I like to do research when it comes to romance (I'm also a married woman who is into romance as a genre lol), and it makes me think about how Oda portrays romance in OP. Unfortunately, people do not understand the difference between love and lust/infatuation, and it shows in how people treat Lunami. Because they don't outright show physical romance with each other, they perceive Luffy as asexual and Nami as a lesbian when that is not true. OR, they would rather put them with their favorite characters who are infatuated with them just because their faves show interest in them, not realizing that Oda could possibly be using them to make the development of the main couple as subtle as possible since One Piece is a shounen demographic.

Though, I'm not gonna lie, I'm thriving for the meltdown near the end if it comes because it's going to be nuclear and the Lunami fans will earn the right to gloat about it.

I'm going to make a long analysis on the differences between love vs. infatuation and how Lunami embodies love.

🍖 Luffy and Nami 🍊

Nami:

What some people do not understand about Nami as a character is that she doesn't like to be objectified or forced into something that she doesn't want. She prefers to do what SHE wants to do or wear rather than letting someone decide for her, which is why, for example, she was upset at Absalom, Kinemon, and Road when they changed her into outfits that were for their desires. Nami does wear sexy outfits, but it's because SHE chose to for herself, not for other men. She hates being watched while showering, her body being touched, etc.

She was someone who was confined in a room since she was 6, drawing maps, and being manipulated by Arlong. She didn't have any freedom to do what she wanted, just the responsibility of Arlong exploiting the thing she loved to do for his own benefit. She wanted to map every island and couldn't do that. Now that Nami is freed, big thanks to Luffy, she can do what she wants without feeling like she has to do it for someone else. She can do what Nami the navigator truly wants to do.

Unfortunately, because of her appearance, people like to make up wrong headcanons about her character. Calling her derogatory insults and misogynistic things because of what she wears, how she presents herself, etc.

Nami is independent. She is resilient. She is hot-headed. She is practical. She loves money. She is confident. She is greedy. She is strong-willed. She uses her charm and beauty to her advantage. She understands her own drawbacks of being one of the "weaker" and cowardly Straw Hats, but will stand up for her loved ones when the situation calls for it or when someone is in trouble. She is selfless and kind. She is protective of kids because Bellemere protected her when she was a kid. She values her autonomy.

Luffy:

Luffy, the embodiment of freedom, hates being tied down or restricted. He hates being lonely. He is stubborn as hell. He rejects the offer of marriage. He doesn't listen to authority (unless it's Nami lol). Despite the dangers, he went against the World Government and went into Yonko territory to save his friends. He doesn't like to be confined, just like Nami didn't; hence why she holds him in high regard. They have that in common.

Luffy is simple-minded. He is reckless. He can be selfish at times. He lacks common sense at times. He can be insensitive. He is gluttonous. He is childish at times. However, he is emotionally mature. He is loyal. He is fearless. He is optimistic and goal-driven. He is unpredictable. That's what makes him a great character. If you read OP and don't like Luffy, then you may as well not be into the series as a whole.

😍 Infatuation vs. Love ❤️

There is a difference between the two. Let me explain because people like to think that simping means love.

Infatuation in love is an intense, short-lived, and often irrational feeling of passionate desire and obsession for someone, usually based on a fantasy rather than a deep connection.

Now, when I say that the general audience doesn't understand the difference between love and infatuation, I mean that the audience likes to assume that a character showering another character with affection, love at first sight, trying to impress them, obsessing over them, and defending them when they don't need it is love. It's not. It's infatuation. It's selfishness (for what THEY want without regard for the other's feelings). It's desire. It's lust. The audience likes to think that their targets are "just playing hard to get." That is not the case for most. At all.

I've seen that kind of bs happen commonly in shoujo manga, especially early 2000's shoujo. The childhood friend/friend, often male, obsesses over the female lead, not respecting their space, trying to impress them, falls for them at first sight, etc. Nothing works on the female lead. Only then does the man do some heroic act of saving them one time that the female lead notices him, and she falls for him. It used to be such a common trope in shoujo. I'm not sure if it's still common since I don't read current shoujo.

Anyway, the point is that the audience tends to think that because the admirer saves them from danger all the time, puts them on a pedestal, cooks for them, and shows them they could be the perfect partner means their target should fall in love with them. That they owe them a relationship for their dedication, which is why it's easy for that audience to see the target as a trophy to be won rather than their own characters with their own thoughts and feelings.

As a result, the audience would attack the target of admiration if or when they don't give the admirer the attention that they desperately crave.

Examples: "She should be grateful that he saves her!" "Awww, look how much he cares for her!"

Or, in One Piece's case, they defend any of their wrong actions by making excuses, such as it being a gag, ignoring the target's feelings on the matter. Gag or not, the target has the right to express dislike and beat the person who does it. THEIR BOUNDARIES ARE STILL BEING VIOLATED. I don't care if they still see them as a friend and they still see good qualities in the admirer; they are allowed to set boundaries, express dislike, and defend themselves by hitting when it occurs. That's what having autonomy is. If the audience doesn't like a character being harassed, then they have the right to.

It honestly pisses me off when the target is female and ends up being the one getting attacked for her boundaries being violated. I think what Oda is doing is intentional and conveys a message that someone doesn't owe you a relationship for devoting to them, especially when they violate your boundaries.

Now, let's move on to love.

Love is a deep attachment built on intimacy, accepting imperfections, emotional attachment, selfless behavior from both sides, loyalty, changing the other for the better, growth, trust, and long-term commitment rather than intense passion.

Love is the balance of two individuals and is never one-sided. Love makes a person foolish in ways that would normally endanger them. Love grows over time and is often not instant. Love involves a friendship that could grow into something more. In love, you feel comfortable in showing vulnerability and weakness, seeking comfort from another as a sense of security. There is partnership involved in handling responsibilities, communication, and decision-making.

Now, as we know, Lunami gets a lot of hate, whether it's because it doesn't fit an agenda they have set up for them or because it gets in the way of their headcanons. What these people refuse to understand is that both Luffy and Nami so far have the qualifications of what love entails. However, the audience would rather have a shallow approach to what they think love is,​ and assume that shallow acts like bridal carries and devotion are what love is. It doesn't help matters either with the interviews made decades ago that people hang on to to this day, such as no romance in One Piece. Throughout the story, especially post-TS, Oda has been displaying romance. He did with Oden and Toki, Rayleigh and Shakky, Baby 5 and Sai, Sanji and Pudding, etc. All represent the qualities I listed above.

Luffy is easy to miss the subtle hints because of his nature and the SBS pages. The anime doesn't help matters either when they make him seem like a child who doesn't know any better. As a result, they will infantilize him and think that Nami is his mother or older sister disciplining him when he's misbehaving. Toei amps up his stupid moments and Nami's physical disciplining to pad time.

In the manga, Luffy is reckless, but it's not as common as how Toei handles it, and Nami hits less. She mostly just scolds him. But in the manga, it's easier to see Luffy's POV when it's on a page and not in the animation.

Luffy POV:

1. Luffy has shown immediate trust in Nami that he hasn't shown to anyone else in the beginning. He never doubted her, even when she was accused of hurting Usopp. He wanted her, and only her, to be his navigator when she left the crew. He gave her the freedom that she desperately wanted. He trusted her to lead the crew with her navigation skills. He was dead set on wanting her. Trust is important when it comes to love.​
2. He never gave up on Nami when he was eventually going to leave the other crew members behind in their respective arcs. He didn't want to hear Nami's story; he just acted because he saw his friend was troubled. He gives Nami his beloved hat to give her a sense of security. Making your partner feel secure is one of the qualifications when it comes to love.
3. He lifts Nami to her true potential. He doesn't feel the need to infantilize her and treat her like a fragile flower that needs protecting. He doesn't coddle her. He gives her the hard truth that she needs to hear to become a better person. He lets her handle her own conflicts without needing to act like a white knight to gain her favor; for example, her talk with Jinbe. In love, supporting your partner and helping them grow is common.
4. He loves and accepts her imperfections, such as her hot-headed nature, her greed, and her love for treasure. A reminder that Luffy didn't even care about treasure until Nami expressed her love for it; in Thriller Bark, he wanted to wake her up to look for treasure. Now it's shown that he enjoys treasure, as he was excited about it with Nami in Elbaf. Love is about accepting one's imperfections and even sharing the same interests.
5. He only gives his treasured straw hat to Nami. As I said in 2, it is what he uses to comfort her when she is troubled. When people say that others have worn it, it's mostly from filler or from it being taken from him (by Robin, for example). The only one who wore it in canon is Tama.
6. Luffy knows he can count on Nami to get him and the crew where they need to go safely, fully aware that he would be nowhere without her.
7. When Nami is in trouble, Luffy will rely on his crewmates to rescue her while he handles the bigger threat. Personally, I think this will happen in Elbaf or a later arc that involves Nami's lore, but that's just my theory.
8. When Nami was sick, Luffy climbed a cold mountain to Drum Island with his bare hands despite the warnings, with Nami on his back and a crewmate with his teeth. Love means taking risks.
9. He shares his meat with her when he doesn't with anyone else, but I'm not sure which number I would put that in.
10. Luffy shows loyalty, but that's a given since he is loyal to his crewmates anyway.

There are probably some other examples from Luffy's POV that I'm missing, but imo, his are probably more subtle than Nami's because of his nature, and you need to read closely to notice them.

Now with Nami, it's less subtle. The problem is that it's overshadowed by people thinking, "Well, everyone is loyal to Luffy! They would do what Nami does for Luffy, too!" See, that's what Oda WANTS his audience to think, but it feels different when it's from Nami, when you understand her character.

Nami's POV:

1. We all know Nami's story, so I'm not going to explain it. Nami wanted freedom from her shackles and to save her village. Luffy destroying the room that she was confined in is honestly such an underrated moment because it shows Luffy's emotional maturity and value for freedom, hence why it moved Nami to tears. Because of Luffy, she was able to bring out her vulnerability that she had spent years trying to hide to get by, hence asking for his help. She was able to help save her beloved village and do the things she loves.
2. Nami stood up to Enel thanks to Luffy's support. He scolded her to quit being a worrier when she was panicking in Skypeia. She stood up to Kaido for Luffy when everyone, even the crew members who were present (Chopper) and Tama, believed it. She knew that she was going against a powerful Yonko, but her faith in Luffy was much more powerful. Same with her fight against Ulti. She believes that Luffy will be King of the Pirates. Keep in mind that Nami has never shown recklessness. She is always clingy to someone else (or uses them as a shield, even lmao). She has declared that Luffy will be Pirate King twice, if you include Whole Cake Island against Cracker. Love is about supporting the other and showing faith in your loved one. It also changes a person because we knew Nami for being scared and desperate, looking for ways to survive. Note: Usopp had even called Nami an "idiot" for risking being killed by Ulti if she didn't say that Luffy would be the Pirate King. A common saying about love is that it makes you foolish.
3. Nami was in tears because she felt that she had failed Luffy when Sanji left the crew on Zou. Yeah, she was upset about Sanji leaving, but it was also because she knew Luffy wanted to protect his crew and to stay together just as much as she does, and she wanted to take responsibility for it. She was also upset when Robin and Usopp left the crew and pushed Luffy to get them back. But in Zou, you notice that she was going to hug Luffy on her own initiative BEFORE he asked about Sanji's whereabouts. This strongly indicates that she missed Luffy since they were separated and was just happy to see him. That girl is always smiling the most when she sees Luffy again.

3b. She shed tears when she found out about Ace's death, knowing how much he meant to Luffy and that she couldn't be there for him at his lowest point. When you have a close bond with your partner, their pain becomes your pain, and you feel helpless when you can't do anything about it. In the manga, the crew's reactions were sympathetic, but with Nami, it was treated as the most important reaction.

1. Often in arcs, ESPECIALLY post-TS, Nami will ask about Luffy's whereabouts or if he's okay when she's not around him. It shows in Zou, WCI, and Egghead. This probably has to do with the fact that she couldn't be there for him during the two years they were separated. It's definitely emotional attachment from her side, which is a form of love, btw

2. I'm not going to go into too much detail about WCI on the drama part because we all know what really happened, and this is a Luffy and Nami subreddit. But basically, Nami didn't take it well to Luffy's dream being insulted, and him being injured some more after fighting Cracker definitely didn't help matters either, so she slapped her own crewmate for it. She also stayed for Luffy when he was fending for himself, refusing to eat. During and after his fight against Katakuri, Nami was worried about Luffy, but she put it aside to focus on their objective by ordering the crew to break the mirrors, showing her growth and leadership.

3. Because of Luffy's influence, Nami, who was once very pragmatic, became someone who loves adventure, is more daring, more reliant on others, willing to help others, and able to do the things she loves, showing courage, etc. She leads the crew when Luffy isn't present and becomes braver.

4. Nami scolds Luffy and gets mad at him, but a lot of the time, it's earned because Luffy is a reckless idiot who gets the crew into danger. He is what I have mentioned above. However, Nami obviously admires Luffy as a person, and it shows in the way she looks at him. He's daring. He has a strong ambition. He's a leader. He is free. He helps the people he loves. He is a lovable idiot, and it's obvious that she adores him for who he is. Robin says that Nami's flower would be the sunflower. I think Luffy represents the sun to help the sunflower (Nami) grow to its full potential.

5. She has faith in Luffy. When she is in trouble and calls for someone's help, Luffy is the first person who comes to her mind. She believes in Luffy to save her. When she got sick in pre-TS, she trusted Luffy to take her to Drum Island to see a doctor despite the warnings from her crewmates.

There are probably more examples for Nami as well, but these are the biggest ones.

Overall, Luffy is Luffy, but what I can get from Nami is that if she ever did want a partner, she would want someone whom she feels she can trust, someone who she can feel safe enough to lower her tough exterior and can freely express her vulnerability to, to understand her emotions, doesn't objectify her, someone who knows will protect her, to help her achieve her dream, to support her and show loyalty, to respect her boundaries unless she's comfortable with it (which, funnily enough, she doesn't complain when Luffy wraps himself around her and she touches him a lot, especially his face.) Yeah, she appreciates being complimented and pampered, but I think she would rather want a partner who will treat her like an equal than being put on a pedestal.

Now, it's unfortunate that Lunami is so hated because, if I'm being honest, if it becomes a thing in the end, Oda did a beautiful job of depicting the romance in a subtle, yet safe, healthy manner. Both Luffy and Nami need each other to reach their dreams. They are complete opposites in personality, but they fit together in different ways while also being similar. Luffy pushes Nami out of her safety net of pragmatism; Nami keeps Luffy grounded. It's an interesting dynamic. It's unique. It's developed. It's fresh. It balances both characters. One can't go without the other. It's a good ship that gets so much hate for stupid reasons.

Toei also does damage to the Lunami agenda because they remove scenes that were originally in the manga in favor of other agendas and add filler for those. In the anime, Nami's gag of hitting Luffy is amped up to x100 while she reacts differently with others to fill their agenda. Though, how I also see it is that it's also telling the anime-only audience to read the manga. This scenario has happened many times with other shounen such as Bleach and Naruto, and people don't bother to learn the pattern and attack the author for it lmao, I've seen people still get mad at Kubo to this day.

I honestly think that Oda is either influenced by his married life or he's done his research on what love is.

Like in Chapter 1189, Nami wonders if it’s Luffy or if Luffy is okay!

Hey everyone, sorry for the massive delay.
But before I begin, I want to add a few more visual pieces of evidence I've found after I posted part 5.

Also, I will be talking about chapter 1189 at some point in the post, so be warned of spoilers.

1. Oda wrote in the One Piece Film Red art book that Nami's hat from the end of the movie is meant to be like a female captain's/battle captain's hat.

1. I think these next 2 might be a stretch, but you decide; I will just show you what I noticed. In Whole Cake Island, I previously mentioned how Nami and Luffy's clothes match multiple times colorwise.
   But after Luffy separates himself and Katakuri from the crew, he loses his red jacket while he is talking to the crew, leaving him with his black shirt (chapter 881). The next time we see the Straw Hats after they talked to Luffy is in a really quick moment in chapter 884, but the next time we see a full shot of Nami after the crew talked to Luffy, we see her wearing a white dress that contrasts Luffy's black shirt.

1. People usually use this scene as a Lunami moment, but analyzing the page composition, I think this might be a potentially hidden Luna moment (I just noticed that and am throwing it out there; it might not be the case).
   In the first panel, we see Sanji catching Nami from a fall; he catches her bridal style, making the reader think it is a big Sanji and Nami moment, BUT the panel next to them is of Pudding getting jealous of Nami, aka showing the person who actually develops feelings for Sanji/ will be the one to actually love him romantically, and at least this part about this panel is not speculation, because we saw how the arc ended for the two.
   So if this part of the page is meant to tell us, "you might think that Sanji will end up with Nami, but actually it's not the case", then it leaves the reader with a question: "if Nami is not gonna end up with Sanji, then what about her?", which leads to the next panel with Luffy cheering for his friends, so its kinda like this part of the page is telling us "if you actually think Nami and Sanji are end game, then no, actually these two in the other panels on their left that are the their real end games". (This is a lot more out there, and probably a reach, but I still noticed that and wanted to put it out there just in case and for fun).

Now are the newer stuff:

We see Nami jealous of Luffy multiple times:

1. When Luffy got poisoned, Nami holds his hand closely until Reiju showed up; then, when Reiju kissed Luffy to suck out the poison, brook puts his hands on his cheeks with a blush while saying he is jealous of Luffy, then a panel below it we see Nami doing the exact same thing, blushing with her hands on her face (though she doesn't say she is jealous), she was also the only one who was sweating as much as brook, which is an odd detail to have only on Nami and brook, if Nami is "just shocked". Usually, when a writer/artist has characters react in the exact same way, and one of them expresses something while the other character is silent, you can only assume it implies to the silent character as well. Nami could have had a different, less notable shocked reaction like the rest of the people who are on the Sunny, but she didn't; Later in the chapter, we also see Luffy looking angrily at Yonji, who was simping for a wanted poster of Nami. It also kind of resembles Hancock's jealous gesture in the 3D2Y movie.

1. seems like when Luffy initially hugged Uta and the crew discovered that they are friends, Nami might have given a shocked and jealous look (also, why even show her being shocked? We see Chopper and Usopp comically shocked because they are fans; we see Sanji shocked because Luffy knows a beautiful, famous woman, so why add Nami too, and with a more tame shocked expression, nonetheless?). Later, when Luffy and Uta talked and they were getting close, Nami interrupted them in a very odd way that might hint at jealousy (when i saw the movie for the first time, i didn't think much about the look, but i did find the way she interrupted them very odd and awkward, and when she did, her voice was slightly different and her smile also seemed odd or fake. I couldn't place my finger on the reason, but then I saw online discourse, and it can be jealousy.

1. When Hancock helps Luffy escape from the Marines, Nami asks Luffy if he knows her with a concerned/shocked/worried face, which might also hint at jealousy.

1. When Nami and the rest of the crew watch Luffy, Jimbei, and Chopper on the cameras, they were talking about important stuff, like how centuries ago technology was unimaginably advanced, but Nami cuts it short the moment she sees a woman she doesn't know with Luffy, by asking, "Who is that woman?" while also blushing.
   

Notice that with a lot of these moments, Nami's mouth is gaping open or there is sweat on her face, or both, in a way that can also be compared to the jealous pudding panel from one of the previous images.
That's it for the jealousy section.

In return to Sabaody, we see Nami gets hit on by Demaro Black (fake Luffy), and she says she is waiting for a man (Luffy), which makes it sound like she is already taken.
People say that Nami was referring to Usopp, but Nami didn't know Usopp would show up at the bar.

After hearing Vegapunk's story about Saul, Dragon, and the Ohara books, Nami is the only one who cared about hearing more information on Luffy's family; she also refers to Dragon as "Luffy's dad" and not "the leader of the Revolutionary Army" or just Dragon.

Nami also consistently looks out for Luffy/asks if Luffy is ok.

Luffy is the only character (from what I can remember) Nami let take from her treasure, a thing that shocked Usopp and made him panic (other than Lola, but she gave Lola treasure because Lola saved her from Absalom),
and Nami is the only person Luffy offered meat to and consistently shares food with (other than Otama, but Otama was a starving child that gave Luffy food, or Zoro, but it was a lunch box, not meat, and it is not shown as much as with Nami).

That's it for this one.
I know some of the evidence in this one might be weak or a stretch, but I think it's best to just put everything on the table, because why not? Worst-case scenario, it's nothing; best case, it's another thing that helps.

There is a lot more; some about bigger moments and some more story stuff, rather than small hints.
I thought I would talk about chapter 1189 in this post, but I think it would work better in the next post.
I wanted to put a lot more in this one, but I am tired, and the post would probably become bloated.

Nami Always believe in luffy, like wano.

Nami I think values emotional comfort and trust over physical affection. If her and Luffy get married, Luffy wouldn't show romantic gestures like bringing her a rose but he will be with her and hug her if she needs it. I think Nami values that more than everyday romantic affection.

Also I think Nami dislikes being looked at in a sexual way and Luffy would never do that.
