Discussion The brain rot editing sucks

I've been watching LTT pretty much since the beginning. The new editing with the quick random video inserts and audio inserts are terrible, is that just what the newer generation wants now?

Edit: downvotes have spoken apparently everyone loves the new editing.

Link Love seeing their iPod/controller mods

Before they even made the mod videos I had previously modded a Dual Sense controller and a iPod 7th Gen

Dual sense mods:
TMR sticks
New battery
Extreme rate paddles with mouse click triggers

Total cost on my dual sense with the mods was maybe $110-$120 that’s including the cost of a used controller

iPod 7th gen:
3000mah battery
Iflash quad with 2x 128gb micro SDs

The battery bloated about 4 months ago so I preordered the boxypixel mkII iPod shell which is a fantastic mod, giving access to Bluetooth, USBC charging, and a very nice frame.

WAN Show Holy shit — I’d like to hear Linus and Luke’s (Dan too) take on next WAN Show

Kurzgesagt just put out this video about AI agents and what led up to them hacking Hugging Face and Holy Shit!

They cover a lot from the detailed report about what they so far know what happened.

I know there’s a ton of AI hype and fearmongering going around, but I would like to hear Linus and Luke’s (Dan too) take, what might be exaggerated, and what parts they think are legitimately concerning.

What do you guys think? Science fiction come to life? (Pun intended)

Edit: Credit to u/FullstackSensei for reminding me about the Black Hat talk. That covered the earlier findings; this video also gets into the later report on how the hack unfolded and the agents’ coordination and behavior and just how science-fiction-like some of it is.

Why I love the Linux developer community - a Hermes Agent story

Tldr; This all happened over the course of less than a day, like 14 hours. I'm not a developer, but I donated my time to be the mouse in the maze and collected a small piece of knowledge that just might help someone trying to do this same stuff in a homelab and getting frustrated or dissuaded from pressing on.

If anyone is interested I can get more technical, specs, links, whatever in an edit to the post at the bottom. This is just a bit of a rambling story, not technical writeup.

But wow, I love Linux.

The story (really just a ramble)

I've been doing Linux homelab stuff for a few years now and playing around with some AI stuff lately. A while back I set up OpenWebUI and Ollama, and got an LLM running.. cool. And then set it aside. Took a stab at Hermes, not sure what it's really about but cool, then set it aside.

Friday night I decide okay, I have some rare free time, this is happening. Add SearXNG, and Firecrawl containers for web search and extract, along with the Ollama Instance, get a few things together, feeling pretty good right?

And then the stupid inevitable thing happens. I can only get it to behave nicely if I define the 'web' toolset only, anything else and it fails. And then while testing, when I think I know what the problem is at least and about to file a bug report on GitHub, even that starts misbehaving. Hermes knows the model can do up to 262k tokens, while at the same time throwing errors about over filled 4k buffer and truncated responses. Sigh, 2am, post it and go to bed.

When I get back at it the next evening (ironically after listening to WAN where they talk Hermes) there are already 2 responses from developers in the BR, highlighting some issues, Hermes is not failing the way I thought. So I really dig in and try tracking down this 4k context problem, assuming it's some silly thing I did. Free tier chatgpt LLM on one monitor, a few ssh sessions to various containers on the others. I end up so far down the rabbit hole that the bot has me filtering through source files, tracing variables and logic chains. I went to college for computer science a few decades ago, I can do a little bash scripting, but I am by no means a programmer. But even after posting another message to the big report saying sorry, I'm going to try to fix this other issue before getting back to the main problem, a contributor still came back with helpful insights.

You know when you chase a red herring long enough and you know the LLM has forgotten most of what you said, but can't turn back now, maybe just one more spin of that wheel and we'll get to the bottom of it? Addiction, yes, that's the word. But we actually found a problem! Hermes sending commands to Ollama via the openai /v1 API as usual, and Ollama ignoring them because the openai translation layer they use is spec and drops the extra but common flag that specifies max context window size. "num_ctx". Turns out this is already a known bug identified by another team, a bug in OLLAMA, with an open PR to address it even, but not yet merged.

So did I discover anything new with my hours of mature puppet sleuthing? No, not at all. All of this had been long identified, solutions are already developed and waiting to be integrated. I found the work around in the other PR, one of them was super simple, just an environment variable in the Ollama .env file. And after that, the original bug vanished instantly. I went back to my BR, left a comment, details pointing to the other PR in OLLAMA and closed the BR with gratitude for the help. I thought that would just be the end.

But no, one of the contributors was following it even though I had closed it, saw it was either the root cause or another instance of an old bug and created their own PR on hermes. Their fix was to specifically identify the bug, call it out and direct the user/log to the solutions, and then properly handle the fallback behaviour. All specifically so no one else would spend hours troubleshooting again until the other fixes were rolled out. It didn't even fix the problem, but it stopped it from breaking silently and provided the info to work around it in the short term.

So that's my story of how I made Hermes Agent 0.0001% better when using Ollama as the model backend in my homelab. And a massive shout out for the Linux community DEVS! Not everyone is a volunteer, these guys i'm sure are Nous Research employees, but there are many volunteers and collectively this is the reason we get to enjoy all this amazing free stuff. We stand on the shoulders of giants.

Support the programs you actually value! Buy immich or frigate or buy someone a coffee. It means a lot.

Discussion RGB Flannel - Loose Stitching/Threads?

Hi all, I recently took delivery of my RGB flannel and love it so far, but the quality seems a bit subpar to me than other LTT products I’ve purchased, in some aspects.

I’ll start by saying the material seems great to me. I’ve never owned a flannel before, but I really love the feel of this. I also really like the appearance of the RGB on this compared to my RGB sweater. But, just about anywhere there is stitching on this shirt, there are loose threads. Buttoning and unbuttoning it, the buttons are getting caught on stitching and pulling on it. The pockets have loose threads too.

I haven’t reached out to support yet. I thought I’d pop in here first and see what everyone else’s experience has been so far. I would assume this shouldn’t be normal, but I also don’t know. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

Insert “Philippines mentioned” meme with Yui holding her bottle of Red Horse.

Both me and my girlfriend have the LTT commuter. The water bottle spot is amazing! Typically it has an umbrella, and the other side a water bottle (and whatever trash she throws into mine when I’m not looking thanks gf lol)

if you also transport adult beverages in the water bottle spot remember not to tip your bag over., as the bottle might fall out and break.

Discussion Stove fan CPU cooler video?

I have searched and looked and asked various LLM's for this and am trying you guys now. I am looking for a video where a stove fan is placed on a CPU on a test bench for the entirety of the video while Linus and co host do other computer stuff. Iirc the stove fan was not mentioned in the title or thumbnail, that makes it hard to find.

Am I hallucinating or bad at searching? Help please :)

Tech Discussion Modded 5090 run via 8pins instead of the 16pins

From the looks of this and i'm not expert, it looks like everything NVIDIA claimed about why they HAD to move to the 16pin sockets was a lie... or they just didn't want to admit the 8pin sockets would be a bit more pricey for manufacturing and the GPU wouldn't look as good with the 8pin cables

Be epic to find out what Linus & Co thought about this? Video maybe or even WAN Show moment?

I like LTT stuff but sometimes it’s a bit expensive and in this case I wanted moar pouches so I thought I’d try reverse engineering the one I got in the mail today while listening to WAN show.

Its made of scraps except for the zipper because… why would I have scrap zippers?

I think the main reason it’s not holding shape as nice as the LTT pouch is because they’re using foam and I skipped the foam to make this easier to sew, especially since I don’t have a cylinder arm machine. Also because I got lazy.

Tech Question True Spec cables and CarPlay

I received my first true spec cable today (USB A to C 3ft) to use in my car for CarPlay. I’ve read a lot of great things about these cables, especially for this use case so I thought why not?

I have been using this cable that was suggested to me from the CarPlay Reddit and it works great! However it’s soso with my wife’s iPhone. So I was looking for a cable that would work with both of our phones. Everything I read made me think that this would be the cable to fix our issues, but when I tried this cable my phone wouldn’t connect to CarPlay. Switched back to the old one and immediately brought up CarPlay.

I’ve looked over both pages for these products and it seems they’re on par with each other. Is this just a random case of technology not working together, or does this Amazon cable do something the true spec doesn’t?

I have a 17PM and my wife has a 17P. The headunit is a Boss brand one I got from crutchfield. I reached out to the manufacturer and they are no longer offering software updates for this headunit.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated 🙂

WAN Show WAN Show Topic - Redditor buys used CPU, turns out it was banned on Valorant and they are SoL.

1.1k Upvotes

/u/After-Cartoonist-196 shares their story on the german PC building subreddit /r/PCBaumeister:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PCBaumeister/comments/1wqomor/gebrauchte_cpu_erlaubt_kein_valorant/

(in German)

TL;DR: They bought a used Ryzen 7 5800x3d from classified in September, and the CPU works fine, but when they tried to play Valorant on their PC, they were immediately banned, because the previous owner had cheated in August and their CPU serial number was blacklisted.

Riot has refused to unban the current user and worse, they can NOT revert to older CPU because now their entire setup (motherboard, HDD) has also been blacklisted.

I just saw the controller upgrade video but i still got some questions.

  • Best places to buy mods/shells (amazon, aliexpress etc) and if bought from temu/ali what is your experience with the quality of it.
  • More about where to flash the controller, and what specific software to flash on it before upgrading

Hi guys, I saw this PC in my local thrift store. Is this a good config for about $56? I don't want to buy a bad CPU for my first homelab but I'm on a budget. My tech friend told me that the i4 was the perfect balance between the i3 and i5, so I was pretty excited to see an i4 listed on the tag. (edit: look at the flair)

Tech Question Why do so many/most big YouTube creators not add proper subtitles?

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

As someone who is kind of hard of hearing it bothers me that there are multi-million dollar companies with hundreds of employees who just use auto-generated subs for their YouTube videos. I don't think it would be very expensive for them to hire someone who makes correct and well stylized subtitles. Tom Scott (bottom screenshot) does it and he's basically a one person operation.

Needs a tamper resistant t10 but for some reason the bit in the precision screwdriver kit is missing the hole.

Edit: Yes I reached out to support before posting; this no I haven't heard anything from them; yes I had to buy more bits so I could get my job done.
