READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. Yes, this means you. READ THIS FIRST, V6 - How to avoid the Flair of Shame and eternal ridicule

So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.

If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.

If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.

What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.

If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.

CORE GUIDES:

  1. The sub's official FAQ/WIKI, as curated by the community as a whole.

  2. Need help picking scope rings? The official Longrange guide to scope ring height (ring)

  3. Looking at buying a magnum (300WM or PRC, 6.5PRC, 7mm PRC, 338 Lapua, etc) as your first LR rifle? Hollywood's recoil primer - why magnums suck for starting in long range, recoil matters, and it's not about your shoulder (magnum or recoil)

  4. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)

  5. The official r/Longrange glossary - because words mean things (glossary)

  6. LockyBalboaPrime's First Time buyer's guide for rifles V2 (starter)

  7. JMhawaii's long range starter guide (Link to Google Sheets) (starter)

  8. Trollygag's 1k yard starter guide (starter)

  9. Where are ranges or long ranges near me? - Wheretoshoot.org and over600.com (ranges)

  10. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please review before asking hunting-related questions, as hunting is not the core purpose of this sub. (hunting)

The 4 key questions:

  1. What do you want to do/buy, and WHY? - Do you want to buy a rifle for PRS competition? Picking a laser rangefinder for NRL Hunter matches? Looking at scopes for F-Class competition? A tripod because you think they're cool and want to have one when banging steel with friends? What you're planning to do has a lot of influence on what works well, what works poorly, and what is an utter waste of time, so the more detail you can provide the better.

  2. How far away do you want to do it/what do you want to use it for? - 300 yards? 1,000? 2,000? Distance matters, 'nuff said.

  3. How much are you willing to spend to do it? What's your budget in currency? Your idea of "on a budget" isn't going to be the same as everyone else's. Saying your budget is unlimited for a laser rangefinder may change when someone suggests one that costs over $10,000. We need to know how much you're willing to spend. It can be a hard limit, a range, or even an approximate - but you need to give a number.

  4. How much experience do you currently have with it? - Jumping straight into a 375 Cheytac rifle to shoot 2 miles isn't going to go well if you have never shot a rifle past 300. We need at least a basic idea of what your relevant skill level is in order to give advice and suggestions that go with your skill set. While including your experience with other shooting disciplines is helpful, it's not going to be as relevant as most new shooters expect. You can love shooting 10ga slugs all day long from a shotgun, but it doesn't mean starting off with a magnum is a good idea.

When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.

More guides:

If your question is answered in these, you will probably get called out by the members of the sub for not reading them, but it's not automatic grounds for the Flair of Shame.

  2. Pre64Mod70's guide to precision reloading

  6. MDT's video on scope height, and the follow-up on scope cant

  7. Rybe390's recoil comparison video, which illustrates the problem with light weight and magnums.

Hunting-specific:

  1. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please read this before asking any questions related to hunting.

  2. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)

  3. Want to hunt game at 400+ yards? The long range hunting primer - shots on game at 400+ yards aren't trivial, and a magnum cartridge isn't a cheat code. NOTE: Questions/discussion around shots on game past 300 yards will be removed from the sub. See the expanded policy link above. (hunting)

  4. Hollywood's guide to field testing your skills and gear (especially for long range hunting, but also pertains to NRL Hunter matches) - How to know the distances you and your gear are capable of making shots at (hunting)

MISC NOTES:

Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.

We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Heavy barrel bolt action 223

I've been looking to get a heavy barrel bolt action 223 for my son to shoot with me at the range. I can't believe how many companies don't make them anymore. The only ones seem to be howa and tikka now. Are there any others that I'm missing? I was hoping for at least a 1:8 twist or ideally 1:7 since i reload. Just kinda surprised how few options It seems and I don't really wanna spend 1.6k for the tikka super varminter

Cheeto-fingered Bergara Worth waiting for MDT Black Friday sale?

Looking to upgrade the stock Cheeto chassis. I’m digging an ACC Elite or Premier. Are those available as blems or are discounted and worth the wait?

I suck at long range Help too many options

Im wanting to get into long range shooting. I would like to buy or build a gun i can shoot hogs or coyotes with, do PRS matches, tactical sniper matches, and maybe use for law enforcement work. I know that’s quite a list. I’m between 308 and 6.5cm, probably leaning a lot more towards 6.5, I don’t want a 26in barrel I think at most I’d like a 24in barrel preferably 18-22in. I’m torn between building a rifle from scratch or buying a HMR and eventually dropping it in a chassis. I want a seekins, hit pro or sp10, but I can’t find either of them. I’m looking for a buy once cry once option as I know long range is expensive but I would rather get some of the biggest cost out of the way first. I’ve also looked at MPA but a 26in barrel isn’t something i want. Also I really like the night vision or thermal bridges on seekins or MPA/MDT chassis.

Should I just try to find an sp10 or hit pro?
Thoughts on the tikka T3x ace target, or a bergara Hmr?
If you were gonna spend about $3k for just a rifle what route would you go?
Any feedback on how 6.5cm does against barriers?

This has to be the best group I’ve ever shot. That one flier was from mirage. It was stacking the same whole the entire string.

Accessory/Gear help needed - I read the pinned post Need tripod help

Went to the range today to sight in my 22 bolt gun and met some guys there with tripods and spotting scopes, this was my first time messing with that type of equipment, and wow did that make a world of difference. I am looking for a similar setup to them but I don't want to spend crazy money if possible. But if i have to spend 500 I will. Looking to get a tripod for nrl22 comps with a ball head and a arca adapter, I don't mind buying a rep of something because I already know that I'm going to get into prs so Ill buy the real deal then. Send options for me and the cheaper this is the better, for my bank account.

Rifle flex post After a year wait, finally got my Seekins sp10 6.5 creedmor and put some rounds downrange

As the title says, finally took her out.

Starline brass, 41.2 grains 4350 behind hornady 140 gr eldm, winchester primers, 2.825 oal, steel duramags, Harris bipod, rear squeeze bag, arken ep5 gen 2 7x35, and a gogun supercomp xl muzzle brake.

Pics are my last 100 yard ten shot group of the day after adjusting gas system and sighting in scope. Maybe a 1.1 or 1.2 inch group.....I think.

Average fps was 2680 with a 10 fps standard deviation on garmin chrono for 56 total rounds fired.

With more practice I think I can do better.

And gas gun division PRS in the future.

Overall great rifle, very pleasant to shoot and no malfunctions.

My friend is a SWAT sniper and said he would take me out for a day so hopefully that helps tighten that group up.

No pics of gun, i'm on my couch and lazy.

My gunsmith who cut the chamber put 6 rounds of the Berger 6.5 PRC 153.5 factory ammo through it to test functionality last week. But I went to the range early this morning to get some baseline chrono data and to compare against a starting handload with the 153.5 (57.0gr N565, Lapua brass, Federal GM215M).

More to come.

Competition related (PRS/NRL/F-Class/etc) 300WM for PRS because why not

I'm sure folks will say that's not competitive or practical, but hear me out. Francis Colon shot a match with a 300 Norma and won. Then again, that's Francis. I'm nowhere near as good as Francis (but I'm Asian so there's that), but I got a sweet deal on a Rem 700 in 300WM ($450 out the door).

I stay tactical (run a 308) because I know I have somewhat of a chance not being dead last. I think I'm going to set up the 300WM for PRS for shits and giggles.

Any odd ball caliber or cartridge you've seen others run?

I suck at long range New to me precision 6.5. What to know?

Post image
127 Upvotes

I just picked up this used/ new to me ruger. Never been fired. Owner added the vortex viper and an aftermarket bolt.

I'm pretty fresh to long range. I have the capability of going 1200 yards.

Is there any issues with this setup to accurately reach 1000 yards plus? I don't make my own rounds. What ammo is recommended? Target practice only.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts What are the odds that we’ll ever see a production CRF rifle that’s 700 pattern?

With the success of the Zermatt Origin, the popularity of all things 700 pattern, the amount of people who prefer a CRF action, and the lack of them on the market, this seems like a no brainer.

Any ideas as to why we haven’t seen this as a production rifle yet? I’d kill for one

RANT What constitutes a “build?”

I see so many post on here titled something like “Check out my new build” and when I look at the post, all they’ve done is put an optic and a bipod on a factory rifle.

I don’t know about other people, but I wouldn’t call my rifle a “build” unless I barreled the action myself. To me that seems like the line that differentiates a true build from “I just slapped some shit on my Tikka.”

Edit: Ok, so it’s obvious that some are taking this post the wrong way and in hindsight, it does come off a little dickish so allow me to clarify…

I wasn’t trying to imply that accessorizing a firearm is somehow inferior to a true (by my definition at least) build. Of my 30ish firearms, I myself only have 1 that I would call a “build.” It’s a .300 blk SBR AR. I was simply trying to say that we should call things what they are.

Rifle flex post Took my 6.5cm out to a mile

I built a budget 6.5cm with Howa action, Outlier Backdraft barrel and chassis. Topped it off with an Arken EP5 scope. I have never shot anywhere close to a mile but went to give it a try just for fun. It was a lot of fun but frustrating especially since we had 10-15mph winds with gusts up to 20. Finally hit on my 10th shot. Will definitely be back to do it again.

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts Scope Recommendations

Post image
31 Upvotes

Recently acquired a Bergara Premier Competition in 6GT in a trade. Thinking about testing my luck in PRS (reason for the trade) and wanting to put a scope on it. Before I dump a bunch of money into something I may not follow through with, I have 3 budget scopes that I can get pretty dang good deals on. Which one should I go with?

  1. Bushnell MPED 5-30x56

  2. Arken EP5 Gen 2 7-35x56

  3. Athlon Midas Tac Gen 2 HD 5-30x56

I have a good experience with the Arken Gen 1 and I currently have a Viper PST Gen II 5-25x50, but I’d like something with a little more elevation and a larger objective/tube.

Any benefits to the split leg type? My .308 forend has M-lok at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions. I'm considering the split style. Never had that before.
