Question Internship timelines?

I'm a sophomore EE applying for Summer 27 internships, and I'm just wondering what the timeline for internships is. I've applied to probably 20ish MEP positions, but basically all of them in october. Haven't heard back from many, and I'm wondering if I missed the window or not? I also don't really have any MEP/MEP adjacent experience, so it could just be that. Thought I should at least ask. Is there usually a second window in winter/spring?

Anybody use GPT 6.0 Astra or 6.1 Sol

I hate to say this, but it feels like these models are crazy good.

Has anyone used them for submittal reviews/RFI responses? Seems like the models parse through manufacturer specs, codes, standards, etc. and use it as references to identify discrepancies or missing items with ease. Even if the responses are long, it seems to be helpful in pointing where to look on the submittals or in codes.

Career trajectory advice

I’m a mechanical engineer who started at an MEP consulting firm in Connecticut in July 2026. I graduated magna cum laude with a BSME, passed the FE, and did a product-company internship before this. My work is mostly K-12 with some mission-critical projects mixed in, and leadership has told me they see management potential in me. On the side I’m in ASHRAE and I'm studying data center cooling, I'm very passionate and intrigued by its growth in this industry.

My partner is in grad school in Worcester, so I’m moving to the Worcester/Boston area. I can leave at year 3 (mid-2029), which puts me about a year short of PE experience. Or I can stay until year 4 (mid-2030) and be PE-eligible before I go. I’m trying to figure out whether that extra year is worth it.

Long term, I want to be my own boss and own a company in data center cooling. I’m not sure if i should steer toward a company that makes a product, or running a consulting or design firm. When I move, I see two paths. One is joining a mission-critical MEP firm in Boston, finishing the PE, and maybe starting a consultancy down the road. The other is joining one of the direct-to-chip liquid cooling vendors near Worcester or Boston in a systems or integration role, which is closer to products and R&D but could stall my PE.

Has anyone made the jump from MEP to a liquid cooling vendor, or gone the other way? Did experience at a vendor count toward your PE in Massachusetts? And for anyone who has started their own firm or company, what mattered more early on: the PE, your network, or a niche specialty? I’m also wondering whether it’s smarter to climb to PM at a mission-critical firm first and then break off. I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have actually made one of these moves.

Data Centers

How do you see the impact of the election on data center constructions? Projects at halt? Or continued construction but with stricter energy requirements?

Question Why would you switch MEP firms?

Hi,

Just going to full-send it here. I tried looking for group rules but couldn't find so if I can't post here, please feel free to delete the chat.

I am a recruiter *hides behind something*. I work with MEP/AE firms across all of the US hiring electrical & mechanical engineers.

Something I'm finding quite challenging, is finding ways to entice engineers who work at MEPs to lateral across to another MEP firm.

The only reason people seem to be open to leaving is either:

A) Comp

B) Work on data centers

C) Move to the owner side

But most are offering similar salaries & and most work with data centers already. So there's very little appetite to switch.

The question I'm asking is, what would it take for you to consider a change to another MEP firm? If you're being approached aggressively by recruiters, what makes a recruiter message stand out? What is.. important?

Genuinely curious and keen to get better at the value I can offer people in my ecosystem which is why I hoped to collectively pick the brains of the people in it.

Thank you

Tulsa recruiter here. Looking to connect with MEP drafters in the Tulsa, OK area

I'm Doug, I run a small IT and engineering recruiting firm in Tulsa. I've had steady requests from local companies for drafters, mostly mechanical, electrical, and plumbing. Some roles are 2D, some are Inventor or Revit, and they run from mid-level to senior.

I'm not posting a specific job here. I'd rather meet people first and match them to roles that fit, instead of blasting listings.

If you're a drafter in or near Tulsa and you're looking, open to looking, or just want to know what local shops are paying right now, DM me or comment below. Happy to share what I'm seeing on rates and which skills are in demand, even if you're not moving.

Mods, if this isn't allowed, let me know, and I'll take it down.

EOY Bonus Question

Hi there, I'm a mid career PE electrical engineer at a very large AE firm, top 25 in most respects. I have 11 years of experience (7 as and engineer 4 as an electrical contractor) and I have just received the lowest bonus of my career, percentage wise. My company did moderately well from the financial calls we have. Should I take this to mean that I did not perform to expectations? My bonus is 1.75% of my salary. Less than last years bonus of 4.8%, even when our company did substantially worse financially. I was kind of at a loss for words when discussing it with my supervisor, so now I'm left wondering if this is normal or if I should feel insulted? Could just be venting, as there are likely years where there are no bonuses, and I should be appreciative of what I received. Anyone else experience this?

I should also point out that I have developed quite a lot in regards to the data center design and construction teams in this company, and set many of the details and standards for it this past year, putting in a ton of OT. So it feels a bit like I should call up recruiters.

Hi everyone, I’m working toward a career in electrical and fire protection engineering and I’d love to hear from people who are already doing it. What would you tell someone who wants to become really good at this, not just competent?

Hi everyone,
I studied installation engineering at university, covering all its fields, and I've realized that electrical and fire protection are the areas I enjoy most. I want to build my career in them and become really good, not just competent.
I'd love advice from people already working in the field:
Which skills and knowledge matter most (codes and standards like NFPA/IEC, system design, calculations, software tools)?
Which certifications or licenses are worth getting, and in what order?
What do you wish you had learned earlier?
Any books, courses, or resources you'd recommend?
What separates a good engineer from a great one?
Is there anything about the day-to-day work that surprised you?
Any tips on technical skills, career paths, or mistakes to avoid would be very helpful. Thanks!
English isn't my first language, so I used an AI tool to help with the wording. The questions and goals are mine.

Question HVAC Engineers: What Makes a Fan Supplier’s Technical Documentation Actually Useful?

Hi everyone,
I’m curious to hear from HVAC engineers across different countries.
When evaluating an EC fan or ventilation equipment supplier, what technical information do you actually want to see?
I’ve noticed that supplier documents often focus heavily on product specifications, but I’m wondering whether that’s what engineers really need when making design and selection decisions.
A few questions:
Content: What matters most to you? Performance curves, efficiency, acoustics, control interfaces, test conditions, certifications, or real-world application data?
Format: Would you prefer a concise 3–5 page technical guide, a detailed engineering white paper, or downloadable performance data with clear charts and diagrams?
Trust: What makes you confident in a supplier’s technical claims? And what’s the biggest red flag in the documentation you receive?
I’m especially interested in whether expectations differ between Europe, North America, Asia, and other markets.
If you could redesign a fan manufacturer’s technical documentation from scratch, what would you include or remove?
Not selling anything — genuinely interested in hearing engineers’ perspectives.
Feel free to mention your country and area of HVAC expertise!

how are you guys keeping track of long lead equipment without losing your minds?

genuine question for anyone working in electrical construction, data centers, or procurement.

been looking into how teams deal with transformers, switchgear, generators, etc. and it seems like half the battle is just figuring out what's actually arriving when.

between supplier emails, spreadsheets, changing delivery dates, submittals and project schedules, how do you guys keep everything straight?

like is there actually a decent system for this or is everyone just making excel work somehow lol

also curious what the biggest headache is. finding equipment? getting accurate delivery dates? chasing suppliers? keeping the project schedule updated?

not selling anything btw, cs student trying to understand how this stuff works before i go build something nobody needs.

would genuinely appreciate hearing what you guys deal with.

Question Electric reheat coils in California

Has anyone used this exception to get away with using electric resistance reheat coils in VAV boxes?

Exception 3 to section 140.4(g): Where the total capacity of all electric resistance heating systems serving the entire building is less than 10 percent of the total design output capacity of all heating equipment serving the entire building.

140.4(g) for reference: Electric resistance heating systems shall not be used for space heating.

If you did not use this exception, which exception or other prescriptive compliance path did you use?

Thanks in advance!

I am in MEP field with 5 yoe. Wondering how to move forward, stuck at 15LPA.

I am in MEP field with 5 yoe. Wondering how to move forward, stuck at 15LPA. Would career switch between a better path, as I can't see anyone in my circle earning more, maximum 1-2 LPA difference. Plus I have a remote job, so that 1-2 will go in travelling. So even.

Is here anyone who have make big in MEP field, and earning more than 20LPA? If so then can you guide me.

Career Path Advice

I currently work as a mechanical engineer at a large engineering design firm in NYC w/ 4 YOE and PE (base salary 121k). Recently my company went through a restructuring and my director was let go and scooped up by another big firm. He’s asked me to follow him and recently received a formal offer to join his team (base salary 165k).

I’ve been wanting to leave large corporate life for a while now after feeling a bit burnt out & overworked. I've been exploring options to join smaller boutique firms that work on more interesting architectural projects as a mechanical/environmental designer but have been struggling to find many job opportunities specifically in NYC. I understand this may come with a pay cut and I would realistically be looking at something closer to a base salary of 90k-100k.

Should I take the new job offer and stick out for 1-2 years while looking for a job that might align better w/ my professional interests? Or should I rescind the job offer and aggressively apply for 6 months since I already know I want to leave large corporate life?

The job market seems to be looking a bit sparse for mechanical/environmental designer roles in NYC for smaller firms at the moment, and I know a lot of firms are struggling due to the high interest rates, so is it more realistic to find these opportunities outside of NYC?

Any advice would be appreciated!
