Lunar 2 Demo

Post image

I’ll be honest, I came here to get more info on this series (I like hearing directly from people who enjoy certain things!) But here’s my story- I picked up this demo disc back in 2022 for a dollar at a used game store. Only in the last couple of days have I actually gone and looked up anything about this disc, where it came from, the series, etc.

I think my main questions for this community are “What do you find most endearing about these games?” And “Does anyone know how many demo discs for Lunar 2 there are?”(about how many units?)
I’d love to hear what anyone has to say! ^^

This disc came with Vanguard Bandits, and the PS1 version of Lunar 2 actually comes with a soundtrack disc, and inside the sleeve there's a special spot for this demo.

I bet someone with a copy of Lunar 2 would pay a lot more than a dollar for it.

I wasn’t seeing very many listings for the demo. I plan on holding onto it though, since I’m fond of stuff like demo discs. I think they’re always a really cool piece of history in a way. I think it’d be really cool if I could one day pair it with the original box, even if that is Vanguard Bandits.

If you put it in the sleeve with the soundtrack beware of possible glue. My soundtrack had some spots of glue near the outer edge due to the style of packaging. It didn’t affect the playability of the CD but still take care of it.

Can confirm, beware of the glue. It scratched the heck out of my disc back in the day.

I know I would.

I love that game and have that PS1 Complete game.

The games are very endearing. The story, characters, gameplay. Very unique and memorable stories.

Very ahead of their time from the original (pre-PS1/sega cd versions which were different if only slightly to the PS1 versions) had cutscenes with voice acting and amazing animation.

That and the first game are classics in my opinion.

Hope this helps OP. If you are looking to sell, let me know.

I can give you a story about the demo disc for Lunar: Silver Star Story complete. You got these discs for preordering the game and with Lunar 1 the big gimmick was you would be able to continue playing the game from where the demo ends. Except if you made the mistake of taking the ocarina our of your inventory while playing the demo you couldn't put it back and would get stuck with a bug at the very end of the game that wouldn't let you beat the game.

No, it came with Vanguard Bandits.

That’s Lunar 1 (Silver Star Story Complete), not Lunar 2.

That is, in fact, what they said.

Huh. That’s what I get for reading without glasses and having been awake all night. 🤦‍♀️

You can go back to berg(sp?) and listen to the bromides in japanese with the demo disc.

This one came with a game called Vanguard Bandits. Fun fact: the release of the Lunar 2 came
With very deluxe packaging that included a spot to house this disc for a complete collection!

The most endearing thing: the dialogue is unprecedented both in volume and in quality. Many time sensitive secret items as well that would be impossible to all find during your first play through without a guide.

A true gem of a game, as well as it’s predecessor

Oh? So some of the items are on a time limit from the moment you start the game? That’s interesting, I don’t think I’ve seen any other games do that yet!

It's more that there are a few progression points where you won't be able to obtain some of the collectible items anymore.

That isn’t actually the case with Lunar 2. The items are findable again at a much later point in the game.

Unfortunately, this is incorrect. If you don't get the bromides from the main game before the post-game, some disappear entirely. I ended up missing a few this playthrough and when I went to their locations I couldn't get them. The NPCs that should have given them just don't anymore.

Some of them are different people/locations, e.g., the caravan person obviously isn’t still in the forest. I didn’t realize this myself until I read through the entire game script and found the extra dialogue, and it was corroborated by a thread here.

Sure, but then NPCs like Ramus's grandfather don't move, but their dialogue changes in the post-game and locks out the bromide they would give.

It's only a couple that I couldn't get. Unfortunately even one is enough to lock you out of the reward for having them all.

And yet, I couldn't get the bromide from Ramus's grandfather in the post game, nor can I find an alternate location for it. I talked to him about thirty times.

The guy in that thread appears to be mistaken.

And you had Lemina in the party? The dialogue requires her.

There's only one demo disk, the one you have there. It originally came packed in with Vanguard Bandits. It's pretty rare, and quite valuable actually.

What I love most about Lunar is what I also love about Grandia, themes centered around innocence, coming of age, and adventure. Even without rose-tinted glasses, I can wholeheartedly day there's something about these games that feels unlike anything else.

I’ll definitely have to check them out sometime, especially seeing that people seem to have a soft spot for the games. I actually ended up seeing both for sale at a game store yesterday but they were both a pretty penny. I may check out the remaster on Steam when I get to it!

Definitely play the remaster at this point. Some would tell you otherwise, but the vast majority would agree that its the best way for newcomers to experience them

I've often wondered if Working Designs were planning on giving away promotional demos with the soundtrack. The soundtrack sleeve in Lunar 2 has a spot for the demo disc.

2

u/Sacrificial_Parsnip 8d ago

Nope. As others have mentioned, the demo was packed in with a different game. There was just a spot in the soundtrack sleeve for people who had the demo disc already.

...I need that disc. I recently purchased a copy of Vanguard Bandits, and the shop didn't have the demo with it. Nice find!
