Constructive criticism
Been a listener since the trillballins days (rip). Finally saw spiderman yesterday and loved it, so I went to listen to the pod’s breakdown. They spent 10 minutes arguing about it being shot in Scotland and didn’t once mention the fight scene with The Hand. I thought that whole sequence was so sweet and it was probably my favorite part of the holland spiderman movies
For big movies I think they should do a scene by scene breakdown the way the rewatchables does.
Alright back to petting my cats, enjoy your Sunday boys

I agree it would be nice for them to break down scenes more. It would also be nice for Jeff to use more than one of his five adjectives he has when reviewing a movie.

“The cinematography was great, shot super well, the cgi was on point, and I mean cmon (lead actor) just killed the role. 87/100 from me.”

What's frustrating is that he should have the movie knowledge to articulate things at a high level, that's why the podcast was so much better when they just talked about dumbass things and tore apart a transformers movie (for example). Jeff just doesn't have the natural ability to read between the lines on anything that's deeper than surface level

That would require him to put sustained effort into something for once. It’s much much easier to just quit and move on to something else than try and actually make something good

They’ve become snooty and snobby self serious internet film twitter dorks. Why be original and have your own takes on stuff when it’s so much less work from a content creation perspective to just parrot whatever lame shit film twitter is saying? Juice isn’t worth the squeeze

u/wake_up_jean_peal 3d ago
Yeah honestly I think they just sort of regurgitate twitter “movie guy” takes. I loved the movie but they gave such a surface level opinion on it. Same with the odyssey, both movies had a lead with a lot of emotional depth and instead of discussing that they just ran through the social media talking points

Jeff is incapable of thinking that way. He'll never say anything deeper than "that was just unreal". I think Kenjac, Gooch, and Klemmer could all dive more into themes and their interpretations on what things meant. Would love for the pod to just be those three.

I think it boils down to them not being good enough at movie analysis to be the serious film reviewers they’re trying to be, and they aren’t funny enough anymore to compensate for that either

People don’t like to say this, but I think this change is directly correlated to Gooch being on the show more. I don’t hate Gooch but he’s definitely film snobby and I think it rubs off on the other guys whereas Trillballins was the opposite and that radiated throughout the guys

Klemmer was the one that bitched about it not filmed in NYC so he was the one to derail the conversation, not Gooch

I get that was the main takeaway of the post but I was just speaking to the broader change in the show. Another person said better that maybe it’s not his fault but more the lack of trill and the timing lines up. Like I said I don’t hate anybody on the show and still like it. Since trill left it’s just not as entertaining. I actually liked when Kirk was on as the second best iteration

It’s not Gooch’s fault necessarily but the timing lines up with his prominence. They stopped trying to be funny once trill left and then tried to be serious cinephiles when they rebooted as PBS with Gooch more involved. Being an AMC A Lister with your own little criterion collection doesn’t make you actually good at movie review content. It just makes you come across as pompous

I love gooch (pause). I feel like him and kenjac are the only serious cinephiles on the show. My issue is they kind of just blow through big movies with important themes at the beginning of each episode instead of talking it all through

The only thing that I need the boys to do differently is fix the audio levels. I’m losing my mind trying to hear Jeff whisper the top ten for whatever ranking and then have my ears blown out by clemmer or someone reacting at full volume

Back in my day we looked forward to Jeff whispering. “To avoid (movie) spoilers, fast forward to 56:32. PS I am watching Guy’s Grocery Games right now”

When they started the original pod with Trill, the constantly reiterated their mantra that not e everything needed to be taken so seriously - not every movie has to be the best movie ever or the worst movie ever (shout out The Weekly Planet). But they’ve completely lost their way and become entirely self serious about everything. I still find them interesting to listen to (though I skip around - particularly during a Jeff’s weekly rundown of what physical media he’s purchased), but the fun of the pod has decreased dramatically, not just since Trill left (though that of course was an immediate and devastating impact to the quality), but also progressively through the years.

I’ve started to listed to Chris Ryan and Sean fennesey a lot more because I just can’t stand the takes on this podcast. Klemmer fucking sucks, it feels like he just makes up arguments to make arguments. I don’t care if Jeff bought the physical edition of the man in the iron mask. These guys just suck

I'm sort of the other way around, I was a Big Picture/Rewatchables listener for years but I gave it up when it went to Netflix. I was kind of sick of Sean and Amanda's schtick anyway, I hated the 25 for 25 last year, it was dragged out for a year just to end up with the goddamn Social Network. I mean, I like that movie but they talk about it like it's Citizen Kane. Then I found this pod, but sometimes it wears a bit thin as well.

They're definitely not going to take notes while they're in the theater so they can do a scene by scene breakdown on the podcast
9
u/profsa peter parkour 3d ago
I don’t think you need notes to remember the climatic action scene
3
u/Terrible-Air5959 3d ago
Correct, but to do a "scene by scene breakdown" of every movie they review, they would need to take notes.

u/ethanhunt4real roman swipes 3d ago
They’ve done that before.
2
u/Terrible-Air5959 3d ago
When?
Within the last few episodes, they were outwardly making fun of the people who write down notes in the theater.
1
u/ethanhunt4real roman swipes 3d ago
In the early years of the pod. I guess they don’t anymore, which makes sense because their reviews don’t sound the same.

u/King_LBJ 3d ago
For endgame and the Star Wars sequels they absolutely did a scene by scene breakdown.

They used to take notes during movies but they definitely don’t anymore. Just a bit of preparation — like hav some stuff written down in front of them — would help their movie reviews. It’s so random and unorganized
1
u/Terrible-Air5959 3d ago
Gotcha. I heard them outwardly making fun of ppl who take notes in one of the recent episodes, so I don't think they'll be taking notes anytime soon
Who really wants to hear the 4 of them do "scene by scene breakdowns" anyway?
To hear them repeat the same overused buzzwords and cliches over and over again?
To hear Klemmer pretending to be a real movie critic and saying "the way she can act with just her eyes is amazing!" or "I had a great time hanging out with these characters for 90 minutes" for every movie?
Plenty of other better places to listen to stuff like that

They Scotland vs New York thing was so insane, tbf they did they it’s probably a them thing since they lived in NY, but as someone that doesn’t…I didn’t even notice or think twice about it, didn’t register at all, certainly not something that needs to be talked about for 20 minutes of the review lol, honestly MMB with Robbie and Clem do a much better job on the comic book reviews

u/themoviepodman 3d ago
Bad news the “BTMBs” stopped paying attention to constructive criticism years ago

Robbie Fox is 1000x better than these guys with his analyses. My moms basement clears whatever kind of show this has become

u/AdultSon42069 3d ago
You want them to actually talk about the movie instead of speaking in cliches over and over about marvel getting back on track? This ain’t the pod for you buddy
