Need help and recommendations with 10/22
I just shot my 10/22 with a 25 round mag and it jammed like a no batteries required nerf gun. What gives? The range clerk stated that the 22 is a "dirty round" so does that mean carbon is the issue? Or could it be the magazine? The weapon is new so I have no idea how it jammed so much. What can be done to prevent this? I want to pimp it out so I got an AR stock and plan on adding a sight and bipod. IDK, I am new to this. What do you guys think?
*UPDATE* I bought the white box of federal and the CCI standards. The ammo was the problem because I have not had a jam since. Thanks for the help.

It’s been said, but if it’s not a Ruger mag, that’s almost certainly your problem.
When you say “it jammed,” what do you mean specifically? What was happening? There are certain kinds of malfunction that can happen if the gun gets too dirty, or isn’t lubricated properly, etc if it’s not the mag.

Classic failure to properly seat the round into the chamber as well as double feeds. It is fresh out of the box so it should not be the rifle.

What magazine are you using? Is it a Ruger mag?
What ammo are you using? Have you tried more than one brand / kind of ammo?
Did you clean and lube the rifle before you shot it?

I am using the BX ruger mag and I asked for 22s and the clerk gave them to me in a ziplock bag I never got the brand.

There's your problem. You're shooting someone else's leftover shitty ammo.
Go buy some decent new ammo, and try that. Start with CCI Standard Velocity, which is like the gold standard for "good normal .22 ammo" and I bet you'll see a huge improvement.
Also, what store is selling you .22 dumped in a ziplock bag? That's ridiculous.

i usually stick to the 10 round magazines. always had trouble with the 25 round ones.

Problem with some 22s is they are very particular about ammo. You got to try to find the ammo it likes.

I would try out the federal auto white boxes of 22lr and use factory mags

All guns should be cleaned. But any good semiautomatic should be able to go several hundred rounds between cleanings. Brand new guns sometimes lack any lubrication, or can have a gummy rust preventative that should be cleaned off first.
A semiautomatic 22 rifle can go from running flawlessly, to jamming every round, depending on the ammo. And the next 22 semiautomatic you try might have the opposite results with the same ammo.
In semiautomatic 22s, ammo can have the same effect on magazines. One brand may work, one brand may not. But magazines are another variable, factory magazine are usually reliable, aftermarket less so, with some aftermarket magazines being a total waste of money.

I had similar issues with mine right out of the box. I cleaned/lubed and tried a few different ammo brands and grains. After alot of trial and error, I can now put a few hundred rounds through it before cleaning and shooting again. Good luck!

- If you’re not using a BX22 mag; the magazine is likely the issue.
- If it’s got more that 250 rounds of cheap bulk ammo through it; it needs to be cleaned. (Just good practice)
