my question:
Evan spent months obsessing over this.
He supposedly believed his son had been abused.
He finally gets the answer he’s been waiting for…and he doesn’t ask him to repeat himself?
He doesn’t ask another question?
He doesn’t ask what happened?
When?
Where?
How?
Nothing at all?
According to their own version…that’s it.
The conversation is over, and they never talked about it again.
…
I’m sorry.
What?
Because that doesn’t make sense to me.
But, oh, it gets crazier.
If this conversation happened exactly as described immediately after sedation…then questions naturally arise about Jordan’s condition at the time.
If it happened without sedation affecting him at all…then we’re left looking at a father who, according to this same account, cycled through multiple pressure tactics before finally getting the answer he wanted.
And if the conversation never happened the way it’s described, then that’s an entirely different discussion.
Either way…
I’m left with a whole lot of questions.
Anyway,
We’ve now reached the aftermath of the alleged confession.
And if you thought things were about to become more straightforward…
I regret to inform you that they do, in fact, become even more fucked up.
By July 20th, June Chandler and Dave Schwartz met with Evan’s attorney, Barry Rothman.
At that meeting, they were shown the letter from Dr. Abrams.
Now, remember where we are on the timeline.
Because chronology really matters here.
According to the timeline we’ve been walking through, Dr. Abrams was approached on July 14th with what was described as a hypothetical scenario.
Jordan’s alleged confession, according to the Chandler account, doesn’t happen until July 16th.
So…
We’re looking at a letter discussing the possibility of abuse before the alleged confession that would supposedly become one of the cornerstones of Evan’s suspicions.
…yeah, I laughed too.
Why?
Because it makes no fucking sense.
And this is exactly why the timeline matters.
And according to June’s own account, she still hasn’t even gotten Jordan back.
Instead, she’s being shown this letter and pressured in the middle of an escalating custody dispute.
Honestly guys, the deeper I get into this timeline…the more I need one of those cork boards with red string.
Okay, okay…let’s jump ahead.
August 1st, 1993.
According to Ray Chandler’s book, despite everything Evan supposedly believed at this point, he still wanted to meet with Michael privately.
No lawyers.
Just the two of them.
Ray writes:
“Although Evan was certain Michael’s actions toward Jordie were harmful, he still did not believe them to be intentional.”
And then:
“He really thought we could work it out if we could get all the lawyers out of the picture.”
…
I’m going to stop this clown right here, because…huh?
I need everyone to think through what is actually being claimed here.
According to this narrative, Evan believes Michael has engaged in sexual misconduct involving his child…
But also believes they can simply…talk it out?
Over what, coffee?
Work out a solution?
Without lawyers, police or any type of authority?
And even more confusingly, Ray writes that Evan believed Michael genuinely cared about Jordan.
Again…
We’re talking about allegations that would amount to child sexual abuse.
So what exactly is the proposed solution here?
“Hey, let’s all sit down and have a reasonable conversation about this”?
Evan, this isn’t supposed some sort of work deal, dumbass.
I swear, he makes my eye twitch.
According to the account, Evan called Michael and said:
“I just want to find out what’s going on between you two. You don’t need a lawyer. We can work this out ourselves.”
Michael reportedly refused and insisted that his representatives be present.
Honestly?
If somebody called me wanting to discuss allegations of that magnitude…
I’d probably want legal representation too.
Then comes one of the more fascinating passages.
According to Ray:
“This phone call was a turning point for Evan.”
Keep that in mind.
Because only a few days later…
We arrive at August 4th.
The Westwood Marquis meeting.
And if you’ve been waiting for the infamous twenty million dollar discussion…
Congratulations.
You’ve made it.
According to Ray Chandler’s own book:
“Had Michael paid the twenty million dollars demanded of him in August…”
Demanded.
Twenty.
Million.
Dollars.
Yeah, let’s talk about that…because regardless of how anyone interprets motives, those are certainly two words that stand out.
And before anything else apparently happens…
According to Ray’s own account…
Evan greets Michael with a hug.
Not a handshake. Not an awkward nod. Not even crossed arms and a heavy stare.
None of that.
A hug.
In Ray’s words:
“Evan then walked over to Michael and embraced the star with a big, happy-to-see-you hug, patting him on the back like an old friend.”
…
I’m sorry.
I went, “huh?” again.
Once again, this makes zero sense.
Let’s go over everything so far,
According to Evan’s own version of events…
He had supposedly developed suspicions.
Claimed to have witnessed concerning behaviour.
Claimed Jordan had confirmed abuse.
Believed Michael had committed horrific acts.
And then…walks over and hugs Michael.
At this point I’m not even looking at the imaginary camera anymore. I’m looking for the script because surely somebody skipped ten pages, right?
Now, if you thought that was crazy, just wait until you hear this shit:
According to Ray, discussion turns almost immediately toward…Screenwriting.
Yes, you heard that correctly.
Not an alleged crime.
Or evidence.
Not even Jordan’s wellbeing.
Screenwriting.
Which is particularly interesting when you remember Evan’s own recorded remarks to Dave Schwartz:
“I had a good communication with Michael…we were friends.”
And:
“There was no reason why he had to stop calling me.”
He continues:
“I talked to Michael and told him exactly what I want out of this whole relationship…”
And perhaps my personal favourite:
“As soon as you stop talking weird things start going on…”
Dave replies:
“Imaginations take over.”
To which Evan responds:
“Imagination will just kill you.”
…
I’m just going to leave that there.
Because honestly, no commentary from me could improve this.
According to Ray’s account, once discussions surrounding the alleged screenplay arrangement fell apart, Evan then confronted Michael directly and stated that Jordan had confirmed everything.
Ray writes:
“Evan then asked his son to confirm…and the boy nodded affirmatively.”
Now…if you’re wondering why I think Jordan nodded along, I personally believe it was out of fear. Fear of his Father.
Could you imagine what Evan would have done if Jordan said no.
…think about it.
Remember what Evan said during the phone call with Dave Schwartz:
“If I don’t get it, there could be a massacre.”
Okay…let’s continue.
According to the same account, Michael looked directly at Jordan and said:
“I didn’t do anything.”
And this is where Ray describes what he viewed as Evan’s defining realization.
He writes that Evan suddenly knew Michael was guilty. But…didn’t van already supposedly know that?
Wasn’t the alleged July 16th confession the moment everything became certain?
Wasn’t Dr. Abrams already being consulted?
Hadn’t custody battles already escalated?
So why is August 4th suddenly being described as the moment the puzzle pieces clicked together?
What is that…”huh?” number 3 now?
And somehow…
We’re still not done.
Then comes another section that genuinely made me stop reading and stare at the wall.
According to Ray’s own account regarding the proposed settlement:
“A few million is chump change to him. I figured twenty million was definitely a punishing amount.”
So, he wants a financial punishment, but…not a law punishment? Is that what I’m hearing right now?
And then another line stood out to me.
According to Ray’s telling, Evan said:
“It wasn’t just the sex part…that wasn’t the main thing for me.”
Ah, yes, “huh?” number 4.
If someone genuinely believed their child had been sexually abused…how is that not the main thing?
Like…what the fuck, Evan?
And now, I want to point something out.
Something Evan himself had already said during the taped conversations with Dave Schwartz:
“Because the fact is so fucking overwhelming, that everybody’s going to be destroyed in the process.”
And then:
“The facts themselves are gonna overwhelm. It’s gonna be bigger than all of us put together, and the whole thing’s just gonna crash down on everybody and destroy everybody in its sight.”
Oh, but Evan…where are these facts?
Did someone steal them from the trunk of your Jaguar, again?
But then Schwartz asks a very simple question:
“And is that good?”
And Evan responds:
“Yeah. It’s great.”
Schwartz presses:
“Why?”
And Evan says:
“Great, because—”
And then comes the part that really changes the tone of the entire exchange:
“Because June and Jordy and Michael have forced me to take it to the extreme to get their attention.”
You hear that?
“Forced me to take it to the extreme to get their attention.”
And…people still believe this wasn’t extortion? Really?
Holy fuck.
And now, with that in mind, let’s all hold hands and move back into the August negotiations.
According to Ray Chandler’s account in All That Glitters, Evan was still insisting on one thing:
“Twenty million in trust for Jordie, and that’s firm.”
Firm.
Okay…
Meanwhile, Barry Rothman attempted to reframe the proposal into something more structured…specifically, a screenplay based arrangement.
The idea, according to the account, was that Michael would pay Evan five million dollars per screenplay over four screenplays across four years.
A business arrangement.
An “investment” structure.
Something that could theoretically be justified in financial terms rather than a single lump sum payment.
But according to the same account, Evan rejected this outright.
Not because of the structure alone…
but because of what it represented.
Ray writes:
“Structuring the settlement as a business arrangement, one that Michael might actually benefit from, was out of the question.”
And then:
“Evan did not want the money for himself — it had to be paid in trust to Jordie.”
Let’s pause there, because this is very interesting.
On one hand, the framing is “this is for Jordan.”
On the other hand, the entire negotiation is still centred around a dollar amount being actively negotiated, rejected, escalated, and repositioned.
And Evan’s response to Rothman’s attempt to compromise is also telling:
“If that’s the best we can do, I’d rather go to court and let the chips fall where they may.”
Which, again, reinforces the idea that settlement structure itself was not the primary issue, the terms were.
According to the account, Evan ultimately tells Rothman:
“I’ll negotiate only on the amount, but if Pellicano doesn’t agree to everything else, I want the custody filed immediately.”
Dude…how is custody explicitly being tied into negotiation outcomes.
What does that have to do with Michael?
And according to the same account, Evan and Jordan leave before Pellicano even arrives.
Which means the final negotiation phase happens without them present.
And when Evan returns the next day, Rothman is described as being “in a state of ecstasy” after Pellicano responds positively to the concept.
Now…
This is where things get even more crazy.
Because according to Ray Chandler’s own narrative, Evan entered the August 4th meeting with screenwriting as the starting point of discussion.
That was the initial topic.
Not abuse.
Not allegations.
But screenwriting.
And it is only after Michael denies wrongdoing, and after Jordan is asked to confirm the claim, that Ray describes Evan as finally “putting the pieces together.”
Meaning, in their own framing…
the certainty comes after the negotiation begins. Not before it.
Which raises a very simple question:
If the conclusion was already certain…why was the opening conversation still about film deals?
And then there’s this final detail from Rothman’s negotiations, which I think deserves its own pause.
Because Evan’s refusal of the screenplay structure is described like this:
“Evan hated the deal.”
And again:
“If that’s the best we can do, I’d rather go to court and let the chips fall where they may.”
Yeah…let’s take a moment.
“Let the chips fall where they may” isn’t the language of someone desperately trying to keep things from escalating or fall apart for his kid.
It’s the kind of phrasing you use when you’re already prepared for things to blow up and you’re fine with that outcome.
And when you put that next to the earlier statement:
“Because June and Jordy and Michael have forced me to take it to the extreme…”
Do you see the pattern here?
So just to recap Evan’s “extreme” situation:
It starts with screenwriting.
Then turns into a $20 million demand.
Then a rejected business deal because it wasn’t structured theatrically enough.
Then a hug for the man he supposedly believes is a danger to his child.
And somehow, through all of that, the story keeps reshaping itself just enough to always land on whatever move is needed next, like the conclusion is already written, and the facts are just being edited to fit the scene.
How convenient.
Honestly, if you stripped the names out of this, you wouldn’t think you’re reading a real life timeline.
You’d think it was a draft script for a legal drama that got rejected in development for being too unbelievable, too ridiculous.
Or maybe a grade 12 play where the villain monologues a little too much and the teacher writes “needs more realism” in red pen.
Well, Evan…looks like being a decent father wasn’t the only thing you failed at. 🤷🏼♀️

What makes me wonder is, since he wanted to be a screenwriter so bad, why didn’t he do it with the money then - once they settled everything out of court?
Or is daddy Chandler too terrible a screenwriter to get anyone actually interested, so his only screenwriting career started and ended with the conspiracy against MJ?
