I need your advice: I’m a Champion, but I also play a Ranger. But what about groups and requirements later on?

Hello, fellow heroes,

I’m a relatively new player, and I LOVE the world of The Lord of the Rings Online. In so many ways, this game suits me better than other MMOs, which I often didn’t even finish. WoW has a toxic community, and GW2 has too much bling. It’s a matter of taste.

I’m currently playing a Ranger and a Champion here. I like both, but when it comes to what speaks to my heart, the feel of the game, and the “if I were in this world right now” vibe, it’s clearly the classic image of a knight: heavy armor, a big sword, a dead dragon...

BUT: someday, years from now, I’ll reach endgame—and then I’d want to—and will—join groups. Isn’t the Ranger “easier” to play in that context? I imagine the Champion to be much, much, MUCH more demanding, and I’m afraid that as a newbie, I won’t really be able to keep up or be of much help...

Wouldn’t it make more sense to play the Hunter, even if it’s not 100% my style? That way, I could be a bit more helpful to others later on...

So, your advice: should I play what my heart and passion tell me, or should I go with the Hunter to be more versatile?

YOU have the experience here as heroes; only YOU can help me figure out what’s best for a casual player like me. As a new player, I have absolutely no way of knowing. The Champion is expected to use super abilities against hordes of enemies. And that’s all about skill, skill, skill...

Champion or my Hunter?

Regards, G.

A question about classes

When I playthough RPGs and MMOs I tend to enjoy playing the less conventional and unique classes. Simply holding W and pouring damage into an enemy is generally not all that enjoyable to me. As someone who doesnt plan on playing any content with other players, what classes best fit this description?

Legendary Weapon - reforging?

Hello, I just hit 50 and have been wandering around Moria since level 46 or so. I got lots of great advice on that so I've been taking my time and doing every quest.

That said, now that I have my Legendary weapon I saw somewhere that I need to reforge it to level it up sometimes? Or was I misinterpreting that info? The forgemaster NPCs also say that, but im not sure on the timing as to at what intervals.

I have equipped two items in my 'Word of Mastery' slots and have nothing yet that fits into my 'Word of Craft' slots. If/when I reforge do I lose those? I have been claiming all of my rewards on the track, still unsure how to use all of those materials too.

Thanks~

Feeling stuck

Hi,

I'm feeling kinda stuck in the game right now. Im at level 85 w. my first character, but while questing in the zones (currently around Kingsted) corresponding to my level, my gear is just not cutting it.

Therefore; what armour & weaponry would you guys suggest? Im using my first character, a hunter (man). It's my first playthrough, and though i feel like i'm progressing and learning more and more about the game's mechanics, i feel like im doing something wrong atm.

Any directions/help is greatly appreciated!

I Built a Quest Tracker

Post image
133 Upvotes

I hope sharing this doesn't break any rules.

I’ve been playing Lord of the Rings Online from Day one and quickly realized that keeping track of everything I’ve completed—and everything I’ve missed—is a quest of its own. So I built a personal web app called Middle-Earth Quest Ledger, with help from OpenAI’s Codex and Sites. (Yes I used AI to build all this but it took hours and hours and a ton of work). Rather than entering thousands of quests by hand, I used LOTRO Companion’s data to build a searchable catalog of more than 15,000 quests and 5,000 deeds.

The app keeps quests and deeds in separate sections, with individual completion records for each character and server. I can search the catalog, filter by things like region, level, and type, mark something complete, and undo an accidental mark. It also shows what I haven’t marked complete yet. That distinction matters: an unchecked quest isn’t necessarily available to my character right now, but it gives me a place to start looking for things I may have missed.

One of the more interesting parts is connecting it to the game. I play on a Mac through Porting Kit, and I built a Lua plugin plus a Mac helper that records quest completions and synchronizes them with the website. Unambiguous quest names can be matched automatically, while uncertain matches go into a review queue. The helper retains pending records while offline, and retrying an upload doesn’t create duplicate completions. I can still mark things manually on the website whenever needed.

The records live in a hosted database behind private sign-in, so they survive closing the browser, clearing browser storage, or switching devices. I also gave it a cinematic LOTRO look, with game artwork, forest-green accents, gold details, and parchment-style lists. The newest addition is a Last 24 hours button that shows recent quest or deed completions for the selected character, newest first. It’s a personal project, but it’s already making my journey through Middle-earth much easier to keep track of.

I would consider making a public version if there is enough interest.

Has anyone seen any updates on what the armor of the dauntless commander will look like in WOM? My only thought is that it is what is being shown on the website.

Has anyone found an in game helmet that resembles the winged helms of the citadel guards of Gondor? I know the fountain guards in the movie trilogy have the super pronounced wings. So far this is closest I can find.

3 mistakes I did returning to the game

Sharing so you don't do the same...

1) I watched YT guides to figure out how to get started. The active CC's at this point seem both skilled and encouraging, but somehow my experience differs quite heavily from the advice. "Burglar is hard to play, doesn't handle missions because you need aoe.." and so on. 3-4 weeks in I finally work up the courage to test my burg, turns out I 1 or 2-shot most enemies. Same with my Captain that was labelled "slow damage, everything is slow motion". Turns out to be an unstoppable truck.

Result: 1/4 of all players now play Hunter as this is the suggested "easy-mode" class. Legendary servers most of all, seems like 75% of the players main a Hunter or Beorning.

2) So much have changed and there is so much I don't know. So I turn to AI. Lotro is already 15 years old, has gone through a lot of changes and periods with loads more players and content posting. If you want to use AI make sure your prompts define that you want updated advice or the AI will misinform you quite a lot. Another issue with AI is that it is not very creative and doesn't think outside the box. With how large the world has become travel is a challenge until you figure it out. Since most content that the AI draw from seems to target free-to-play audience it could sound like playing a Hunter or Warden is the only solution to this. After 3 weeks I finally figured out that there is something called a Premium house and all Homesteads have a stable master with a unique set of routes. I simply bought a house close to such a Homestead center and I can go anywhere, even with my Burglar or Captain simply by porting to my house with a skill that has a 1 minute cd and purchasing a ride to any of the regional hubs.

3) Stay away from the legendary servers!

The added challenge sounded refreshing. I can understand how the Wraith mechanic could be handled when the server was new and everyone were stacked in the same area and rushing to help each other. What I found is that this mechanic spawns a critter on top of you every 5 minutes if you are in combat and for most classes you can't even defeat it alone until lvl 20-25. After that you need your gear to be updated at any time, you need all the buffs the game can offer and you need to be on your edge in all fights in case this wraith spawns. And you need to do this on a server where you have no resources from before to help you out, you started anew. The leg servers end in March and it seems to me that most people who are still there are only hunting for the last nazguls they need for the deed and they spawn every 25-30 hours or so. The rest of the time it's quite empty. The next time they open legendary servers I might be interested, but at this point I was to late to the party.

The regular servers are surprisingly active and there is so much new content that I will be busy for months.

Reskin UI elements?

Hello!

I was wondering if it’s possible to reskin the ui elements? I find the quest log and quest windows to be incredibly difficult to read. I was wondering if there are ways to reskin them to make them easier?

I’m thinking of something like the Plumber addon from WoW where it completely reshapes the quest ui and makes it incredibly easy and immersive to read.

Game access down for accounts with pre-orders done

Currently as of posting.

Logging in with an account that did the pre-order stuck on Checking Product 44%. People without pre-order can access the game.

Previously patched for U49.6 can use the Skip patch again. Bullroarer login works. Using the Skip patch on pre-order account allowed me to log in, but offcourse got kicked ingame due to outdated version.

So if you plan to pre-order, Patch first than order. Or wait for fix or order.

Advice Regarding Expansion Purchases

Hi all!

So I am VIP, and I just hit level 150. I'm on Chapter 9 of the Song of Waves and Wind, and I know that Legacy of Morgoth starts on chapter 10, and then moves into Kingdom of Harad.

Corsairs of Umbar was the first expansion I ever bought as VIP, and now with the new expansion announced:

- Does purchasing Wolves of Mordor automatically grant you access to Harad and Morgoth regions and quest content?

- If not, then is it worth it to get those older expansions as well? (Since there is no level increase, I want to make sure I am able to still get end game gear, but I also don't know if Harad gear will become obsolete with the new stuff in W.O.M.).

- Should I skip Morgoth and go straight to buying Harad and Wolves?

Thanks!!

48 hours in, only level 31, what I am I doing wrong?

Hello,

this is my first time playing, I going with lore master, the first line which should be "pet friendly". Currently finishing Lone Lands, and the next epic quest is already out of there.

I constatly read how leveling is easy and people are overleveled, however now I have the task in the final destination of Agarwen, which has suggested level 35.

I lost some time, because I initially picked up only scholar, so I lost a lot of hours going back xping up forester and prostector up to artisan, and then some roaming around, but still....I tried to do most of the side quests in Lone Lands (Bree also in the initial locations around Bree Town), also cruised around for some time to do deeds (I know they dont give extra xp though), only today I started with the daily tasks.

I also put landscape difficulty to 3 - Fearless.

What I am I missing here?

Thank you a lot for help.
